I've used it on Windoze (at work) and Linux (at home). I haven't used it on a Macintosh, so I can't help there. Perhaps there is another Mac user here who has tried GIMP.
On the other hand, Linux is ***FREE***. There are many distributions to choose from. I have Ubuntu at home. Another guy at work likes Mint and Peppermint. Get an old computer and try it. If you want to try it without installing it, search for a "Live Linux".
Another option is to dual-boot on your Macintosh. That way, when you start your computer you choose which operating system you want to run.
All options, but it is up to you. I'm thinking that the online option that someone else recommended will work out best for you. It will certainly be the quickest option.

I just use the cheapest mechanical pencils you could ever imagine, and tracing paper. No issues for me.

I don't really need it. I was just curious because you mentioned it.

The problem with the tracing paper was I couldn't see the details through the paper.
