You are so nice to your special kitty. 12 is only middle aged for a cat, so she can probably cope, especially since you are taking such good care of her and are trying to relieve her stress. Have you tried catnip to get her to come out from under the bed? Of course, I don't know if that would interfere with the drugs you are trying to give her, but it might entice her to come out! Good luckwith the kitty and the move. storm rider

Sorry to hear your furry friend is having trouble with moving. Change is hard on some animals AND people. Do the best you can. Be patient. Be very loving. I'm sure you are but wanted to give you a little extra support. I had a cat that got depressed. But with him, it was after we had him fixed. We had just moved so he lost two things. His home that he was used to and now his...... Poor kitty. He did come out of it. So hang in there. Do what you would do for your child and I'm sure she will be just fine.

Sending "kitty support" and extra love,
Tri-Colored Paws

She gets really weird with catnip, she is quite a mean drunk! She didn't come out all night so this morning I finally moved the bed and pulled her out. She is now sitting cuddled next to me. She finally got her first dose of medicine. It can take 5 days to a couple of weeks to work so we won't know if it helps for a while. Man I hope it does. One time when we moved she would find ways to crawl up IN the box springs of the hotel beds. I really hope she doesn't remember that trick. It's not the easiest place to get a cat out from.

Tuna. Use tuna. I have a cat that has been on meds her whole life, so she takes pills pretty well. But recently we have had to put her on interferon - which has to be mixed in saline, so it is really salty, and we were having a heck of a time getting her to take it. A friend suggested putting it on a salty fish - like tuna - so she thought it was a treat. The vet said that was fine if we only give her about a tablespoon a night, and make sure the tuna is canned in water, not oil.

Works like a charm. Now she comes running the second we shake the pill bottle because she knows she's going to get tuna.

Give your kitty her meds, and then give her just a small amount of tuna right after and she will associate taking her meds with a good experience, not a bad one.

You also may want to check into a product called Rescue Remedy. I get it at Whole Foods and it is a mild sedative that you can give your animals (it goes in their water) for things like lightning, or new animals coming in to the home, or moving.

Good luck!

Have you used the Rescue Remedy? We have two other cats who might benefit from a mild sedative during the move. I'm not as worried about them, they are not quite as neurotic as Boba.

Your story made me think of the time long ago when we had a family picture taken with our cat, Cleveland.
He got out somehow before time and got in the photographer's laundry room (home studio) and got himself stuck behind the dryer.
In the picture that we all did live to take, I have my arm clamped down on him so hard, it's a wonder he isn't still imbedded in my leg!
He's been gone for a very long time now, but he was one great cat.
Thanks for bringing that back around so fresh, and the VERY BEST of luck to you guys in your move.

I have used Rescue Remedy on my cats. It just kinda chills them out, and I didn't have to go to the vet to get 'kitty downers' for the 4th of July!

Good luck with the move. I live in the Denver area - so hopefully we'll get a chance to swap stories in person!

I wish they had Rescue Remedy for humans. I could use a little right now. Oh, I know! It's called Jack Daniels! And you get it at that special store!

You can use it. I buy mine at the health food store and have used it on myself as well as the dogs. It is awesome. I used it when I was defending my dissertation - it just took the edge of my nervousness off without making me sleepy or too relaxed.

When you buy the Rescue Remedy, do you buy the one for humans and give it to your pets or do you buy the one specifically for pets for your pets and the human one for you? I ask because frequently they are the same thing just in different packaging and if you are buying it at a health food store it seems that they would only have the human one? The human one is also much cheaper =o) I am definitely interested in this for our cats should we be moving.

Cheers!

Honestly, I didn't even know they had one specifically for pets. I just get the human one, the tincture that you administer via a dropper, rather than the mist. When I'm gone for long periods of time, I have the dog sitter add drops to the water and it really seems to help. I've also added drops directly to my dogs' tongues for more immediate effect.
