Does anyone have XM? If so
-What service do you use?
-Do you think it's worth it?
-What's your favorite station?
I'm thinking of getting XM soon as I can't stand ATL radio.

If you're looking into satellite radio, you might want to check out Sirius Radio as well. They're largely the same, though I think Sirius has signed up Howard Sterns and some sport stuff that XM radio doesn't have. I don't know all the details--I've never listened to either of them and could care less what they have available, but there are some minor differences and if you're really into something that one has that the other doesn't, it might be worth while.

I think the people that buy the stock of either company are off their rockers, though. Sheeze! Those are some awful expensive stocks.... *shaking head* And for companies that have never made one cent in profit.

Fascinating technology, though. =)

I have XM. Husband has Sirius. They're very similar, but I think I like Sirius's playlist just a bit better. Then again, they signed Howard Stern, and I loathe him! I mostly listen to the 70's station, because I'm old.

Also the 60's channel (because I'm REALLY old <g>), the Folk channel, the Broadaway channel, and the comedy channel.

I had been using the Crayola markers and felt they were ok but seemed to leave a lot of "skippers". Then some friends recommended Marvy Le Plume markers and I cannot believe the difference. They are sold at our AC Moore and Michaels and I am now the proud owner of several different sets of these, purchased with the 40 and 50% coupons each of these stores puts into our papers. They are dual tipped, one end has a brush point and the other has a fine tip that has eliminated my need to carry a pen. The stamps look great with a color coordinated marker to write in all of the details. They come in 108 different colors and can also be purchased separately.

Ok....I thought I'd dedicate one to those of you in the colder regions at this time of year. This is the one and only reason why I'm glad I didn't learn about letterboxing until after I moved to Florida <gg>.

**Winter Letterbox**

Boxes call...are you listening?
In the parks, snow is glistening.
A really cold way
Of spending the day . . .
Looking for a winter letterbox.

Gone away is the warm breeze
Giving box finding more ease.
We all see our breath
Our boots in snow depth
Looking for a winter letterbox.

Searching under snow-covered leaf piles
Behind trees and underneath some logs
Wishing boxes had a
Really good scent
So you could spend the time
To train some dogs.

Later on
we'll have more fun
as we search in the setting sun
We're not giving in
Though the day's at an end
Looking for a winter letterbox.

In the forest we've been hunting all day
We pretend that we are very near
Our boxing buddies all say that they'll pay
If we could just go home and have a beer!

When it's found...ain't it thrilling?
Though your bones are now chilling!
We'll laugh and we'll play
While we're stamping away . . .
Looking for a winter letterbox.

PZ Kut has a good side and a bad side. #A is usually marked with a blue dot. If you go to www.stampeaz.com you can check out carving tips and information. There are specifics on how to recognize which side is which. The acetone technique is not mentioned there, as far as I know, but I have found that scrubbing the PZ Kut with a paper towel that has some acetone on it helps the surface of the stamp.
An acetone scrub can be useful in transfering images also. Rather than using a Q Tip wetted with acetone on the paper, I use a scrubbing technique then immediately put the paper with the image from a printer on the PZ Kut and go over it like it was a pencil transfer. The scrubbing technique leaves the surface a little softer/gummier and if you have the right type of printer, the image will be transferred.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

If you've been following the music board for a while you'll know that my favorite dj of all time is DJ DB. I e-mail him periodically and he's a great guy. Well, he's coming to Atlanta on Friday, Feb. 11th.

If anyone has had any kind of curiousity about drum and bass/electronic music, this is THE time to go see for yourself this musical genre from one of the most-respected pioneers.

He will be spinning at the Mark, Atlanta's newest "cool" club. And it certainly looks cool from the website...

http://www.themarkatlanta.com/

It is $10 before 11pm and $15 after that.

I would like to note that this would be a nice Valentine's Day evening for the couples/friends w/o dates. Valentine's is on Monday, so this is a good way to avoid a bunch of crowded restaurants and goobers shoving roses in your significant other's face.

DB was kind enough to put me on his guest list in a trade for a stamp I'm going to carve for him and give to him that night. Needless to say I'm very happy about the whole thing.

So, if you would like to hear some drum and bass music, tune into the WRAS (88.5 FM) Friday nights at 10pm for their Subterranean show. They will be giving away tickets to see DJ DB so you might be able to win 2 and get in free!

I really, really hope to see you there!

I must admit the weather is beautiful here. The sun is shining brightly and it's about 71 outside. Perfect weather for boxing! I did get a lot in but not as much as I wanted to of course. I'll fill you all in when I get back and can take some time. Right now I am at the library using the computer and don't have my log book with me!

See you soon.

It is interesting for me to hear you say this about the PZ Kut since I've always felt I had good results with them. I did have one LB I found that I wanted to do in multiple colors but I forgot my Marvy markers or my bag of pads, so I ran to the store and bought the only thing they had-Crayolas. On that stamp the ink was not consistent if I wanted it dark. It came out blotchy. I ended up loving it though b/c the stamp is of Mr. Potatohead and it made him look like a real potato with bumps. I wouldn't use crayolas again though unless I wanted it spotty.

I haven't ever sanded my medium, but I am also checking and rechecking my stamps often as I carve them. I think the process of repeatedly stamping in and cleaning them well before sending them on to the letterboxing world may help somewhat with them taking ink. I felt the same way about the pink stuff. I haven't really carved much with mastercarve since I do enough carving to make that be out of my social worker's budget arena. I have to agree though with the statement that Mastercarve seems to bleed a bit and become a little soft for my taste given time--even if it is nice during initial carving.

