sounds like Kashi...

That is exactly what I was trying to duplicate. It's cheaper to make your own. Several of the grains are different though. No triticale (Try to refrain from making any references to Tribbles, please.) wheat, or rye, and I added the amaranth, quinoa, and wild rice. We grow winter wheat, so I don't remember why I didn't include it. There was probably a good reason at the time.

so glad to have you back Dina safe and sound

TY. Glad to be home. The drive back was LONG!! It seemed so much longer than the way UP. I split it up coming back.
I even planted a letterbox in PA.
I stopped to FIND a letterbox twice along the way home... I did the SEARCH for everything 1 mile from the interstate....... but one I couldn't even find the PARK.... and another one.... appeared to be on private property.... and I didn't dare go for it. (chicken).

My power bill was overdue.... I had the check.... and was to drop it off in their night box over last weekend. I ended up taking it up to NY with me.....
I realized that I still had it and planned to stop on the way in YESTERDAY and pay it.
Well....... cut off date was yesterday morning... and sure enough...... it got shut off !
We had to have it turned back on.... with a reconnect fee and all that.
I called them to explain the situation..... the drive to NY.... Mama passing away..... etc....
but they wouldn't BUDGE. I really thought they could have cut me some slack, but they gave me the "If we waive it for you, we have to waive it for everyone" speech. GRRRRRRR
So.... I came home to THAT !!!

But... Charlie and I went out to dinner and spent a nice evening together. I slept good last night. Today I have to sort through some of Mama's stuff and pictures and all that. YIKES

I really have been OK. I have been painfully aware of how bad off Mama was..... for the last year or so especially. This terrible alzheimers disease had attacked her relentlessly.... and she was reduced to "existing" instead of living. The caregivers at the nursing home said they checked on her and she was snoozing.... checked a few minutes later and she was gone. She didn't have a bad spell or anything...... she just was called home in her sleep. We should all be lucky enough to "GO" like that !
I believe in Heaven.... as did Mama..... and I know that she's there now.... and her mind is sharp and clear!! I'm sad that she "went", but can't be selfish enough to wish her back... not the way she was. I loved her so very much. I need to believe she's happy and healthy again .... singing with the Angels. (Mama couldn't sing...... but she can NOW!!Teehee)

Thank you again for your thoughts, prayers and virtual hugs. It has all helped far more than you know.
Charlie was good to keep everyone informed and he has been praying for me too.....
mostly that I'd come home soon....... LOL He missed me... I'm not sure, but I think he might like me just a little tad bit.
What do you think ???

HUGS TO EVERYONE
Dina B.

Shiloh--there is really no set recipe...you kind of just get the "feel" of it. The good thing is that you really cant do anything wrong. Your pile needs green, brown and a little water and air. THat is all. THe problem I would see with using a barrel is that the air wont get to the bottom and you might get a slimy mess down there at the bottom. I dont think worms will be enough and the heat inside a barrel that is actively composting may kill them off. I know that when my pile is hot it is up over 100 degrees in the center!
I will look through some of my master gardener stuff and see if there is an answer in there. I am assuming that you cant have a pile that is open in a corner of the yard? Terrio

Disturbing, offensive HH: what would you do?

A while back I found a HH with a very disturbing stamp image and--once you'd seen the image--the name was quite unpleasant too. At the box location I'd just put it in my backpack after checking to see the host box stamp was in the logbook, and so only discovered the nature of the HH when I'd returned home.

It had been around for about a year and the couple of finders who'd logged in and moved it along registered their apprehension both about stamping the image into their personal logs and passing the HH to a new box. I found that I felt the same way, and debated for a long time about what to do with the HH. Eventually I decided it had come quite close to, but had not quite crossed over my personal line. It was gruesome and disturbing, but it was not pornographic or horribly violent.

In the end, I ended up putting this HH into another host box. I did not, however, stamp its image into my personal log, and I did not record the find on AQ. I noticed only one of the previous finders had logged it.

Which brings up an interesting question for discussion. With a traditional box, one often can choose to go for a disturbing image or not. In my experience, boxes with adult themes usually state as much in the clues. (YMMV). But a HH is a surprise element, and to come across a disturbing HH in an otherwise innocuous box is most unpleasant. I'd expect it is a more difficult situation for the many boxers who have young children tagging along.

