How about Ecuador!!!
I'm going there at the end of the month on vacation, and would be glad to bring it there if it's reasonably small. I was gonna plant on of mine, but it would be even better if it was J-Dog's. However you may never get a visitor to this box, or may never find out if you did. Let me know what you think. I could put it right on the equator, or near Cotopoxi Volcano, or possibly on the Galapagos.

We were hoping for several responses so that Jdog could pick out the place she thought was the most "cool". Ultimately she will decide when she sees her options.

I would be happy to place and protect (to the best of my grandmotherly ability) your box up here along coastal Maine. The few boxes I have placed are pretty near me so I can try and check on them monthly.

Good luck with your decision and be sure and let us all know the lucky state or country that you choose.

Yes, I have run into this and no, you should not stamp HH stamps into other HH logs... only the LBs that the HHs are found in (or being placed in). I swap out and make sure that both HHs are stamped appropriately into the LB logbook.

HHs can get confusing - especially if you are dealing with two at the same time!

For anyone heading to the beach down Hwy 74:

The Tiny Towns: Stallings stamp has been replaced and the clues updated. The original logbook that documented when geocachers took the stamp is still in there. The new stamp has info. that it is NOT a tradeable item and the box is marked in multiple places that it is NOT a geocache. I was also not able to locate any geocaches in that park (the previous one appears to be retired). I hope this works this time!

Yes, there are still some Disney boxes in existence. I do not believe there any left in any of the parks, but others that live down there could probably verify--you might want to check with Sits N Knits (she works in Downtown Disney and is always happy for an exchange, BTW) and kilroy. I'm pretty sure that the Wilderness Lodge box and the Downtown Disney Bluebird are still there. Plus, there are several other Orlando-area boxes.

Have fun!

Hi EllBee.

We, too, unknowingly planted a letterbox near an existing geocache--only 2 feet away! Fortunately, the first boxers to find it also found the cache and let us know. We immediately wrote to the cacher and informed him (since I don't live in the area where we planted it) and offered to have someone pull the box if they minded sharing the rock cluster. They never responded. However, I also had a friendly boxer go to our letterbox and write in big letters ALL OVER the box that this was not a geocache, it had no trade items, and to not remove anything from the box.

The letterbox and geocache have been living happily nearby for over a year now. I've had several cachers sign in which is fine. As long as you label well, you should be okay. I'm even able to check on my letterbox by peeking at the cache's website since many people state that they found the letterbox first. So, that way I know that it was still there!

Of course, if you are nearby, you could always find another spot to hide your box and be safe from having your stamp removed.

How do you pitch the idea? and how do boxers find them? Do they have to ask a certain question?

I've found success a few times in this endeavor. I ask to speak to the owner/manager and explain that I have a fun, silly hobby that is like a treasure hunt. I explain the concept of letterboxing and that I like to bring people to interesting places and that I think their place is great because (fill in the blank). I find that flattery does get you everywhere. I tell them that I would hide the letterbox wherever they deem suitable and that I'll let them review/edit the clues before I post them. I also ask them if they have any specific design they'd like to see on the stamp. The more you involve them in the process, the better the relationship. Some places do not want you using a copyrighted logo, others are perfectly happy for you to do so.

I think the ones where you don't have to ask permission are the most fun. However, sometimes the owner/manager feels that they need to be "gatekeepers" for safety-interest or because they want to and that's always fine too. I point out that letterboxing will bring a few people to their establishment, although I can't predict how many--maybe 1 a month or so, but it just depends on how many boxers are in your area.

Hope that helps! Also, I will say that of the indoor boxes where you do not need to "ask" for it, I've seen the logbook and stamp hidden in hollowed-out books, behind displays, and stuck magnetically somewhere hidden from view.

