I think I was going to go with just the plain version. No narration, as it came out in the theater. Is this bad?

No narration, as it came out in the theater

The original 1982 release included the voiceover by Deckard to mimic the Humphrey Bogart film noir style. The subsequent versions either eliminated it completely or were heavily edited.

Since I’ve seen the original well over 50 times, I hear the voiceover in my head whether it is present or not.

Well it was 1978! Things were different. But I do like the dark noir/foggy vibe the city has. And I really enjoyed Goldblum and Sutherland in this version of Body Snatchers.

It’s 1978. That was realistic in 1978.

Released in 1984 comes . . . Blade Runner.

The premise is as follows:

Set in future but in our current past, November of 2019, the world is a very dark, dark place. But technology is so advanced that they have created robots that resemble humans in every way except emotions.

The robots were created to do slave labor in the outer planets and colonies.

However, and to use a term from another deary futurist 1980's movie, the robots go "self aware" and revolt. As a result, these human-like robots are illegal and a special unit of cops called "Blade Runners" are in charge of hunting down these robots and "retiring them".

The problem is the company that made them continued to make them and people continued to use them. As a result, a group of these robots revolted again, killing several humans on their return to Earth.

That's when the cops call retired Blade Runner, Rick Deckard.

Despite his initial protests, Deckard agrees to take on the task and as such begins his own journey as to his own self-awareness.

Having said enough, on to my Kitty Paws:

One Kitty Paw for Rutger Hauer. Another odd character played exceptionally well. I don't believe there are a lot of Hollywood stars that could out do Harrison Ford, but Rutger does it with such simplicity.

One Kitty Paw for Harrison Ford, our "sci-fi cop noir". He plays the lonely but conflicted detective with ease.

One Kitty Paw for the outstanding sets. You almost can't breathe with such stoney and grim settings. The designer covered every little detail right down the rivets of the ledge Deckard is about to die from.

A Half of a Kitty Paws for the supporting cast. Everyone delivers and there is no shortage of imagery with them.

A Half of a Kitty Paw because after nearly 40 years later, the movie holds up.

My only complaint, if you will, is that it is a bit slow. A slightly faster pace would've been better. No minus kitty paws.

So, at 4 Kitty Paws I recommend this movie. This movie would do well with your favorite foods before they become obsolete by November 2019 on a dark stormy Friday night.

Okay, next up from the jar is . . . Somewhere in Time.

Somewhere in Time was filmed on Mackinac Island at the Grand Hotel, a place well worth a visit. When I think of Christopher Reeve in this movie, I can't help but think of him before his was paralyzed - somewhere in time - & preserved in the movie.

Released in 1980 comes . . . Somewhere in Time.

The premise is as a follows:

During a successful play run, an elderly woman approaches the writer and hands him a pocket watch, whispering the words, “come back to me”.

She then walks away, leaving the playwriter stunned.

Unbeknownst to the playwriter, the elderly lady heads back to the Grand Hotel and dies.

Eight years later, after massive success writing plays, the play writer is suffering from writer’s block. Facing a deadline he can’t reach, he decides to go out on a little vacation.

During his unplanned drive, he spots the Grand Hotel and decides to stay there. While there he happens upon a portrait of a famous actress from 1912 and becomes completely obsessed with her.

Then just when everything seems impossible he learns of a way to travel back in time, to 1912 to meet her.

And just as it had happened in the past, he finds her again.

Having said more than enough, on to my Kitty Paws.

One Kitty Paw for Christopher Reeves. The man is all energy. And he’s gorgeous. And he’s so frail at the same time.

One Kitty Paw for Jane Seymour. I am not a huge fan of hers but she does well here and she is stunning.

One Kitty Paw for the sets and costumes. The Grand Hotel is just stunning and the costumes are up to par, despite the running joke regarding Reeves’ suit.

But I don’t know how to feel about this movie.

SPOILERS

SPOILERS

COME GET YOUR SPOILERS RIGHT HERE

He literally runs around for more than half the movie, trying to get to the girl and then he gets like a day and a half. JUST A DAY AND A HALF.

That is just crap ya’ll.

He is SUPERMAN. He deserved better.

I feel he was cheated. I feel I was cheated. I just feel like this chick had SUPERMAN breathing down her back and she was like, “no, no”.

GURL, do you know who that gorgeous man is??????!!!!

AUGHGHGHGGH

Anyhoooo . . . that’s all I am going to say about that. Except that the natural Kitty order of things goes like this:

Paul Newman
Christopher Reeves/Tom Hardy
Robert Redford
Pedro Pascal

He is number two guys, gals, future ghosts.

NUMBER 2.

I.
Just.
Caint.

Anyways . . . next up from the jar is . . . The Sting.

This is one of those movies that I always tell my hubby falls into the category of "could only watch this maybe once every 20 years." HUGE. UGLY. CRYING. "Don't look at me, I'm hideous!"

I am a super sentimental sap though.

Other, only once every 20 years movies (because of heavy crying and emotional toll) = Beaches, The Prince of Tides

I really like Jane Seymour, she is an amazing villain in the made for TV mini series East of Eden with Bruce Boxleitner AND I love her in her most recent TV outing, Harry Wild where she plays detective. Jane Seymour even named one of her children Kristopher after Christopher Reeve. Plus she is an artist and has participated in episodes of Britain's Celebrity Painting Challenge. And Christopher Reeve is just so gorgeous Somewhere in Time was his second big movie right after he had done Superman. If you have not seen him in Death Trap, you need to do that right away.... And he had a fun guest appearance on the Muppet Show https://youtu.be/amucuVJABXM?si=FRlh6-rIt19tLKw9

To go back in time and see The Sting again for the first time. ahhh It is an almost perfect movie in my opinion. From the music, to the story, to the acting- It is entertaining as all get out. I loved it as a kid when it came out in 1973, I loved it yesterday when I watched it again, I loved it analyzing it scene by scene in film school.

