The Update - Event Stamps

I'm loving the new update..especially the support for event stamps. In the past I had just listed them under "unlisted"...so it's nice having a special place for them to go!

I also love the new support for EXTREME boxes...although I am afraid you have created a monster here, Ryan. My WOM boxes may come out of the darkness after all! woo hoo!!

'Sweet Treats' RING now posted on AQ...+, info
Board: Postals
Dec 1, 2005 6:38am
Thread Board
Allrighty, I just posted the 'Sweet Treats' ring to AQ (AWESOME feature add, by the way).

All members of the ring, please check that I've submitted your name to the ring. I think I've got everybody (with the exception of ThunderEagle, who is in the ring with Thunderbird, but I don't believe he has a AQ profile).

There seems to still be a glitch with listing the boxes within the ring, so I'll wait to hear from our esteemed Green Tortuga on if and when that is fixed. Apparently, it can't find the boxes that have been listed so far. So, we'll have to wait a bit on that.

And that's it for right now.

If I have this correct (and somehow I think I don't):

- Rings not PLBs -- We should no longer create regular postal letterboxes but only postal letterbox rings. A regular PLB is just a ring with only one box. Is that right? (This sounds confusing to new users.)
- Recreate and reenter PLBs -- Meanwhile we need to reenter any of our active PLBs with a new listing and people will have to sign up for them again? Should we Retire the old one?
- Find your old signups in your Logbook - Look in your Logbook for Postal Signups to see what you had signed up for.

I am trying figure this out so no one should act on my list yet. Listen to Ryan.

Hey - I think you are onto something there!

I *will* not volunteer to organize it (I'll let DixieKin do that!), but I'd happily volunteer to put together a "Swamp Yankee" postal letterbox with stamps from all things South County, RI regarding food (clams with bellies, coffee milk, gaggas), complete with postcards, a listing of Swamp Yankee-ese, and maybe even a Don Bousquet book of uniquely RI cartoons.

Any other takers?

Quote According to the new ring help section, I think that it is acceptable to have rings of just one box. If you do it that way, there is a link at the bottom of the participant list to contact all participants You can make sign-ups open, so anyone can sign up, or limit sign-ups in various ways.

that sounds like what I was expecting with regular postals during this update...unless there is some reason that postals should not show sign-ups...some reason I just am not thingking of or considering....

no, i think what Ryan meant when he said all postals are rings was that in code, AQ does't list just a'postal box'. It will list a ring, instead, which may only have one box.
Or, a ring may have twelve boxes.

you don't have to do anything different when listing a PLB, you still list it as a PLB unless it's part of a ring. Then, you specifiy that it's a ring (or part of a ring...i'm still fuzzy on that one).

AS for recreating and reentering PLB's...I dunno. I like to keep my own list in Excel of my postal recipients, so I wasn't really using AQ's signup feature. Whenver somebody signed up via AQ, i AQ mail'd them, and got their info for my own list.

Tried to post this in the reading room but it seems to be temporarily out of order. Just wanted to recommend a hilarious holiday book for those of you who are into that kind of thing.

My fave holiday book to share among friends is David Sedaris' "Holiday on Ice." This is a collection of short holiday stories that will keep you laughing. I love all of David's work and have all of his books as well as tapes of his concerts and I got to meet him at one as well! A truly gifted writer with a wicked tongue. If you ever get a chance to go see him..DO IT. But if you can't.....this collection is the next best thing.

Oh, yes, that's a known bug that I've been too scared to work on with all of the other changes I've been making. It's hard to test PayPal code on my development site! So I generally do that on the live site and I couldn't until this update was in place.

But I do know about it and make sure to update the premium membership before things go awry. =)

All is good now!

Still have to fix the bug, but you're set for the year. *nodding*

Create a ring for it. Rings can have a single box, then people can sign up for it like they would have directly for the postal box--but it's much more flexible through the ring. =)

So create a new ring, add your postal box, and you're set. =) Well, you'll still need people in your ring. For existing rings, set the ring status to closed and add all of the members individually who already signed up.

