50 people! That's HUGE!!! What a crowd. Sounds like a very successful gathering! The Jiggs were there! Wanda and Pete AND Hikers and Hounds! WOW! I wish I could have been there.

Well, in comparison to the MMM, it was barely a showing, but honestly, we were GLAD we didn't have that many folks. This was nice and intimate, even though we met tons of new people. We really had a great time!

This is a hobby we really love...it's like letterboxing but with more uniform stamps. This is the explanation from http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/4434/passport.html

The Nation's natural treasures--our national parks--are all wrapped up for you in one handy package with the Passport To Your National Parks program. This 104-page travelogue includes color-coded maps, pre-visit information, illustrations and photographs. Designed in a 6" x 3" format that fits conveniently in a pocket or pack, this spiral-bound book makes it easy to explore both well-known parks like Grand Canyon and lesser-known areas like Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The Passport also provides you with a unique and interesting way to record up to five years of park travels, with official park "cancellation" marks. These rubber stamp markings, similar to the ones international travelers receive in their passports, record your visit by noting the park name and date of your visit. Individualized with commemorative stamps and park cancellations, your Passport becomes a uniquely personal travel scrapbook.

Basically, you buy the logbook they're talking about for about $8. You can also buy little stamps that describe the parks to add to your book. The actual stamping park is the cancellation. When you go to the parks and they let you stamp in with a circular stamp that resembles a passport stamp (name of park around the outside, date you were there in the middle) It's just like finding a letterbox and in MANY cases, you can find LBs at the parks you're going to, anyway!

The two downsides are that the stamps are basically identical except for park name and date, plus you do have to pay for some parks to get in. However, we've found that investing in a National Parks Pass ($50 for a year, cheaper for seniors or folks with disabilities http://www.nps.gov/fees_passes.htm) has been invaluable.

We know other people do this, too (and we've met many park stamp hunters who letterbox as well), so let's hear from you if it's something YOU do!

that's the info i was looking for! i wonder if it was accidently left out of the new LbNA database or if it was done on purpose. Nevertheless I might run out that way and see if my good friend is still there. I emailed the owner but never got a response.

I'm so thrilled today, I found my fourth ever letterbox and it had a hitchhiker! (my first HH!) woohoo.

thanks bunches!

You're welcome! =) I was going to put it up the day after Thanksgiving, but Amanda talked me into waiting until the first of December. She hand-drew all those snowflakes in the title bar image! Well, computer-drew them, at least. My original shot at it was a few dots of snow, and it didn't look nearly as good.

Happy trails!

Hi alysonwonderland! Congrats on your 4th and a HH. If you have questions about HH etiquette, please don't hesitate to ask.

The reason that the box you found was not on the current LbNA site is b/c the owner probably never responded when asked about their box by letterboxing.org webmasters. They upgraded the website and all boxes that weren't re-entered into the new website format were archived in the basement or on the old site (that link you got from Funhog). So that's the story.

But I'm very interested to know if it is still out there. Please keep us informed.

Thanks,
Mark

That happens sometimes when your browser is using images from the cache rather than pulling the new ones off Atlas Quest. Just click the Refresh button a couple of times and it'll look fine. I had to use it twice to get ALL of the images to convert over, but it could vary depending on your browser and operating system. If all else fails, clearing the cache on your browser completely will fix the problem!

Pesky little turkey, huh? :) He's got something to say, and nothing will silence him! ;o)

There is an option under your preferences now that allows you to set what time zone you're in. You might prefer to reset it than use the default one of the Pacific time zone. ;o)

Also, I know it's not winter in New Zealand, but I haven't figured out how to give you guys a summer theme while almost everyone else on Atlas Quest would use a winter theme, so I hope you can put with with this small indulgance of mine! It won't last forever! ;o)

Happy trails!

Refresh, refresh, refresh. =) You're seeing the cached version of the graphics and CSS pages in your browser, and you need to force the browser to lookup the new ones. Usually clicking Refresh a couple of times will solve the problem. =)

Sent an email to the owner of the box letting him know what was going on. I was curious if he knew or not because he had just pulled the box for maintenance on the 11/28.

My response from Matt:
"Thanks for the heads-up. A friend happened to be watching the news and told me about it but I hadn't seen the video and didn't know it was on the website. I had no idea they were doing the story and I don't know the woman in the story.

I have mixed feelings about the publicity because it could get a few more people in the Triangle involved in the hobby, or it could wreck the series and I'll have to re-hide them in new locations. We'll see! Ironically just after the story aired I (unknowingly) pulled two of the three boxes for maintenance. I'm putting them back on Friday and I'll start checking them more often.

I don't check the message boards more than once every week or two so I didn't know I was famous! Gosh, hopefully I'll still be able go to the grocery store without getting mobbed : )"

I added the contrast for visited pages when I first make the message boards so people could distinguish between which messages they've read and which ones they haven't.

Now that there's a link that will list all new unread posts, I figured it wasn't as important anymore. And depending on where you read the link from, it's not even always accurate, so I took it out again.

Was this a popular feature? I can put it back if necessary....

Keep refreshing! =) The autumnal leaves are no longer on the server, so if you're still seeing leaves, it's coming out of the cache for your browser.

If all else fails, you can always delete your browser's cache completely which will force it to pick up the new graphics.

I know that Princess Lea has been doing The national park thing and also the light house stamps as well. There is a program for the light houses. Alot of them have stamps and you can get a booklet (passport) and collect them in it.

http://www.lilighthousesociety.org/passportprogram/default.htm

If you fill up your passport, you can get a embroidered patch that says "I've seen the Light!" ---considering that so many letterboxes are by lighthouses already...you could collect the stamp images as well! They are also very accomodating. If the lighthouse information area is closed and you have visited the lighthouse, you can take a picture and paste it in your booklet, or draw an image on your passport page and they will accept that as proof that you were there!

That sounds cool, too? Is there a site where you can see other lighthouses in the program? The link you have only gives the Long Island ones, but I know there's a TON along Lake Ontario...even been to one and have the pic, so if it qualifies, guess what WE'RE gonna start doing! ;-)