It has actually been a fairly new thing for me to hear of this technique of transferring the images that Don is talking about. I also read that somewhere else earlier this week. I started by rubbing the back of paper like most of the websites say to and found that my results were so inconsistent (using any medium) and I often ended up with ink missing in spots and a light film of paper from rubbing too much that interfered with detailed carving. If I rubbed off the paper residue, it would pull the ink off with it. I quit in frustration and use mostly ironing now. It took playing around with my timing to get the iron to work well for me. If I wait too long to take the paper off or iron it too many times, it doesn't want to cooperate. I may try your way of doing it Don--that and I'm curious about the blending pens when I get my inkjet fixed. For now I use the laser printer or copy machine at work.

This is probably really obvious, but the description says I can ask anything here and not be ridiculed :)

I am trying to update my "logbook" and accidentally entered the wrong dates for a few boxes. How do I modify that?

And, fwiw, I love the idea of an unlisted boxes page. I am quite impressed with this site and am going to encourage others to join as well, but still have quite a few boxes that aren't here.

Thanks for the patience as I learn and explore...

That option is temporarily disabled since I have to rewrite the code for it, so for now you'll just have to e-mail me the pertinent details about what boxes you found and what the correct date should be.

The next big update you should be able to do that yourself, though. =)

Ryan and I decided to stay in Florida an extra day and go to the Flamingo Fiesta Gathering! Boy are we glad we did~ :-)

DebBee and family did a Fantastic Job of hosting the event! The Flamingo Theme was as pink as Atlas Quest in February.

The Event Stamp was absolutely gorgeous, there were 5 new letterboxes in Tree Tops park to find, and I think I saw some cooties or fleas getting passed around.

There were a couple of other visitors from out of state and it was great to meet the local letterboxers too! We made it back across Alligator Alley with only one alligator siting! All in all a terrific day.

Y'know, I know of quite a few boxes that are not listed anywhere. The creators of these are unlikely to take kindly to their being put into any kind of database whatsoever. Their very existence is meant to be kept underground, not publicized in any way. Funhog

Warning: Don't Read any further if you have NOT seen the Village. I spoil the whole movie for you!**************

There is an eerie resemblance between Margaret Peterson Haddix's children's book, Running Out of Time, published by Simon & Schuster in 1995, and the Shyamalan movie. The book is about a tomboyish girl in a rural village in the 1800s who comes to learn that, in fact, it is a historical preserve in 1996 and the adults have kept that secret from the children of the village. She finds out the truth when her mother sends her out to get medicine.
Supposedly Simon and Schuster was bringing a law suit against M. Night Shyamalan, but I haven't heard anything else about it since the movie came out.

Thanks, Amanda, and thanks to you and Ryan for making that trek across the state. It was a wonderful surprise to have you guys there. We had more out-of-state boxers there than locals!

And didn't Red do a fine job with our event logo? All I had to do was transfer it to the pink stuff and stay within the lines!

Now that it's over, I can start thinking about planning my own weekend boxing trips!

The argument that I read was that there was no "love story" in the book and the "love triangle" is supposedly an important part of the movie. Also, in the book, the village is being watched by people from the "real world"--It is a form of entertainment---Where in the movie, it is a retreat from the "real world" by a group of people (like a cult)

But the points that are similiar (an 1880's village hidden away from the modern world, the girl who sets off to "save" the village) are major plot points. But perhaps Simon and Schuster decided that they did not have a case, because I can't seem to find anything recent about the lawsuit. (besides, who wants to try and sue Disney?!)

-Amanda from Seattle

Ms. Haddix also has some other great Children's books. Most notably, Among the Hidden.

What a great little state. I don't know why everyone seems to complain about it so much. Hot and humid. Boo-who-whoo. The weather is GREAT! Oh, sure, it can be a bit chilly at night and you have to put a lightweight jacket on, but it's a heck of a lot worse in other places of the country!

I like Florida. There, I've said it. =) How much more fun can it be with alligators lurking around every corner and the threat of wild boars charging down the trail? Epcot was simply fun, walking through all the different countries. Heck! It wasn't even crowded! You should see Disneyland--now THAT'S crowded!

And all you boxers out there were so nice and friendly. What, dare I ask, could one possibily complain about in Florida? Well, okay, I have to admit, I do like mountains and the so-called Highlands had a lot to be desired in that sense, but if that's the worst I can complain about, Florida is the life of luxury indeed! =)

Hey Ryan.

It was really cool getting to meet you and Amanda. I wish I could have made it to the Flaming Fun Fest, but maybe I'll catch the next one.
I've lived in FL since '88. I grew up in Ohio, and I've lived in NC...so I miss the mountians myself.
But...hoo, don't tell me about FL weather. Those soft, warm breezes are nice. But I've seen hurricane winds bend steel
The jokes around here: Florida weather...we have plenty of it. and...Florida weather if you don't like it, wait a minute.
Maybe I'll get out West someday, and find out what all the fuss is about earthquakes ;-)

I've now read all of her books. They are fantastic, no doubt about it. I loved the whole Shadow Children Series. I've read all but the latest which isn't out in paperback yet.

I especially liked Turn Around. It's more of an adult book than a children's book. It offers great food for thought.
