Non letterboxing question

In the photo on the Tittesworth Reservoir website there is a picture of a goose. It looks like a Canadian goose. Is it? Are there Canadian geese in the UK? My US boxing partner wants to know and I wasn't sure what to tell her.

Yes, there certainly are Canada geese in the UK. At "our" sailing lake in Wiltshire twenty or so nest there in the summer. And leave their "calling cards" all over the place!

I take it these "calling cards" aren't the type you find in a plastic box with a rubber stamp?

Thanks Wildflower+2 for that sentiment. Everyone, this is my US bxing partner. She really does love me and she misses me terribly b/c she can't find anyone else to box with now that I am here. She was the one who originally ask the question about the geese. So, now she knows. Thanks DM for answering that question. I am so sorry they have spoiled "your" lake!

They were introduced, probably sometime in the 19th century as an ornamental wildfowl. See the RSPB website

Hi, I'm Lexi from Raleigh, North Carolina, United States - I'm in the process of planning my European vacation and I'm planning on visiting Dartmoor sometime during the first two weeks of May - From the small amount of research I have done and the limited amount of people I have spoken to this is not like the U.S. version - My main question is how far from London-Gatwick International Airport is Dartmoor? Is there a train system that I can take? Is it true there are no clues to these boxes and you basiclly poke around till you find them? I heard that you don't get any help until you have found 100 boxes or a clue book? A dear friend told me that there are monthly events being held at Dartmoor. Is there one the first two weeks of May? If anyone could please be so kind to help me it would be greatly appriacated. Thanks - Song Of Joy / Lexi

dartmoor is about 5 hours driving from gatwick. I didn't see train tracks, but that doesn't mean there is no service. you don't get to buy the cluebook until you have 100 finds, although there are a few dartmoor boxes listed at AQ. cranmere pool is a 5 km walk one way from the nearest road, and few there are who will tell you exactly where it is. I understand you can be standing within 20 feet of it and not see it. the park has their own website, here, and they have an entire page devoted to letterboxing. they also have a calendar listing events, and will send you free information if you ask for it.

Hi Lexi,

Dartmoor is about 250 miles from London. You could get there by train from Gatwick by going first to London (there's a train direct from the airport) then from London to either Exeter or Plymouth. You could then use buses to get to the moor itself. A couple of web sites might help:

http://www.trainline.co.uk for the trains and http://www.traveline.org.uk for the buses.

Hopefully someone who lives down that way might be able to give you some guidance on the buses.

Officially, the clues are only available to 100 club members, but I'm sure you could get a copy of at least some of them if you tell them you're on a visit from overseas. The contact details are on the 100 club website:

http://www.letterboxingondartmoor.co.uk/

There are regular meets in Plymouth, but I'm afraid I don't know much more than that - again, hoperfully someone else will be able to help on that one.

There are also a couple of great little boxes on Box Hill which is near Gatwick (you can get a train to Dorking Deepdene station then walk to them).

Hope you have a great time.

Desperate Dan

I have planted a box at Tittesworth Reservoir. I have not gotten to the clues up yet. Will do soon. It is called " Super Loveable Letterbox" and is a Mothering Sunday Salute! I made my family box with me on Sunday in Stafford and then we went to Tittesworth. Nice little spot for a hike, picnic, lunch, or play on the very cool adventure playground. Lovely views of the Roaches and Staffordshire Moorlands too. Come find it if you are headed toward or going thru Leek at anytime.

I am trying to post my clues for this new box and I can't get the city or location (Leek, Tittesworth Reservoir) to validate. Any tips? I have contacted the Administator and am awaiting a reply.

For the City, enter Leek. For the state, enter England (provided it is England), and for the country enter UK.

I did check the mapquest link on the clue. It is not right on Leek, but close enough. This is not a hard place to find on the web or on a UK map of the area. Hopefully anyone going out there will do some of their own reseach before getting in the car and driving.....Thanks...

Yeah, I thought that too.

I would call it 53.106620, -2.026730 instead of 53.098864, -2.062648

Great to see some boxes going out in the Peak District. It was only last month that a friend asked me if there were any in that area.

I have been horribly inactive as far as letterboxing and AQ goes--although I did get out to Dartmoor to see the Moortorists last summer, which was great. I just wanted to check in and say howdy. I keep hoping to plant some boxes here in South Wales. I hope you all are well.

MY sister and brother-in-law just arrived in Israel and are hoping to find Mr. B still in business so they can get your LB at his shop (for us). Any idea what they might find?

I think the box is still active. If you talk to them while they are out there, ask them if they can see if Baghdadi has an email addy I can contact him at. I've been hoping to order some carvings from him for a friend who used to live in Jerusalem and wanted some.

They literally just arrived within the past hour -- called us when they were through the airport (Tel Aviv). We expect tp speak with the several times so we will ask -- they will be in Jerusalem maybe at the beginning of next week -- I'll check the itinerary!

Thanks for giving us another job for them. They are somewhat hesitant about going to find the box, but this will make it more likely they will look :>)!
