Letterboxing Scotland

Hello folks,

I have finally gotten myself sorted so that I can easily update the Letterboxing Scotland website (http://www.letterboxing-scotland.co.uk/). I've been in touch with many of you to request that you Scottish boxes be posted on my site, and I've uploaded all that I've had permission for. We've broken 30 boxes! Woo hoo!

I am also able to easily update the links page, and have included this discussion group, amongst other things. I would be interested to hear where people find their UK supplies--particularly lino cutters.

I'm also open to any ideas as to how to raise awareness of this lovely pasttime amongst the Scottish population.

Anyway, I hope you are all out enjoying some sunshine and doing some letterboxing!

Hi Towanda, that's great news.

I've been getting my carving supplies from Fibrecrafts - www.fibrecrafts.com - I've used them twice now. They deliver quite quickly & the prices aren't too bad.

Cheers, Desperate Dan

Congratulations on the site Towanda. Sometime, when I get to Scotland, I know just where to come for the clues.

You must be joking! Today we are enjoying what the met office euphemistically calls “wintry showers”. Which is weatherman-speak for grey and miserable with occassional sleet.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I have put this discussion board down as a link, but I don't think I've used a good URL...the messages that were up at the time I copied the URL is what the viewer will see, rather than a current set of messages (don't know if this makes sense). Anyone have advice?

Given Gourock is one of the wettest towns in Scotland, I assume if the sun is shining here, it must be shining EVERYWHERE!! :) We've had a lovely run of cold, bright sunny days. After relentless torrential rain, it's very much welcome.

Not sure if this would work for you, but here's a link to the first page of comments--you'd have to go through a lot of pages to get to the current comments though. I'm not sure how to do a link that puts the most recent page on the way AQ does for us.

I think what you are asking is how to link directly to this board from a browser. You may be better off marking it as a favorite here: http://www.atlasquest.com/boards/settings.html and simply setting this as your bookmark: http://www.atlasquest.com/mypage/

However, if you want to try the direct link, it would need to be: http://www.atlasquest.com/boards/messages.html?gBoardId=220 which will show the 30 most recent messages on the UK board rather than linking to a specific one as a starting point.

Just an observation. Am I the only one to notice the two new UK letter boxes planted this weekend are virtually on the same Grid Eastings (451500)? Sad I know but I spotted it when calculating the Grid Refs for my database.

Any Ideas?

helooo fellow leterboxers!

i am hoping to go letterboxing this weekend, however i don't know which boxes to set out for...

does anyone have any boxes that are either in the NYM, nidderdale, up on sutton bank or places near that, that they would like someone else to find?(me)

it would also be nice if the boxes were a series and farely close together, but it's not essential.

Many Thanks

i have heard about the 101 boxes scheme and think it is a really good idea! however i have a few questions about it.

1) what do you get when you send off?
2) does it give you any advantages? (couldn't think of the word) Lol
3) are the stamps that say "tyke" on them any part of it? (i have seen a few of them around)

and secondly, are there any meets coming up around the NYM, sutton bank, nidderdale, places round there?

many thanks!
Happy Letterboxing!

Quote the 101 boxes scheme

Hi JorvikLB, great to see some newcomers to the area. When you have found 101 boxes listed on the official NYM catalogue you can send off for the 101 badge.
Quote does it give you any advantages

It doesn't have any advantages other than to show what you have achieved, just like the cups and ribbons on your Atlas Quest Profile.
Quote are the stamps that say "tyke" on them any part of it?

The stamps in the visitors books saying 'tyke' which you have seen, were an award 18 years ago to the first few letterboxers to find 101 NYM boxes, the condition being that they lived in Yorkshire. Also, at the same time, there was a stamp saying 'grockle' awarded to the first few letterboxers who lived elsewhere in Britain and found 101 NYM boxes.
Quote are there any meets coming up around the NYM

Unfortunately there are no immediate plans for a Meet in this area. We were hoping, but plans didn't quite work out this year. Fingers crossed for next year, or if anything suddenly happens this year we will post about it on this board as well as list it in the events.

Hey Shiloh greetings - and all my other AQ friends ! Afraid I don't get the time to chat as much as I once did on AQ, and I miss it :-( Real Life™ is just a bit chaotic, which is a pain when it interferes with letterboxing.

BTW, as a P.S. to my last post, Atlas Quest can proudly claim 3 of those 'Tykes' from the 1990's currently amongst it members. The Dawdling Deans, The Daleswoman and myself are still going strong! :-)

Fuel Costs & Letterboxing

It's good to see there's some activity on this board again.

I was wondering if the increase in fuel prices has affected other people's boxing activities. The cost of filling the tank with petrol is getting so prohibitive that think twice before starting the car. I had sort of hoped to go to the UK/USA meet in Essex but could not justify the expense to myself. I have only managed to get four or five boxes in the last few months and those were only when I was visiting an area for another purpose and there were boxes close by.

Hi YT,
Was wondering how you were, - glad to hear your OK but a shame you're
not able to get out Letterboxing at the moment.
We haven't been up to NY since January but hope to do so in the next few weeks!

the cost of fuel limits me to boxes clustered together in an area or on the way on weeks when $$$ is tight in the house.

Also, now I get very angry when placers haven't had anything but attempts in over a year, and you go there, and the box is missing. JUST LIST IT AS MISSING. Go check the box out yourself, (or ask for someone local to do it) and mention it in the clues that it's been checked. I just drove 24 miles in one direction in TN recently to find a series of 3 boxes that were all missing.

i have had a brainwave.. (i decided to treasure it they don't happen very often =] )

do you think it would be a good idea to plant a Birthday Box, and have the clue say that you can only visit it within the week of your birthday as it will have a card and stuff in, of do you think this would just annoy letterboxers if it is not their birthday.

please give you opinion!

Many thanks!

I think it sounds cute.

I imagine all sorts of birthday decorations in the box.

And if it's not your birthday, you could celebrate your "un-birthday" with it

For the Yorkshire 101 badge when it was launched at the 2006 meet things had been a bit quite around letterboxing in Yorkshire. Since the 1990's Nigel had been keeping the list up to date but there was not a lot of activity.
So we decided that all stamps found or planted would count towards the Yorkshire 101 badge ie boxes planted, boxes found, cuckoo's/ hitchikers found or launched, travellers exchanged. ( postals and virtuals do not count ) The one stipulation is they need to have been found in Yorkshire. This is unlike the Dartmoor 100 club who I believe only count boxes visited.
Hope this answers your question.

I have seen birthday boxes in Dartmoor but never in the North Yorks Moors yet !!

I think you'll find it is Dartmoor Pony. A white pony on green background is the symbol of the Dartmoor National Park.

I have a letterbox in a flower garden, under an overturned flowerpot. It's not exactly my garden, but is right in front of my house. I call it 'letterboxer bait' because of all the exchanges I've been able to make because of it. http://www.atlasquest.com/boxes/showinfo.html?gBoxId=71478

Worst problem? Insects like to hide under the pot, and come racing out all in every direction when the box is disturbed. Lots of screaming and jumping around doesn't quite meet the stealth guidelines. However, it let's me know that someone is there! Neighbors haven't paid much attention to it.

Hi, JLB-

Funny you should ask this. I was just thinking yesterday about doing one at the corner of the picket fence at the end of my front garden and was wondering if that was a done thing. Do you have one or are planning on one?
