International postal letterbox

Hi all,
I am intending to design, carve and send a postal letterbox from the UK to the USA and any other country where letterboxers show an interest.
If you would be interested in joining the mailing list then please let me know (send no details yet) and I will contact everyone closer to the release date.
I would like to try and get this PLB to circumnavigate the globe! Wouldn’t that be so cool??
I look forward to hearing from you.

So sorry to hear that! I hated losing my first box as well, but I learned from it and planted another one. Hopefully, all the ones we have planted so far will stay put!

Good luck on your next box!

While that certainly would be the ideal, if you plant more then your lost percentage will go down. Having letterboxes go missing, unfortunately, is part of the game. After the Time magazine article we lost 13 in the next ten days. We replaced some and retired others.

"Hey! Cut the guys over there some slack. There are bugs over here that Ryan has to iron out, too, when he does updates. Choi just fixed the update status function and it's working just fine. I really don't want to see some kinda competition starting between AQ and LbNA (which is the Mother Ship, after all.) The two work beautifully together.

Funhog"I hear what you are saying Funhog and I agree...
However, I don't believe it is a competition at all! LbNA IS THE MOTHER SHIP and that's what bothers me. I would like to see it made MORE user friendly. As it is - it's a pain in the hiney!
For example I should not have to go back to the home page to get to GA letterboxes page. I can get around all this but there are those who can't (don't know how).
I appreciate the work Wes does and I love the home page of the site. However I disagree that LBNA & AQ work well together. Although I use them both - quite frankly I feel that the 2 combined makes for an unorganized mess!
I don't see anything wrong with discussions on how it does not work for some... this allows website designers the ability to make necesssary changes if they feel the need to do so!
NO one is bashing Wes' ability or his hard work - I don't have the time to do what he does for us!

Quote Red,
Could you possibly go in and add our two GA / SE events? That way, those of us that attended can add them in to our AQ counts.

It took me a while to find them myself, since it doesn't appear in the list of events anywhere. They were added very soon after Ryan had the event planner go live.

You have a point, Funhog

I don't want an "us vs. them" either. I go to LbNA for their cool map. And AQ for the very excellent message boards

I guess I've watched the LbNA site get better and better over the years. Talk about a pain in the posterior... what about the site before you could enter your own boxes and had to wait for one of the incredibly generous webmasters to enter them for you? Sometimes we had to wait for weeks for them to appear on the map. Then, if you wanted to edit them... wait again! What about when there was no way to search for boxes at all? You could search the Talk List archives if you wanted.

This latest update apparently has all kinds of techno stuff involved that I do not understand at all, geek stuff we never see. The addition of the found function is something that has met with great debate over the years. One of the things that I think is wonderful is the ability to turn it off at the new LbNA site for those who don't care to have it on their clues. I am fine with having those dates listed on my clues but anyone who objects to a found listing is out of luck at Atlas Quest.

I think Ryan has created a terrific website for us with all kinds of cool bells and whistles. However, he has the luxury of not having a full time job and can respond to our every whim at almost a moment's notice... if he isn't off galavanting around Central America, that is. Yesterday, when the update function wasn't working, an email to John/Choi got equally swift service.

Incidentally, the front page of the LbNA site is the work of Mitch Klink/Der Mad Stamper. I also think that Wes, with his upcoming nuptials and tumultuous family life, is less involved in the current update. Other webmasters are carrying the baton. I know it was meant as a joke to imply that they needed Ryan's help at LbNA but it seemed to me a bit hurtful to those who have done sooooo much work over there.

Maybe I'm just humor impaired??? Funhog

I'm going to NY on 4/19 to meet with Charlotte Sheedy Literary Agency. Another step closer to getting my book published!
I can't say that I'm looking forward to NY. I'm a country girl. I did live a year in Chicago (that's all I could take). I remember my first trip there. I had never been on a train or even seen a building over 4 stories. I remember asking people for directions and people snapping at me to get on the "L". When I asked what this was I was told "the Loop". This still meant absolutely nothing to me. Mostly people just glared and walked away. By the end of the year I felt like my personality was getting meaner everyday. I felt as though no one paid attention until you were yelling. When I moved down South people I didn't know said, "Hi, how you doing?" I thought, "Who are these people and what to they want!" Apparently, the idea of being friendly to strangers had become foreign to me!
I anticipate the same big city nastiness in NY, and the feeling of being lost. Hopefully, I'll be wrong. I just keep reminding myself that it is worth it. I'll also take some letterbox clues with me.

Hey Funhog,

I loved telling the story of days gone by around the campfire at the TX gathering. I do agree things have gotten 1000 times better since the 'good' old days and didn't want to put any of the LbNA webmasters down. I can't even manage my simple little web page with an update once a month so I can't imagine keeping up with a site like LbNA or AQ. I will always stand by the original clue site even with it's little imperfections. So to all the past present and future LbNA WM thanks and keep up the good work.

Good question Weyrwoman,

I've change my log book style three times before settling down with the system I use now. I take 4x6 index cards, with no lines, punch holes in them to fit in my dayplanner. I carved a large stamp with lines on it so I can put information about the box, exchange, or event. After I get home I remove the card from my planner my add to a photo album.

Hook up with Miss Moon. She is a NYC boxer and a very nice lady. I think you can find her on the Main List and LBMA list. She may hang here as well.

We also use a single book for recording all types of stamps chronologically. Everything is mixed together in the order we found, placed, exchanged, etc. We also log them all in a spreadsheet, which makes it easier to figure out when (and therefore in what book) we logged the stamp.

I'm still a newbie, I have one log book for everything. It has 100 pages. And since I don't get out much, I think I'll be able to use it for awhile.
I like to keep journals, and I write about all of my letterboxing experiences in it.

I do have one small notebook I keep seperately. It's my "portfolio". I keep a copy of every stamp that I have carved

I use the same log book for everything except plants. I discovered the hard way that some people enjoy looking through other people's log books. I was writing my clue in next to the stamp as I planted it and gave away a few of my mystery boxes. Now I have a seperate box for plants, but use the same log book for finds, exchanges, postal boxes, and travelers.

Sigh...gotta edit my own log book

There are about six of us getting together on Monday. I decided to post it as a 'mini meet' at the last minute.

The problem is, one person has already left, and I don't think she has access to a computer. So she doesn't know about the official posting.

I'd like for her to be able to claim it on her "E" count. Will she be able to do this after the fact?
Or will I have to ask Ryan again to make a little magic after he comes back. please
(and I'm sure he will have a pile of work when he does get back too)

Yes, the events stay in the database. Ryan has made it so that past events can be entered so that people can build up their E counts. For example, we were able to count the Treasure Haunt and the first SE Gathering b/c Red put them. It didn't matter that the events were over, just that they were there to be countable.

Hope this helps,
Mark
