Get us a condo right on Waikiki Beach within walking distance of the zoo and Diamondhead. Of course I'm a walker and a hiker so I think everything is within walking distance.

THen you don't need to rent a car! If you want to go somewhere and you don't want to walk, the Bus will take you all around the island....you may know that because you may have been there before, but just in case-since you have a place in Waikiki and the traffic is so crazy in the Hon/Waikiki area, it's better NOT to have a car, so we have been told-but we stay on the leeward side near Kapolei and rent a car so we can get to places away from the city life...we get enough of that being from the Chicago area! When are you going? We won't be back again until 2018.

Where will you be in Hawaii and for how long? Frequency of letterboxes varies by island.

I was there May of last year and met 2 of the 3 boxers that lived there. One has moved to the mainland, and the other 2 don’t participate much anymore, say about zero. But, I did plant at Waikiki Beach, maybe you could check on it.

Hey....why did you change your name? How are you doing?
Meeting up would have been great but my family is in the process of moving to Maui.....so that will be my new stomping grounds for Hawaii visits.

Sue and I are cruising HI with 10 other letterboxers May 5 to 12. After that, we’ll be on Oahu for over a week with two other boxers, TsukiAmes Ames and Jai. We’d love to meet somewhere for coffee, lunch or a meal with any local letterboxers.

Let us know if you’re available from Sunday, May 13 to Sunday, May 20.
Thanks,

Mark Pepe

I heard there is a volcano eruption due and you should be ready to move quickly. Did not catch which island . . . but I suggest you turn on the news!
Meanwhile it is 93 degrees back here in DE and no coastal breeze~
Stay safe and box on.

Hello from the East Coast! I will be in Honolulu on November 12th & 13th. I have scouted out a few boxes online, but would also like to exchange a couple of HH at a hostel. Does anyone know of an active hostel within 20 miles of Honolulu?
Thanks, A Okay

I’m coming to Hawaii for the first time and would love to get at least 1 stamp( quest for 1 from each state). Problem is I’m on a cruise ship- Norwegian- but we dock on all 4 main islands. Any suggestions? Walking would be ok, but open to taxi/bus to get there.

You might get to plant, finding any planted boxes may be doubtful. I was on the island of Oahu for 10 days and got 2 off of Ford Island. The reason I was able to get on was because the only boxer on Oahu, at the time, had excess and we went. Good luck

Since you will dock on all 4 main islands I would just do an Advanced Search of active boxes in Hawaii and going by the location of each box, figure out which ones would be feasible for you to do. Or not. There seem to be quite a few active boxes that have been found recently.

We will be heading here very soon and I noticed there are a handful of boxes available. Are there any boxers in the area that may want to meet up and exchange?

I won't say there are no boxers living in Hawai'i, but it is only a handful and they statistically are more likely to live on Oahu than Kaua'i. And they are not an active bunch.

Most every box planted on any of the islands were planted by tourists like yourself.

I would encourage you to find several Hawaiian boxes before you plant one yourself as the environment is very different.

Hi! I'm going to be traveling to Oahu in September and traveling with two friends who will indulge me for a box or two so I can mark boxing in Hawaii off my bucket list. I search Waikiki area because we are staying there but do you have any must do boxes or a must see place with a box that you would recommend? We will have a rental car so I am open to any cool places that I can drag my non-boxing friends that they might enjoy as well.

Please remember if you locate any boxes, DO NOT remove lava walls and/ or enter sacred places or formations.

Hi,

We went in February and the two we were able to do was at the Dole Plantation and the Polynesian Cultural Center. There were others, but could not get to them because we did excursions via buses.

Hope this helps and have fun =)

I was back on Oahu in October and checked my plants there(I live on the mainland), and all seemed well. The island is SUPER-landscaped and muggly in the urban areas so box life there is challenging, but some have managed to stay around...you can run a search and see what's been found most recently.
In our travels to the island, we enjoy going up to Haliewa, beach-hopping along the North Shore, and we also like going to the Kailua area and to the Makapu'u point lighthouse. If you have a rental car, you can get there, or you can take the bus. This last trip, we took a bus tour of the Kualoa Ranch and got a fairly new box there...that was a fun tour-a little cheesy, but still cool! The Japanese Temple is also a nice stop-but the boxes planted there have disappeared at my last inquiry. Plan in advance, map out the length/time of your excursions, and you can squeeze in what you'd like to see/do! Enjoy!

We were there in November, and it was amazing! The Pali Lookout is a must-see, and we managed to dig-up the "Warrior's Helmet." The Polynesian Center should not be missed either, and there is a letterbox hidden outside the grounds. Watch out for security.
Be sure to stop at Seven Brothers for some amazing shrimp and shave ice next door! Have a lovely trip. :)

I have 3 there myself. My favorite is I Pity The Fool . . . it's at a nice overlook! I also have a "mystery" one too . . . pretty easy to solve.

But yes, have a lovely time!

Woodworking info to locals

I also do woodworking as a hobby as well as letterboxing. I am having a difficult time trying to get a small piece of Kukui/Candlenut wood and was wondering if anyone in the state knows someone who has a tree on their property that fell or downed trees or can procure a 3-4 diameter, 7 inch piece of wood? I will pay for shipping, but i even had people travel there and couldn't get any. Does anyone know where to get a piece?
Any information from locals would be helpful. Thanks!
