This idea intrigues me, so I finally took the time to look it up.
What are LTCs?
LTCs are Letterbox Trading Cards.
They are a variant of Artist Trading Cards, which are small pieces of tradeable artwork. ATCs are made of cardstock or similar heavyweight paper, measure 2.5" by 3.5" (the size of a baseball card), and can use any medium or combination of media.
Some examples can be seen here:
http://www.cedarseed.com/air/atc.html
LTCs are just like ATCs, with the distinction that a Letterbox Trading Card must use a hand carved stamp somewhere in the artwork.
LTCs were invented by Mama Cache, and her page explaining them can be found here:
http://www.att.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=87&subpageid=283814&ck=
LTCs are traded by individual letterboxers, or can be traded in a ring similar to a Postal ring.
These rings are often organised under Postal, but the LTCs themselves are more usually listed on AQ under "Other", since, unlike a postal ring, the stamp itself is not sent out, only the stamp image on the cards.

So now I sortof know what they are, but how do I go about finding people to trade with? Are the trackers the only way to do it? Or do I just post a message that I have cards to trade?
Hmmmm. Off to ponder.

Yes ;-))

The trackers are fun - lots of "bang for your buck" - you make 20 cards and get 20 different ones back. But people will post to trade as well. I make some and just give them away to friends too - usually to people that it will mean something to, or who also do LTC's. I made LTC's of my kids (I did portrait stamps of them) and gave them to close friends - figuring a stranger probably isn't that interested in what my kid looks like ;-))

I made some Johnny Cash ones and gave them away to JC fans.

Well, sign me up if you have any extra Johnny Cash cards, there is no one quite like the Man in Black! In fact, I have a JC stamp I carved, and if you are interested in a trade I'd love to turn it into a LTC for you! -Mother of Five

I have spent way too much time reading about all of the different LTCs that people have made and I have a question. From what I have read I understand that much of the time people make a given number of a specific card and once they run out, then that card is no longer available. Right?
So would it be possible for people to change the listing for that card so that it shows up as "retired" or "unavailable" when it is gone so that others know not to ask for it? Or am I missing some fundamental part of this?

I just did my research, and I think this is something I would enjoy doing. I'm joining the board now. I'm not sure where to start, though. If my first LTC is anything like my first
PLB, it's going to be crappy. Since they can only be traded, does that mean that I can't receive a couple before I actually prepare my own? Are there more pictures of LTCs available for viewing? (I've only actually seen the one on MCs page.)

From what I can tell; the fact that the LTC's are traded refers to the fact that that you do not sell them. That being said; if someone will send you one it should be no problem.

Personally, I haven't put that much thought into it.... ;-)) What I have done is "Series One" and "Series Two" with the same stamp - just made the card different. When I carve a specific stamp for a LTC, I hate to just use it 20 times, then "retire" it - I'm too much of a recycler!!!

Another time, I made a stamp that I was sending away to a gather, and I wasn't getting it back. So I made a bunch of ATC's with it - those are obviously limited as I won't be on the other side of the country to restamp that image anytime soon!

I haven't even listed most of my LTC's....... guess I'd better get on that....... ;-)) But the retired or unavailable listing is a good idea. I don't think us LTC artists are that organized yet!!

All you JC fans - I've love to share!! Just send me an addy! And if you want to send an LTC back, feel free - but it's not mandatory ;-)) Except for you Mother of Five - I wanna see the JC stamp you carved ;-))

Of course, if there are a bunch of JC/LTC fans out there, we could do a small ring - that would get everyone's feet wet!! Think about it and let me know!

Since I've been seeing some new interest in LTC's, I thought I'd open a tracker for folks who have never done an LTC ring. After a reasonable amount of time, we'll open the remaining spots (if any) to repeaters.

So, if you'd like to make a set of LTC's to trade, sign up. We'll do a set of 20, and I'll send out detailed instructions when you sign up.

Jman--

an LTC is a trading card, like a baseball card, only it has your own artwork on it. And your artwork must include the image of one of your hand-crarved stamps.

it must also be a certain size (2.5x3.5 I think--check the info about them again to make sure that's right)

they are a version of ATCs (artist trading cards) which you can find a lot of information about on the internet.

hope that helps.

Yes, they can be sent through any mail box. The finished packet will be smaller than a typical postal letterbox.
