Addicted? No.

I am not addicted.

Really, I'm not.

I just do this for the kids. They have fun. So what if I have to coax them into going. They really like it! I just have to explain how fun it is to go to all the places the boxes take us.

Letterboxing addictive? No!

Carving addictive? No, I've only carved 5 stamps for others... and well have 5 stamps with nothing to do... 3 ready to plant... 11 already planted. I have been at this for awhile you know. A couple months at least.

Nope, Not addicted.

The Zoo... so NOT in denial ;)

The part he ISN'T telling you is that the "one fall" happened at the top, and he rolled the rest of the way down....

No, the part I haven't told you was the one time a ski fell off my boot halfway up the ski lift and I had to walk halfway down the mountain with one ski to retrieve the other one. *sigh*

I did that on my second day on the slopes, though. The trickiest part, however, was how to get OFF the ski lift when it reached the end! I made quite a mess of that... What a fiasco. *shaking head* =)

Wow! I was surprised when I surfed to AQ today. Make sure your speakers are down.

My goodness that little drummer man at the bottom of the page is loud.

Happy 4th everyone! Have a safe letterboxing weekend :)

So Electric and I come back from an event and tell my mom and dad all the fun that we had. We then proceed to talk about our event in September and they both volunteered to help. That being said, we have created stamps for them. Their stamps will only be available from them but are listed under my account.

Did I forget to mention that Medic's Mom has agreed to grill dinner for after the Paris event? Well, she is and the event is listed so check it out.

Here - Here,

Thanks to all indeed! We had such a fun time with you all. We considered it an absolute privilege to spend time with such a wonderful group.

Grateful for Pete and Steve who logged all those miles planting these great boxes for us.
It was all Steve - the man's a crazy boxing lunatic! He's like the energizer Rabbit with hiking shoes!!!!!!

Although Pete is exaggerating the boxing comment, I had to run constantly to keep up with him! He's right about the lunatic part though : )

There really is so much to be thankful for, but without all the people that came to share and enjoy it would have been just another day. So thank you to all of you that should up and enriched our lives by simply being there. We enjoyed your company, and the chance to get to know some truly amazing people.

Thank you,
Steve - WW's

You have to check out Lunagirl's Hideaway. It's a fun walk in a great park, and a beautiful stamp. I am also partial to A Dinosaur and His Hill - somebody else planted it, but I liked the story so much that when they dropped out of letterboxing I adopted it. If you're at Oakland, the Letterbox of Piglet is really close too.

Anybody downgrade box ratings because the clues are full of misspellings, bad grammar, incomplete sentences and faulty punctuation

I do. I also downgrade if they use "text speak" in their clues. If some one is not willing to take the time to spell out y-o-u, what makes me think they will take the time to place and maintain a quality box?

I overlook some errors--misspelling of one or two words, etc. because spelling is not everybody's strength, and everybody makes errors. I have low tolerance for carelessness, which is what multiple errors suggest to me, however. Call me a snob. You would be right.

My son will be going into the 4th grade this coming school year. He hates to read. Does anyone have some tricks of the trade to get their children to love reading? He also hates to write but I am working on that. I know that they go hand in hand. I am trying the reading program through the local library. They give out prizes after you read so many pages. He thinks that he needs to do that all at once. I tell him he doesn't have too. He can read just a few pages one night and few more the next night. But he is still having a hard time. Any advise will be welcoming.

You are obviously one of those letterboxers with a built in sensor, like a radar scope, that points you right at the hiding place. I have hiked with the likes of you, and marvel at this!!!! LOL

I, too, notice all kinds of spelling and grammar mistakes, but I can usually let them slide. But, there is one I keep seeing, here and in other forums, which I feel I must correct...

VOILA! (with an accent mark which I don't know how to produce)

I am NOT picking on anyone who spells this incorrectly, I just had to get it off my chest.
Done, now. Thank you.

A few thoughts that have worked for some other reluctant readers I have known. (And not worked for a few as well--use what works for you)

First, high interest books!! This can be challenging at the middle levels, I know. Look back over the last few days at the Percy Jackson thread. Lots of good suggestions there. I know one boy who finds fiction excruciating but give him a biography of a sports star or military history and he goes to town. High-interest magazines can also be good.

Check out http://www.guysread.com Lots of good stuff there!

Limit his contest reading time. Sounds counter-intuitive, I know, but it sounds like he gets frustrated trying to complete the whole amount in one time, so tell him he can only read 5 pages or for 15 minutes --then give him a small reward (and i mean small-like a jolly rancher, a quarter, whatever)

Read to him. My kids are 12,10, and 7. All avid readers. I still read to them. Pick a book he is interested in but might be a bit above his level and read. We like to do this at bedtime--everybody piles into my bed, I read out loud, then we all return to whichever book we are currently reading independently.

Hope this helps get you started. Truthfully, he may never love reading. Some people don't. But you will know that you gave him the opportunity to fully explore the world of books.

My son will be going into the 4th grade this coming school year. He hates to read.

Sometimes they hate to read because it's too much like work, so make it easy. Start with books that are easy and quick to read. Try a series of books like The Magic Treehouse books that are made to grow with the child - they become more difficult as the series progresses.

Also, there are graded readers (I found at Walmart). They had ones about super heroes, lizards, historical figures, just to name a few. It was easy to find different subjects to interest my son at at age from these books.
