COMMIT Containers

Someone asked about these extremely watertight containers (so much in fact, that a box of mine in VT was found floating in a nearby fountain - stamp had been lifted, but logbook remained perfectly dry!)

These are pseudo microbox size containers - about the same diameter as a film container, but being 4 inches in height.

Hinged snap lid with a thumb lock on it does the trick!

The best thing about these guys are that they are recycled, being originally a container from the COMMIT lozenges, an aid to quit smoking.

I have several laying about - if you would be interested in trying one, AQmail me.

peace,
lorax

... if you can leave them alone.

Mom! Someone dumped out my crayons on the floor again! I know they were in that plastic box when I went to bed last night...

It's doing great for us. We even tried scratching it after it had cured for a few days - held up great. We've only used lock n locks - so I don't know if that makes the difference. We've liked it much better than tape - no shine and it just makes the boxes look cool (we use a camo stencil and 2 or 3 colors)
Ink?

What is the best technique to use when using black ink? I don't want to worry about messing other people's stamps up. Should I worry, or will it dry by the time someone else uses their ink on it?

Well, if you're wearing your letterboxing pants, just rub it gently on the pants just above the knee. Which is why most of my jeans have a multi-colored patch above the right knee. Or you could just take a paper towel with you but what would be the fun in that?

Depending on the length of time between finders, and on how wet the ink is, it can carry to the next finder. You might want to carry a ziplock bag with a damp paper towel to clean the stamp when you're finished.

I use baby wipes to clean the stamp after me, no matter what color I stamp in with...I get unscented ones without alcohol, so there's no residue left on the stamp and no alcohol to dry the rubber out. the only time I don't clean the stamp is if it came colored and I use the same colors on it...then I leave the ink on it to show the next boxer where to color. of course, when you stamp in only black, that wouldn't apply.

How considerate. I wish all the people down here that insist on coloring every stamp bright blue, black or purple were worried about how it affects/ruins the markers/images of everyone after them.

Wow I thought I was the only one with pants like that. I feel better knowing I'm not alone with the colorful patches. :)

Wow, Judith and HG, it looks like we tend to dress alike when LBing! My knee patch is growing in noticeability! My kids call me a dork and fuss at me because I always told them NOT to use their sleeves when wiping their mouths. They are 22 and 18 so should not be doing that anymore ... so, why do they even remember? Sheesh! But, you know what... when they go with me to LB, they find their knees better places to gently clean the stamps than the alcohol free wipes I also take.

My multi-colored patch is usually on the inside of my ankle!

My friends and I just found Yaquina Lighthouses this weekend, by Green Tortuga (yeah, ok, Ryan, I haven't logged yet, but I will with responses to you!)

The stamps had a little part that is perfect for yellow, in fact that is how GT had stamped it on the logbook.

However, someone before us had stamped the whole thing in blue. Hey, it happens, it may be the only stamp pad you have and you might not have anything to clean it afterward.

We didn't notice and when Yiker started to color in with her pens, the yellow part turned green.

A little water, a little rubbing on my jeans, and we got it yellow again.

Like I said, I don't place any blame on the person before us. But ink from before does affect the next LBer, even after many days.

Clean when you can. The next boxer will thank you!

See, the difference is I DO place blame.

A basic pack of 8 colors at least is not expensive. It's not that hard to color stamps when they should be colored.

And if you just can't bring yourself to do that then at least have the courtesy to go out prepared to clean up your own mess.

After struggling to keep my watercolor markers in line while on the trail I made this simple cloth roll case for them. I thought other people might find this useful, so here is a photo album with instructions for how to make the case. This project takes about an hour start to finish and can be made from an old pillowcase.

Film Canisters

Having been disappointed with Kodak film canisters (the black ones with the gray tops), they always seem to be wet inside, I began a switch to Fuji film canisters (all white with a knurled edge on the top) because they seemed to snap shut ever so much better. I tried one immersed in water for a few hours and it remained dry.