That is correct. You can't change the type of a letterbox once it's been selected, so e-mail me the details if it needs to be done and I'll make it happen. =)

They aren't together anymore since the hand-carved and premium members only attributes can now be applied to any type of letterbox--not just traditional ones. That first page tries to gathering information about boxes that's applicable to all boxes, while that second page tries to gather information specific to just traditional letterboxes.

How bizarre. I tried it on my development machine and it worked fine. So I tried it on the live site. It didn't work. But not seeing anything wrong with the code, I put some debugging information in, and uploaded it check out the results--and it worked! The bizarre part that I didn't fix any of the code--I just added debugging info. So I took out the debugging info, uploaded the file, and it worked.

Bizarre, but for whatever reason, it seems to work now. =)

Personally, I haven't been out riding in years. But my Dancing Maenad Box is located in a park that offers "Horse Camping"

Since I didn't have time to set up interesting clues. I figured this feature will add interest to people visiting this beautiful little park. That and the lake and miles of trails

Quote Rings not PLBs -- We should no longer create regular postal letterboxes but only postal letterbox rings. A regular PLB is just a ring with only one box. Is that right?

Not correct. Postal boxes are just a listing that a postal box exists. A ring is a method of organizing how they should be passed from person to person. Postal boxes can live without rings, but rings cannot live without postal boxes. Sounds spooky when I put it like that, eh? =)

If you have a postal box that you want to be part of a ring, first you'll need to list the box as a regular postal letterbox. (Because it is!) Then add it to the ring it should be a part of.

Quote Recreate and reenter PLBs -- Meanwhile we need to reenter any of our active PLBs with a new listing and people will have to sign up for them again? Should we Retire the old one?

No, no, no! All pevious postal boxes still exist and work just fine. None should be marked as retired, none should be deleted, and none need to be reentered. It's the ring information that is confusing you. =) I've pulled out the signup functionality that used to be a part of postal boxes and moved it into the ring.

However, since AQ never supported rings in the past, that information needs to be entered. For each ring you own, create a ring, then add all of the people and postal boxes that are a part of it.

Quote Find your old signups in your Logbook - Look in your Logbook for Postal Signups to see what you had signed up for.

For those people who don't keep paper records of which postal boxes they're a part of, yes. That way, they can still have something to refer to which shows what boxes they signed up for.

Though it just occurred to me--if the owner of a ring didn't keep records of who signed up for the ring, they won't have an easy way to look up that information. Lemme tweak the code so the postal box itself will show old signups that the owner of a ring can refer to. =) Give it about five or ten minutes before looking up postal boxes for signup information....

Happy trails!

so....are you saying that even if a postal is not a "ring" that you have to create it as one in order for people to sign up?? will that not possibly leave a door open for confusion...people thinking its a ring when it's a single box requiring sign-up and not requiring them to make their own box?? you can't sign up for a single?? just a ring??

sorry...just trying to make my mind work around this.

Now, here in WNY, it's POP.
That's an ongoing feud between people, here and elsewhere, that makes me laugh.

I prefer 'pop', because that's what I grew up with. To me, a 'soda' is what I get down the street at Condrell's, an ice cream place, and it's scoops of ice cream in a big glass, wth 'soda' or 'pop' flavoring. Yummy, by the way. Now, note this is NOT a 'float'- those have ice cream in them, as well, but instead of 'soda/pop' flavoring, they have actual soda/pop in them. Also very yummy.

My grandparents, who live in Owego, have always referred to it as 'soda'.
Dances With Music, who lives here in Buffalo with my gang, origionally hails from South Dakota. It's 'soda' out there, too.

I most of the time say 'pop', but occasionally (most of the time just to avoid the arguement), I call it 'soda pop'.
