Smaller New Year's parts: About A Boy and Bridget Jones's Diary

This is harder than I thought it would be to come up with these. I also think of Catch Me if You Can even though I don't think New Year's plays any part. I went to see it one Eve and it was longer than I expected and got out after midnight. Walked out of the theater, looked at my watch and said, "Oh. Happy New Year."

Not a really great holiday, is it?

You're kidding. It was not too long before New Year's last year. That's why he couldn't do the show last year, and Regis Philbin filled in.

We did at last get one for Mystery Girl - we picked up a twin pack, "The Haunted Carousel" and "Danger on Deception Island". Yesterday was our first time to sit down with them. Mystery Girl loved it - she caught on to the way the game worked very quickly, and spent a couple of hours at it. It is hard though! I was very impressed, one of the puzzles she had to solve was to fix a circuit panel using the correct resistors in series!

I imagine it will be many hours of fun for us. Thanks Princess Lea for your "expert advice" - they did a great job with Nancy!

There really are no motels near both events, but the best choice is the Best Western in Tully, NY. It is equal distance ( 12 miles) from both events, and although I originally thought there were no rooms available ( website glitch)....they actually have plenty of rooms there. I am trying to negotiate a group discount, so if you book a room, tell them you are with the letterboxing group at Highland Forest. Their number is....

Best Western - Tully 866-696-6061.

This really is the best spot if you want to be close to both events. There are plenty more places in the Syracuse area...in every price range.

I have some ammo boxes that I've had for a while and can find them just about everywhere but as others have said they are a bit big for most hiding places and they would just turn to a ball of rust underwater.I don't have a GOOD army surplus store near me but I'm still looking for the decon boxes.

I'm so glad that Mystery Girl likes the games (with a name like that, how can she go wrong?) My daughter and I just finished Deception Island yesterday! There is a part when Nancy goes to a beach and finds a hidden box (in the shape of a clam) with some clues in it. She later refers to it as a geocache! But she just took the clues and did not exchange them for a McDonald's Happy Kids toy or anything, so I think she broke the geocaching rules. It would be funny to see if someone on the staff at Her Interactive is a geocacher - they are located up in the Seattle area, so maybe Amanda can convince them to come over to letterboxing instead.

I'm not sure the Decon boxes would work under water. They have really good snap lids, but I have found that some finders don't snap the lid down and check that it is fully snapped. Sometimes you have to snap it down in 3 different places. They are a good size and great color though.

Yes, we got back from the movies just in time for his first appearance. He did the countdown, and then he appeared to announce some of the acts from California every now and then. His speech was slurred, but he did pretty darned well, all things considered, I thought.

I truly had no idea. I can't even remember where I was last year for New Years Eve. I certainly wasn't paying attention to Regis. --I just looked it up and I was working on New Years Eve. Inflight from Seattle to Philly at midnight, so definitely not watching TV.

Oh well, at least he didn't die or anything. I hate it when I find out that someone I thought was alive and well has been dead for a couple of years!

I thought it was very touching and inspiring that Dick Clark had worked on his rehabilitation so much to be able to come out and perform this year. Awesome!

Bundle of Joy with Debbie Reynolds too. I think that one has New Years Eve scenes. It's from the 50's.

How could I forget the Apartment and Bridget Jones' Diary! Thanks you guys!

If you created an event stamp, you first need to list it on Atlas Quest just like any other plant that needs to be listed. Once you've listed it, you'll be able to add it to the event or events that it attends. If you're the organizer of an event, you'll be able to add any listed event stamp on AQ as having attended the event.

To list a box at an event, open up that box's info, then towards the bottom of that page, there's a 'Events Attended' box...click on 'Add Event', and type in the event's name.

However, you also want to check with the Event organizer to make sure that event stamps are allowed at that event...Lock Wench as asked, for example, that for Desperately Seeking Sun, there be no event stamps other than the event's own stamp. All event stamps are however welcome at Desperately Seeking Suds.

MAJOR MELTDOWN !!

Just to let all of AQ and the letterboxing world know...

My computer had a major meltdown yesterday!!
Nothing worked. Nothing had files or programs associated with them. Windows would not finish a repair because the only form of the professional service pack 1 need to finish was not on a CD but on a floppy...and...well, long story....long aweful story!!

anyway, my computer is still not working properly but I can get online briefly. I plan to work for the next couple of days moving pics and documents onto disks for storage. Then, I honestly think I am gonna have to wipe windows out and start fresh. Right now there are 2 seperate instances of windows on the computer. That was the only way to get on an d retrieve my priceless photos etc.

please say a little computer prayer for me :0) If I loose my pictures I am gonna flip my lid !!

well, anyway...I have LB obligations so if my computer fails to let me online I will do all i can to make trips to the university library to keep up and keep in touch.

