I don't touch my phone at work, if I can help it, at all. Being a personal trainer, people are paying me *very* well to give them my undivided attention. This doesn't bother me at all, and I carry a flip phone, because it does what I need it to do, and is really easy to ignore.

They really don't care... part of the problem is that the few that it is impacting their productivity the leaders don't talk to - so instead everyone gets treated like 6 year-olds

I don't touch mine either - like I mentioned - I hate phones and only carry it as I have kids that might need to reach me...

Do you have cell phone policies at work?

We are allowed to use phones at work. How else would we keep up with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube, Netflix, Atlas Quest, and Trekkie Gal's Survivor Pool Updates? Silly...

Because of the confidentiality agreement we have with our clients, cell phones must be off and out of sight at all times in our rooms (think classroom-like setting)

That said, we tend to be relaxed about people having phones on vibrate, particularly during the evening shift as the main desk is not always manned, as long as they are not taking them out in the rooms.

Studies have shown that workers are more productive if they are able to take a few minutes every hour to check their phones or chat with a coworker.

I bet someone who really likes their phone did that study. *nodding* =)

It's not a big problem for me. My employer is pretty lax about how or when I use my phone, and I often leave it off for days at a time.

I find stuff like that distracting anyhow. I don't leave email programs running in the background so I don't get that distracting "You have mail!" beep. Most of my email addresses I only check once per day. And ringing phones (which are usually just telemarketers anyhow) or text messages are also distracting when I'm concentrating deeply on my work. Leave me alone!

I'll read email, check voice mail and text messages when I'm bored with nothing better to do. =) Actually, the voice mail and text messages I typically only find when I have to turn on my phone to call or text someone and--oh, look at that! I have messages!

Our industry has multiple issues with cell phones, etc. The biggest one is carrying contamination into the Controlled Production Environments. Phones (can) touch the face and mouth and, therefore, become fomites for carrying germs. Some of those germs might not be sterilized off of the devices we make for doctors to use in the human brain......BAD SCENARIO there.

Second issue is distraction, US Federal (and international laws) have very specific requirements for focusing on the tasks at hand; since conversations can carry the possibility of distraction, we've had to put a zero tolerance policy in place for all production support areas.

We've got people bypassing these policies but maintaining they can turn on their phones without touching them but we've countered with the distraction issue. People get one warning and then terminated for cause.

New technology forces us to revisit this area routinely, but it's never easy.

New word

I love obscure, seldom used words......but I love seriously multi-syllabic words even more. Our engineering staff know that if they can work any of these into their investigations or reports, I give bonus points!!

That is excellent. Here's mine for the week (not English, obvs):

mamihlapinatapai

defined as that moment when you hear a clunk, but don't know if it's a box or a tree root resonating in a hollow spot -- holy anticipatory not-knowing.

or not.

Today I told my students I had developed a new term of affection for them: fomites

As Holling suspected in The Wednesday Wars, it's a "teacher trick to get you to look up the word."

Not quite the same thing but I was a science major in college and a couple of us played a game where in EVERY paper we wrote, we inserted the made up but biochem sounding word "postlyptic".

In three years, I got it circled on a paper one time with a couple of question marks beside it.

My job performance is based on my UPH (units per hour) numbers. If the person in the aisle ahead of me doesn't have the same work ethic I do and is on the phone, get off the production floor and play with your phone all you want. Don't screw up my chances of getting rehired next season.

I spend all my time as a teacher policing the cell phones and telling students to get off of them and put them away. ;)

I myself am not super attached to my phone, I turn it off or to vibrate and forget to turn it back, most of the time.

SWMBO is retired now, but where she taught the rules worked this way: If caught with a cell phone or if your cell phone made any noise and interrupted class, the teacher confiscated it. And the student didn't get it back. It was turned over to administration, and the only way they'd part with it is if a parent came in to claim it. You'd be amazed at how many phones they had left at the end of the school year.

Do I detect a note of sarcasm in your use of the words "service animal"?