>>>>>Argh! We now have first-hand experience of being 'cached'. We must have inadvertently placed our 'Conquest' box on the Outer Banks in a (postage stamp-sized) park where a geocache exists. Only two of the finders were boxers - or at least we assume they were boxers, as they actually stamped in. All other finders were cachers, and our stamp was gone!!!!

We are very upset about this. We've pulled the box, but does anyone have any advice about what to do now? Should we try to find the cache listing on the web and see if we can get our stamp back? Anyone have any luck doing that?

I wonder if there is any place on a geocache site where we can put a blurb about letterboxing and that we don't take and leave things except ink on stamps. Maybe cachers don't KNOW not to take something. I actually find this hard to believe, but stupidity is more acceptable than plain meanness.

The sun would be the most directly overhead at the equator on the vernal and autumnal equinox. Therefore the fact that it is July really does'nt make it any hotter etc. They really don't have seasons persay. Actually if I stand on the equator, I could have one leg in summer and one in winter.

p.s.
It sounds like J-Dog needs to carve more boxes for other states.

Quote 1) On AQ, use the F-count lockout.
2) On LBNA, direct clues to AQ and see #1

Please don't use #1 and #2 together. It really annoys people when you tell them there's a clue, and they can't get it because they aren't F-whatever and they'll cause all sorts of problems.

If you want to make the clues less accessible for to people who might vandalize them, you might consider not listing the box on LbNA at all since that's probably the first website they check for clues anyhow. But please, don't restrict clues then list links to them on LbNA. It just causes me grief.

Thanks! =)

TRUE. I knew that *smacks self on head*...but when replying to the original message I (obviously) wasn't thinking. I don't list my new boxes at LbNA anyway I was just thinking of how some of the suggestions were much more do-able for me than others. I really don't foresee a day when I will want to leave AQ and make all boxes WOM. *shudders at the thought*

If you note my previous post on my "Tiny Towns: Stallings" box I just had this happen! I did get a lot of good advice from the geocachers/letterboxers on this site:

I checked the caches in the area by running the zip code and then zooming in on the map.

I contacted the planter of the only cache in the area (which was retired!!). I discovered that there may be mysteries or mult-step (that's not the right term but hopefully you get the idea) catches that start elsewhere and bring you to that area. These would be impossible for me to track but I was hoping the original planter may know of another box (he didn't).

I checked my logbook and tried to locate that geocacher (couldn't find them).

Finally, I pulled the box, recarved the stamp, labeled the stamp with my e-mail address and the letterbox it belonged to (in case it still gets traded and ends up in another box). AND labeled "NOT a geocache" all over the box.

I hate learning the hard way.... I hope it works!

I agree: using #1 and #2 together would be an aggravation to new boxers, but it could also be a deterrent to vandals, however temporary.

So how about this: a letterbox posted on LbNA that links to AQ, which links back to LbNA, then to an external site or two, then back to AQ... and on and on and on. Who but a die-hard letterboxer would endure clicks, clicks and more clicks?

One suggestion I really liked was not putting letterboxing.org or atlasquest.com in planted boxes. It makes perfect sense... put up a barrier, no matter how translucent, between the accidental finder of a who has develops the intention of ridding the earth (or at least his or her town) of the Rubbermaid invasion. An independent site or page that describes letterboxing and offers an email address to which you can send a message to get more info.

But that's all a bunch of hooey if you just go to Google and enter "letterboxing".

Word-of-email will work best, especially from inside AQ. I'll always list my boxes, but someday you may have to email me for the clue. A little background check on your profile and we'll see.

(Oooh, I can hear the grinding teeth already. Yes, I know some people start their AQ account just to get clues and then don't log finds or plants. But they're usually 'boxers who have been at this for a while. Somebody who's nefarious in intention might sign up then log 10 Finds in one day to circumvent this. Just looking at the boxes in the logbook will tell you if the person's for real.)

In the end, there is probably no one "best" solution that will work for everyone. And that's part of what makes this enjoyable. Everybody's got their own way of doing things, and somehow it all jives. Dig?