DixieKin

ps. to those brainy computer people out there...

any ideas about how to fix my dilemna of 2 OS etc??
everytime i boot i get a screen with a choice of which OS to use...both choices are of Windows XP Professional but one is the old one that lost all it's file associations etc. and one is the new one that looks fresh and new but looks can be deceiving i think. I think it is not running properly and of course files are getting mixed up...not too mention there is almost no free space compared to what it should be.
YUCK!!

Hostels

How do most people handle hitchhiker hostels? I get the impression some people, at least, stamp into all the hitchhikers in a hostel when they find it. Is that usual? The other day, before noticing that, I found my first hostel, and I only stamped into the hostel log and that of the HH I took with me. I'm not sure it even occurred to me to do otherwise, but if it did I wouldn't have; dealing with four logs (the hostel, my personal, the HH I took, and the HH I left) and five stamps (ditto, plus my son's) was time consuming and confusing enough for me. Then too, it strikes me as a bit declassé to do that -- I didn't feel as if I'd done anything to EARN that many stamps. But maybe I'm off base. What do you do?

Well, I've only found one, but it had some great hitchhikers by Mumma and Bunny Boy and Cape Cod Letterboxer and I really wanted the images. I stamped all of them in my logbook but didn't stamp in their logs except the one I took and the hostel log.

I didn't really think I was technically supposed to stamp the other HHs in my log, but I figured I'd never see them again and I wanted the images. I was surprised to discover that a bunch of people had logged into the HH I took even though it had never left the hostel.

So, in short, I don't think it matters either way.

I have also only found one Hostel (however, I have just planted my own first one), but I don't have any problems with stamping into all the HH's in it when I do. After all, they're placed in the box, just as a normal HH is...and it is indeed still a normal letterbox...

I figure, though, as long as you exchange at least one HH (or in my case, usually several), why shouldn't you be allowed to stamp into them? After all, you did find them!

As for my own Hostel...I don't mind if all who visit stamp into all the HH's...but I do seriously want people to bring their own HH's to change it up, and PLEASE, people, when you do, take the ones that have been their the longest out FIRST!

What did Y'all do today??

I had intended to do some LB maintenance today in neighboring Swain County and go see my granny but Katie Jo (Kjo is her AQ trail name) was very sick with a stomach bug or something.

anyway...

I was always told ya shouldn't sweep on New's Years DAY (nyD) cause whatcha do on that day is what ya will do all year.

Then...there's the other way I heard it growing up... You sweep the house New Year's Eve (nyE) and if you can...you toss out your old broom and get a new on for the new year. If you can't toss it out, ya beat it or rinse it clean. This way...you are sweeping away old problems or troubles and starting fresh...but again, don't sweep nyD.

:0)

then of course...ya can never find a can or bundle of fresh Collard Greens around here on nyD. You must eat Collards, Black Eyed Peas and Jowls on nyD. and forgive me but I can not remember for the life of me which one brings what good fortune with it but each one brings something. One is luck...I think that's the beans. One is MONEY...I think that's the collard greens (hence the reason you can NEVER find them if you wait till nyD to shop for them) and I think the jowls bring health...(seems unlikely since it's like bacon)??? If anyone remembers please chime in!!

I spent some time cooking the above menu and I ingested many greens ;->
but ya know what...I forgot and I swept the floors this morning. Arghhh!! Well with the new wood stove as heat this year I WILL be sweeping more :-) See, maybe there is something to all that stuff.

LOL

what did y'all do?? are these traditions just regional for my area or anyone else do them?? I always figured it was a southern thang but I'm not sure!!

What can you expect? Well, another 19 of those 'Fear, Itself' phobia HH's...at least, I may add more as I come up wtih more designs for more phobias. Also, more HH's based on the webcomics I read...probably around another 15 or so of those. The rest are random ideas I've had. :D

Ok then! Happy New Years! And what a great way to start it off, completing one of my goals! :D

They are all listed (in mailing order) on the Sweet Treats ring page (http://www.atlasquest.com/lboxes/postalring/showinfo.html?gRingId=6).

Take a look at the chart on this whopper ring! :D Can't wait to fill it all in! :P

Ryan...by the way, you might want to take a look at the way the chart expands to the right as it grows larger than the screen...it seems (to me at least) that the purple bar/sidelines bleed through a bit. You can still see all the info and all, but I thought i'd point it out.

I am impatiently waiting for the ring to start....only 3 more days! ;)

CQ, I think you should be happy if people just bring in new HH's. I don't think it's realistic to ask people to take the oldest residing hitchhikers first. First of all, there's really no way of knowing how long one has been in there unless everyone logs a date when they sign in. Secondly, some HH's just don't appeal to some people...they are too large for them to hide again, or it's a HH from their area and they are trying to "mix it up a little", etc. Or Sometimes a certain image will just appeal to me. So just be happy if they keep bringing in HH's. They'll move, believe me.

Well, I'm VERY familiar with the greens/black-eyed peas! But then again, I'm in NC too! hehe Another tradition is that you never NEVER go to a cemetery on NYD. You will attend funerals all year. And who wants that? (In other words, LB in parks on NYD!)
