Now don't try to tell me that your Yankee Canyon series was carved the day before. I think they come under the title of your"dandies".

The last post got me thinking about how I saw Don's nifty old cigar box that he kept his carving tools and such in. Are you still using that? It seems like the last time I saw you, you had something else.

I'm still using the cigar box, but it seems as though I need an annex now.

Did you read the original Mildred Wirt text or the revision from the 1960s? The older version is much more gripping, but I have to admit that you sort of need to be a 9-year-old girl to get the excitement of it all. I really ought to make more Nancy Drew themed letterboxes....

We will be getting boxes out very soon. It is pay back time.

Woooo, I can't wait! That is so sweet that you found your first box on your 39th! Very special to be sure! I hope MM and I can follow your wonderful example! And, that you have as much fun planting your new box's as we will finding them.

I really hate cross-posting, but I'm going to do it with this one, to be sure anyone who might be interested gets the word. To those of you who wind up getting it two or three times, I'm sorry!

Florida's Fabulous Flamingo Fiesta, a picnic gathering for letterboxers, will take place on February 5, 2005 at Tree Tops Park in Davie, FL. (Fort Lauderdale area) For directions to the park, see the "Top o' the Trees" letterbox on LbNA.

Someone will be there starting at about 9 am, to hold our spot, so anytime you want to get there after that is fine. I think 10:30 or 11 will be our official start time, but there are boxes in the park (and will be more for the event) so you might want to stop by, check in, and then go hunt.

Bring your own main course and also a dish to share, if possible. I'm going to make every attempt to have a grill there, so folks can cook burgers or whatever if they want, but that's not confirmed yet.

If possible, it'd be great if you could let me know you're coming, so I'll have SOME idea of numbers. If you're bringing kids, let me know that, too. We should have a couple of boxes carved and hidden by kids, for kids (though adults are welcome to search for them, too!) If, however, at the last minute, you suddenly find out that you can come after all, come on. Don't NOT come just because you didn't RSVP!

After lunch, we'll do a mass exchange, hopefully a group photo, and maybe a few surprises.

Any questions, I'm at: StDebb@aol.com.

Looking forward to meeting all who can come!

We spent New Years Eve and day at Calloway Gardens. It was quite wonderful! We picked up Cherokee Rose's Quilting Box and Fluttering Around GA box and the Snail Trail box by Quill. We were suprisingly FF at this box. We also placed a box inside Calloway Gardens. It is the first in a series we are doing on Disney Lovers as a tribute to our honeymoon. It was nice to be out boxing again! Happy New Year to everyone!

I went to pull the Paul Frank Tribute for maintainence and the boxes were in horrible condition. The logbooks were all wet, the stamps are missing pieces (yet another reason not to use the white stuff by speedball) and one was molded. So, I decided to retire all of them. I know a few of you were in the middle of the series and if you want to still get the stamp I can mail it to you. Or if you are going to be at Victorianna's I can bring it. Anyhow, just email me is you still wanted to see any of the boxes and thanks to everyone who went and got the boxes.

Hello out there. I am fairly new to Atlas quest. I don't know if this questions has be addressed, but I thought this "reading room" would be the best place to post and ask. For most people who read go to the Library.

Does anyone out there know anything about Library Letterboxing. You know for people who live up North and need to hibernate during the Months of Dec. through March. I found somewhere that you should look for the box under the library number 796.14 or 769.51? Well I know that my Library doesn't participate but has agreed to let me open one and they would let me keep it there.

Does anyone one have a Library Box. And what and how do I prepare it?

OK <wicked grin>

I spent my New Year's day/ morning over at Magic Kingdom. I got my first "Disney" box planted. One of many...but my first one. I don't know how long it will last, but it is a small box. Less than 2" square. And I feel that it is a good spot.
The clues are as hokey as all 'ell. But I am quite proud of my pirate stamp.

Not sure if this is an old issue or one that folks may not have encountered. I originally listed my hitchhikers as mystery boxes until you made the HH option available. I have not switched those boxes to be listed as HH's because I'm lazy.

I notice now that I go to accomplish this that the "edit letterbox" feature has the option for selecting it as a hitchhiker instead of the "normal" letterbox, however it will not allow me to remove the normal listing.

This is set up differently in AQ as a table for the hitchhikers? Anyhoo - I'll make the slow transition from the normal listing to hitchhiker status, I was just wondering why the "edit" feature did not take care of that?

Thanks,
Phyto

Ah, yeah... I tried to discourage people from listing HH's until a hitchhiker option was available since I knew it would be problematic to convert them later.

Ypu. Once a box is entered, you can't switch what type of box it is. Different types record different information in different tables. "Normal" boxes store information about trail length and location--which have no equivelents in the hitchhiker world. And people who've found hitchhikers can record where and in what box they found the hitchhiker--something that those who find normal boxes don't have to worry about.

Consequently, there's not really an easy programmatic way to convert a box between different types--and in rare cases is there ever a reason to do so in the first place. So, alas, there is no way to convert between them on the website, and probably never will be.

But if you give me a list of the boxes you'd like converted, I can manually tweak the database a bit and get it to work. =)

#1 Speedball blades

I think I posted this somewhere else, but thought I should share it again. I generally use speedball blades exclusively, and played around with a #1 blade to get really thin lines. After several tries I was able to squeeze a blade down by inserting a knife blade in the groove of a number 1 and adjusting some vise grips to gently squeeze it down without crushing it. I went through a few without using the knife blade and that did not work. I'm not sure how it works on anything but PZ Kut.

I don't know what gauge they are, but I did pick up a small supply of needles, but I haven't had much luck carving anything with them. Feels too much like an X-acto knife--which I was never very good with in the first place. I like the carving tools that scoop material out rather than just slice it in ways that require multiple cuts to get the material out.

I haven't tried shaping those #1 nibs into smaller cutting pieces and giving that a try, but it is on my to-do list!

But to make a long story short--if you're doing something wrong, so am I! =)

I'm late chiming in on this BUT here's how we solved this problem. Pupp and I do a lot of joint projects. We have 3 or 4 series out now that we each carved pieces of the series or she carved the stamps but I did the log books, etc. Those we both go out and plant together and we write the clues together. All of these we list under a team name. That way people know it's both of us.

I actually found several places that I thought would make great hiding places while we were there last week. Unfortunately I had heard it was impossible to hide a box at Disneyland so I didn't even take my supplies with me. If I'd had a microbox with me, Tom Sawyers Island would have had one before I left :)

Your boxes were doing great. There had been some new boxers, a group of about 8 who did not have stemps, that had visited your boxes. They had taken very good care of them and rehidden them very well.

I know that ScoutDogs uses needles. She did the traveling event stamp of the LbNA map which has very tiny details. She has something about it on her web site:

http://www.scoutdogsboxes.com/shopping_page.html

She just says she uses the needle as a "very tiny knife". I imagine you could only use this effectively on good rubber, like PZ Kut, and while using a magnifying glass.

Fortunately I have intensely magnifying eyes without my glasses on. I can read microtype on a dollar bill. I just need a good light source. But that doesn't mean I have the skill of the patience for that kind of photographic quality carving.

I found the needles I had didn't seem very sharp. Not sure if it was the needles, or the carving medium, or just me. I'm just glad I'm not one of the animals who has to have these things jabbed into them. Seems like it'd be like getting an injection with a stick sharpened by a Boy Scout with a penknife!

I keep a small whet stone in my carving kit, and always sharpen blades prior and during carving. I don't use needles but that should work for them as well.