I am in Michigan and like time travel related media. Unfortunately, I did not particularly care for this movie. It has been over a decade since my viewing of the film, but the ending seems to be what disappointed me with the film. I have not read Bid Time Return (the book the movie is based on).

With that said, I have learned more about the film in the last several years. There is a published book called Memoirs of Elise that came out in the late nineties that is a prequel or sequel to Somewhere in Time the film. The book is out-of-print now. One of the libraries I work for happens to have a copy.

Another book was recently published, a work of fiction, that is set during the filming of Somewhere in Time on Mackinac Island. That book is called Somewhere in Crime.

The movie has lots of fans because they have Somewhere in Time conventions on Mackinac Island yearly in October. Jane Seymour occasionally makes an appearance at them.

Maybe a new viewing of Somewhere in Time in order. Although given the long list of movies that I would like to watch... maybe not.

Released in 1973 come . . . The Sting.

The premise is as follows:

After pulling a small time con job on the worse possible mark, con artists Johnny Hooker and his pals Luther and Erie Kid learn the hard way of their mistake. They stole from crime boss Doyle Lonnegan.

After finding Luther dead, Johnny Hooker reaches out to a friend of Luther’s to “even the score.”

Together, Johnny works with Henry Gondorff and plenty others to play the long con and gets the sting on Lonnegan, that is if they don’t betray one another first.

Having said that enough, on to my Kitty Paws:

One Paw for hottie Paul Newman. Awehhhhh

One Paw for Robert Redford. He’s doing an awful lot of running, which is funny to this kitty.

One Kitty Paw for the supporting cast . . . Before he gets eaten by a really big fish, Robert Shaw plays the hard mobster well. And the father of the future Sith Lord Anankin (mystery solved) does his best.

A half of a Kitty Paw for the sets and costumes.

My only complaint is that this movie is tinge long. Other than that, if you have a rainy day Sunday, I recommend this movie with your favorite movie candy, popcorn and pop.

Okay, next up from the jar is . . . The Wrong Man.

Released in 1959 comes Hitchcock’s . . . The Wrong Man.

The premise is as follows:

While trying to get a loan for his wife’s dental needs, Christopher “Manny” Balestrero gets spotted as a man who had robbed the insurance company just a few months prior.

The police pick him up and take him get to the various stores the thief has already robbed.
Saddly because of writing error and some questionable/shotty police work, Manny gets arrested.

His arrest then leads to the downfall of his wife’s mental stability and while you know the out-come, it’s still very tragic.

Having said enough, on to my Kitty Paws:

One and a Half Kitty Paws For Henry Fonda. The man is tall and slim but this movie just makes him so small and meek. He kept saying that he had to call his wife and I just felt so bad for him, I started crying.

One Kitty Paw for Vera Miles, the actress who played his wife. She just checks out and it’s scary.

One Kitty Paw for Hitchcock’s direction. He has some powerful camera shots that just move you. The prison door scene, the courtroom scene where no one cares, the sergeant’s desk scene . . . just some good ole fashion Hitchcock.

So at 3.5 Kitty Paws I do recommend this movie on a rainy Sunday. This movie would do well with your favorite comfort foods.

Okay, our last movie from the jar is . . . The Innocents.

The review is late because the Niners Won yesterday.

Released in 1961 comes . . . The Innocents.

The premise is as follows:

Miss Gibbins has applied to be a governess for a pair of children in England. However, because Miles, the eldest child is away at school, she only has to care for Little Flora. As such, she is given full free reign of the child and house as their uncle and guardian is "selfish".

Excited for her new position, she quickly becomes aware of strange and uncomfortable presences in the house. Then she slowly but surely becomes aware of the fate of the previous governess.

And the presences become stronger with the unexpected and abrupt arrival of Miles, having been expelled from school.

Now suddenly, Miss Gibbins is dealing with a very uncomfortable scenario, indeed.

Having said more than enough, on to my Kitty Paws:

So this is clearly the movie that the show The Haunting of Bly Manor is based on. I didn't care for Bly Manor as I felt it went on way too long but by comparison, I liked the explanation of things better . . . but still not a fan.

Either way, I felt Debroh Kerr did fine and there were some great spook-esque moments but overall, this movie just creeped me out in a bad way.

And then the ending.

I kinda just sat there wondering what the hell did I just watch.

So, I can't recommend this movie.

So, I am just going to do it!

For the month of April, the movie-thon theme is Wes Anderson Films.

By my count, there are 4 Wednesdays and 4 Sundays, giving a total of 8 movies. The movies will all be put in the jar and randomly selected.

As for the CONTEST!!!!

After all 8 movies have been reviewed, 24 TRIVIA Questions will be posted, 3 questions per movie and the first person to answer all correctly WINS!

What's the prize????

Well, I am torn. Should I wait to see what the winner's favorite Wes Anderson's favorite movie is or should I just put together a Wes Anderson care package?

I think I will call a vote the last week of March.

Eitherway, there you have it. Wes Anderson is on the horizon! The April Horizon!
