Portland OR Dinos unfound!

Hi folks,

I checked the etiquette and this post seems ok... I am just so curious why people have found my plants, but no one in PDX has gone to find multiple of my husband's (L'Aquasox - I'm more active on here).

It's the Drunken Dinos "Series" (not a series but individual themed boxes). We are placing them around and in local breweries. I didn't know if it was somehow offensive to people that we are referencing drinking (though in Portland, I feel like most topics aren't off limits), or if it's just luck that people haven't gone to find them...

Anyway, this post is kind of a PLEASE GO LOOK WE LOVE FINDERS!!/Can anyone point me to problems with our box postings that would prevent people from wanting to go? We are newer to planing (within the last year).

Thanks all! Love this community!

I am no where near Portland, but I’ve been boxing since 2000. I took a look at your plant logbook and here’s what struck me right away:

The majority of the boxes in this series were planted the last week of July. It’s only the first week of October. You need to give it more time. I’ve had boxes out that were unfound for nearly a year. The same goes for the one planted in September.

The only one that has been found - TRex - has a sad face icon next to it. That’s a flag that there is something wrong with your box (wet logbook, cracked case etc). I looked at the find comment on the box and there is no indication of a problem, just the word ‘fun’. When I see a box with that icon, I will search for more active problem free boxes first before even looking at the clues for that particular box. But that’s just me. I would suggest you edit that icon out because it appears to be there in error.

All of the boxes in this series with the exception of the one planted in September - Deinonychus- have the brain mental puzzle icon on it. I can’t do any type of mental puzzle, so I automatically ignore ANY box with that icon (side note - I’m legally blind and must make the most out of my infrequent forays out into the wild, I’m not simply lazy) I took a look at the clues for these boxes, and in my own personal opinion were I the planter, I would not use that icon because even I could figure out your clues, and they were delightful by the way :-)

This is just my one opinion which may or may not reflect the views of others. Also, there is an annual (?) Plant A Beer Day (something like that), a few letterboxing pub crawls, so no worries on the locale of your boxes!

Personally, I do not go out of my way to look for boxes in commercial businesses or libraries unless I know that the staff is aware of the box. I did not look at the clues to your boxes to see if that it the case but it is one thing to consider.

I will go after a box if it is planted outside a business, though.

Most definitely not. A few years back hartwolfzell started Plant a Beer Day to encourage folks to plant at or near a brewery. The event occurs in April and is currently hosted by me and Helms' Flying Adventure.

Can anyone point me to problems with our box postings that would prevent people from wanting to go?

As for me, if I were near Portland, I'd definitely add those boxes to my list to find as I clearly love a good box and beer and also dinosaurs.

Something else to consider, in a place like the PNW, many letterboxers will get their hiking done during the summer when the weather is good and save boxes that are inside or drive-bys for the rainy winter months. Or at least, I do that. :-)

Definitely not due to drinking. Pub crawls have a long standing tradition in boxing in some parts of the country. Boxing overall has slowed down in the Portland area, so I think some people have gotten out of the habit of looking for new boxes. But, they are on my list as soon as the beginning of the school year crazies settle down some!

Amanda has a great point, as does Warrior Woman. I too have boxes out there that are over a year old with no finds.