I am the adoptive owner of a couple of geocache series that involve film canisters. A few weeks back, I replaced one stage in entirety because the log book was too soaked to open. I installed a new Fuji film canister, wrapped with camo tape and then painted (can't really get the tape to stick well on the top), with a new log book inside.

Yesterday I got a report that the log book is soaked. Aaaaaargh.

I'm gonna try a small prescription pill bottle next.

Just got a HH in a postal this week. It was in a small paint container with a screw top -- great idea. So tiny, so it's great for a HH. Would be perfect for a cootie, too (which I need to start thinking about for the NEO Fall meet up).

Speaking of Marvy's has anyone had trouble with the caps on the end and the brush tips falling off? I'm thinking it's because I keep them in the trunk and it got hot, but I'm gonna have to buy some more, because everytime I use one, I get Marvy pieces all over the place.

Wonderful! I remember someone posting that they had purchased a similar product. But, since i like to sew...this is a great idea. I didn't even think of doing one myself. Thank you, thank! Now I can used up some of extra material I've got laying around.

Quote Lately I've been having very good results by first spraying a box with a Plastic Adhesion Promoter. Look for it in the paint section of an auto parts store.

Yesterday I visited an Auto Zone and bought a spray can of Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter. For those looking, it's got a maroon label and a clear plastic top.

Today I used it. It's worth reading the directions closely. You're only supposed to wait 2-3 minutes between coats, and you must apply the color coat within ten minutes of the last primer coat. Now, the way I generally paint containers is to paint one end and set it down with that end up to dry, then come back and paint the other end and set it down on the dry end to dry. With these time constraints, I don't even venture back into the house -- paint with Adhesion Promoter, wait three minutes, paint again with Adhesion Promoter, wait three minutes, paint with camo paint, wait five or six minutes (hope you didn't apply it too thick!), paint again with camo paint.

Obviously I cannot report yet on how well it hold up in the wild. However, I'd have to say my initial impression is quite favorable. One of the things I painted was a transparent plastic jar, and after applying the Adhesion Promoter it looked like an ice cube, all foggy. I dunno if that was just the color of the clear primer or whether it was actually dissolving into the surface of the plastic, but if it's the latter the stuff will probably work really well.

Of course, clear plastic jars have never been the problem. It's the yellow plastic lids of those jars where the paint usually flakes right off leaving the bright yellow screaming "Hey! Over here! There's something hidden over here!"

I used a small pill bottle/container for a letterbox I planted in July. It has been found several times already and had all good reports.

I was thinking about using the smallest Play Doh container for a letterbox. 1.5 X 2 inches. I think it would be airtight. Not sure if the plastic would hold up to the elements and the containers are bright yellow.

Someone may not have put the logboog all the way down which would cause it to leak. There has been 1 pill bottle we have found and it was soaked to the bone.
As far as the playdough cantainer try painting it with plastic paint or camo tape.
Just food for thought1

Beautifully done! :o)

We picked up a paint brush holder from AC Moore. It does the trick, but yours is SO much nicer!!!
You should be proud. Thanks for posting the instructions for others. Apparently I need to learn how to sew better.

Instructions? You mean you want us to make our own? Now I'd be willing to trade some handmade little logbooks for one. But seriously, you want us to make our own!

All kidding aside, this is a neat idea. If I had a sewing machine, I'd give it a try.

Quote After struggling to keep my watercolor markers in line

This reminded me of a question I have been meaning to ask.

Why these fancy markers and not colored pencils? Is it just a matter of aesthetics, to go with the stamp ink, or is there a reason not to use colored pencils in my logbook? I have been playing around with coloring with pencils, but I suspect that my wife may have some of these fancy markers around...

These markers you use to color on the stamp itself and then transfer it to the logbook. It's like using an inkpad, but you can use several colors on one stamp instead of a solod color stamp. The Marvy markers are actually ink markers.

Ahh, yeah, I have seen that done. I got so caught up worrying that I might be doing something wrong that the obvious reason of why people use markers escaped me.
