A synopsis can really be a pain. I have two hints. Look at the ones in books like Cliffs Notes. Check out the opening phrases used: Later that evening, Unknown to, Mary explains to, Before John could start to...

The second hint (which it is probably too late for) is: As you are writing the book write a one or two line summery of each chapter. Makes it easy to focus on the most important points.