What would be a good boxing practice in the case of a truly offensive HH? Ignore the thing and leave it in place? Contact the HH owner to express your feelings and/or try to return it? Subtly move it to a box with few finds? Shrug it off since you're not the boxing police, and just move it along normally? Discreetly throw it out, as you might do with propaganda tracts a finder had left in the box?

I'm guessing we'll have a range of opinions here.

From what I've read, you could use a 30 gallon can, but would need to put some holes in it for aeration. Obviously, they'd have to be small to keep your worms from escaping.

The formula is 2-3 parts "browns" for carbon, to 1 part "greens" for nitrogen. Browns can include: dry leaves or weeds, straw, chopped cornstalks, aged sawdust, nutshells, small amounts of paper. Greens can include: grass clippings, weeds, kitchen scraps (no meat, fat or cheese), coffee grounds, tea bags, hair, manure (not cat or dog), seaweed.

Good luck!

It wouldn't be very nice to throw out someone else's stamp, as they did put in the work, however disturbing to us it is.... if it were me, I'd confront the owner, and also express other boxers' distaste. Yes I imagine you will get a thousand different answers here!

As hikers do have the possibility of moving hither and yawn, I would hope that if someone desired to make a 'questionable' image to share - they would make it into a traditional box and label it as such. I think I would contact the owner and mail it home to them as I would not want a hiker like that in my neighborhood.

And for the record, I do have images like this - but in alternate forms (Adult boxes, Adult postals and Adult LTCs) where the exposure can be controlled and limited to those that wish to recieve this form of art. With hikers - you loose all control and run the risk of offending members of this community.

If you decide to go retrive it and send it home to them, you might suggest that if they really want to plant the image - they do so as a traditional and list it as an Adult Box, thus limiting the unwanted exposure many try to avoid for whatever reason.

What a hard decision. I also pick up hitch hikers like you do, toss it in my bag and think about it later. I guess that's the risk of picking up hitch hikers, in letterboxing or the real world.

I know I will not be to popular with the thought of what would I have done if it were me, but my final thought would have been, how nice of a carve is it. I know everyone loves their work but if it were a very quickly done stamp that was easy to tell there was not a lot of time put into it then I may have just tossed it. I have hear of others tossing hitchhikers and cooties so I know it happens. I'm not the "worthy letterbox police" but if it were a stamp/logbook that looked like some time went into it I would have probably done what you did and just anonymously dropped it off somewhere.

That's a tough one. I often box with children, but am very careful to open the boxes myself and preview the contents before they see them. Even if the planter's contents are respectable, you have no way of knowing what others have added.

As an adult, I might not appreciate finding something like that, but I am an adult. I'm not going to have a conniption or let it scar me for life. I would probably remove it, not stamp it in my log and try to find an "adult only" box to replant it in or mail it to a planter who has such a box and won't mind. Then send a polite note to the owner letting them know what you have done. Moving such a HH to boxes where it will be more appreciated will probably help it to last longer and I would hope they would respect your efforts. The next outraged/incensed parent who stumbles upon it might not be so considerate.

I suppose another option would be to add a "graphic" warning to the outside and deposit it in the next hostel you visit. ;) (yes, stirring the pot just a little)

Well since I just drove from Northeastern PA to here in about 13 hours yesterday, The last thing I'm ready for is to get back in my car and drive some more. I have a very messy house to clean. Buttercup and Isabeau brought dinner for my family while I was away but they didn't talk the DH into cleaning up. A week of 2 kids and 1 DH with no mommy to pick up after them equals one really big mess.
I might drive down on Saturday but I really just want to be home for a little bit. I hope you guys have a great time.

I would not pass on a hitchhiker that I found offensive- no matter what. Just like I would not pass on an offensive joke no matter what. Someone can tell you a racially, or otherwise, inappropriate joke and at that point your choice is to laugh (think of laughing in my metaphor as stamping it in.) or not. But you do not ever have to pass it on.

I would contact the owner and let them know I was offended by it and ask them if they would prefer me to mail it to them- suggesting that they retire it or atleast plant it well-labeled- or if they would rather me throw it away. I would make it clear that passing it on- isn't going to happen.

Here's an only box from a ring long ago... way back in 2006. I hunted up the box to have another look at the logbook style because I wanted to re-create it for a current ring.
After looking it over, I said to myself..."Dang self! This is an AWESOME logbook!" lol

So anyway... if you want to see a pretty cool logbook, and an ok stamp... sign thee up!
