If anyone knows of sources for letterboxing clues in Scotland, it would be nice to see them posted here. This is the only web page I've been able to find so far:

How True To The Origins?

Votremerci's message asking about the differences between American and anywhere else letterboxing practices is an interesting one.

Basically, one answer was that trends in letterboxing in the UK remains more true to maps and compass, while America's style is wildly divergent, using postal rings, postal boxes, hitchhikers, and such as well as normal plantings. Surely those are prominant in practice overseas as well?

Anyone have some thoughts about this?

Curiouser and curiouser.

I can't really speak for letterboxing in the UK--my sole visit was to catch a connecting flight back to San Francisco. Never even got out of the airport.

But letterboxing in the United States--it has been fascinating to watch the progression. I started long before postal rings, virtual boxes, cooties, etc. It seems so... Americanized. Americans seem very good at adopting an idea, then building on it. We're always tearing down older buildings to make way with newer and bigger. We seem to have much less appreciation for history than other countries do where it's not uncommon to find buildings that are hundreds and hundreds of years old.

I'm not out to make a judgement call on that one--one system isn't inherently better than another--it's just different.

Map and compass clues, I suspect, probably aren't very common in the states only because most people now don't know how to use a map and compass! It's a cheap and inexpensive form of showing off, though, so I like them. ;o)

Add Dartmoor to City field

Some of us have sent letterboxes over to Dartmoor which have since been placed on the moors.

I just entered mine, with the Dartmoor 100 Registration Number. I was able to enter "ENG" for State and "UK" for country, but I was not able to enter "Dartmoor" for city. In fact, there are no cities at all listed for England. Now my box shows up as a mystery box because I couldn't enter Dartmoor.

Given the fact that I know of at least 10 boxes we sent across the pond, do you think it would be possible to add just the one city of Dartmoor to ENG UK?

Thanks!

I had posted a message here (#3455) with links and re-published clues to Scotland letterboxes. It appears to have been removed from the list. Was it deliberately removed or is this a glitch?

Hmm.... According to the logs, it shows *you* as having deleted that post. =) So if you really didn't delete that post, there's definitely a glitch somewhere. Could you perhaps have tried to delete a different message around that time and accidentally deleted this one instead?

In any case, since you clearly seem to not want this post deleted, I've "undeleted" for you. =)

Happy trails!

No, I have not tried to delete that nor any other post on Atlas Quest, can't even think of a reason why I would attempt to do so. Thanks for undeleting it, though.

Hi all,

My fiance and I will be in the UK for 3 weeks from 17 May. For one week of that time we will be in Dartmoor staying in a rented holiday cottage.

Does anyone have any dartmoor letterboxing advice to share?

We'll also be visiting a few large cities as well so might be able to check out some urban boxes.

Cheers!

Hello folks,

Just wanted to post an updated link for the Letterboxing Scotland site:

http://letterboxing-scotland.co.uk/

Not sure why the former is no longer working. Please let us know if you plant a box in Scotland and want the clues posted to our site.

Happy boxing!

We struck out on Jely Bean's, found Amanda's "Pipes", but didn't have an opportunity to chase down any others. I'm sporting a bad knee so the Tor boxes were out of the question and we were on a Bus Tour for most of our Scotland stay. We did have a car when we went to the Borders area, but we had to cram several Abbeys, castles, houses in our time there. I was set up for two days of clay shooting at Braidwood near Selkirk which was one of the highlights for me at the end of our Dartmoor/Scotland trip. What a great country and wonderful folks.

Hello,
Very nice site. Through another activity, postcrossing, I get questions about letterboxing. I'll point the UK ones to this site now.

Thanks,

Quote were do i look for the clues about boxes posted on dartmoor ???

Hello PPLOD

I'm not sure if Ryan has posted his clues yet, but if you look up to the top of the page, run your mouse onto Letterboxes, then click on Advanced Search a page will come up. Type in Dartmoor, UK, and you should have a list.
Some of the listings pertain to a bunch of stamps that were sent over to the Happy Wanderer to plant and may not really have clues as yet.
Gwen & I were over there last March, and really loved the area. We have one plant at Bowerland.

From the main page at http://www.atlasquest.com you can search for letterboxes from pretty much any city in England. For the state, type ENG (short for England, of course!).

I deliberately added the 'city' of Dartmoor so you can search for that as well, but pretty much any city will work. Princetown, Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Postbridge, Stratford-upon-Avon, London, etc, etc.

Now that I have a better idea of how Dartmoor letterboxing actually works--and it seems to be based more on the 'tor system' rather than the 'city system'--I want to support all the tors in Dartmoor as well. Once I figure out how to convert from the British grid system to latitude and longitude, though, you'll be able to search for King Tor, Cox Tor, etc. rather than by cities.

There aren't many Dartmoor boxes listed on AQ, though. Mostly just a handful from us state-side visitors passing through.

There's also the option of looking through the box directory at http://www.atlasquest.com/lboxes/boxdirectory.html

Click on United Kingdom (which shows 21 boxes listed), then England (which has 16 boxes listed), and it'll have links to those 16 boxes. Or just skip ahead to the final link which is at http://www.atlasquest.com/lboxes/boxdirectory3.html?gStateId=1943

Welcome to Atlas Quest! =)

My Parents are going on a trip to Europe and asked me if I knew how to find clues for boxes in London and Paris. I am assuming that they will probably not be straying too far from those main areas while there. If anyone knows of clue sites for those areas please let me know.

Thank you

Try the Urban Letterboxing database:
http://www.spacehijackers.org/letterboxing/search.php

Do a search for "Boxes in this city: London". You'll find approximately 15 urban letterboxes in London. You'll find 1 in Paris.

Hi tales

There is a web site "Off Dartmoor" and I sent the link to Princess Lea prior to her trip with Ryan and Amanda and can not currently find it. You might contact her to see if she still has it.
The site is put up by the same folks that have the Dartmoor site so you could cruise around in google. Another person I sent it to was Towanda (see messages in UK boards for 'Scotland' site for her address).

Hi Guys

I think the website you are referring is the Dartmoor Bounders “Off Dartmoor Clue catalogue”. Try this link

http://www.ian.kirkpatrick2.btinternet.co.uk/page1.htm

The only area I can vouch for is Hampshire, I do most of my boxing there and there are about 1000 boxes in pleasant, easy walking country. Either contact Brian Fielder via the link given or myself for more info.
