Our school district has purchased glasses for all of our students, so when they come to school on Monday, everyone will get a chance to watch the eclipse. How cool is that?

Some of our schools have done that, too, but now they are worried that they got the fake glasses. I hope they can verify they are OK. Otherwise they said they'd have to not use them and still eat the cost. They don't want to chance damaging the kids' eyes. And the kids are pretty disappointed. 8~(

That's awesome. From what I understand, our schools aren't letting anyone outside during the eclipse.

If I had a kid in a school doing that, I'd take them out for the day! *shaking head* What a great educational experience... absolutely wasted.

Put them on and look at a very bright light, like the flashlight on your cell phone. If it appears as a very dim light, the glasses are adequate.

If you can see a flashlight on your cell phone through those glasses, I don't think I'd use them. The sun is vastly brighter than any light or lightbulb. It seems infathomable to me that you could see anything except the sun (or a reflection of the sun off a window or other reflective surface). Even looking directly at a bright lightbulb.... you really shouldn't be seeing anything. These glasses will block 99.9999% of all light. That's like a million times dimmer than the sun with the naked eye. Literally--a million times dimmer. Out of 1,000,000 photos of light emitted by the sun, your glasses should block 999,999 of them allowing just ONE through.

Can you really see a flashlight on your cell phone through that? If you can.... I wouldn't use those glasses. You should be able to see the sun and nothing but the sun.

School board/principal/whomever is worried about getting sued. Rather than doing the due diligence and work to get the proper glasses to provide this once in a lifetime experience, it is easier to bury your head in the CYA sand. What a sad world.

I'm telling you -- everyone, and I mean _everyone_, at least that I know, is talking about this or doing something, all ages, all walks of life. It feels like a national holiday that knows no boundaries or baggage for _everyone_, well, under the sun :). To deny this to these kids is a crime.

There is a brilliant Isaac Asimov story on this exact theme, tho I forget the name.

Anyway, happy eclipse day, whether you can make it to the totality path or not. And definitely, take your kids out of school, then vote in a new school board next election.

I just did this with a pair I got from AQ and they did indeed show a very dim image of the flashlight on my iPhone. So I went out and looked at the sun through the lenses and didn't have any ill effects--didn't even get an afterimage.

We are all set for 2024 - have our accommodations, too. My daughter lives in the path of totality in New York, and actually has a lake house about 10 minutes drive from her residence - room for the whole extended family!

No.

We are in NASA land. We got the ISO 12345 blah blah. . . appropriately rated glasses. We have scheduled it into the school day. It's going to be so cool.

So are you now saying the glasses I bought from AQ are not safe? That flashlight on my iPhone is pretty darn bright - too bright to look directly at. Have you tried it with the eclipse glasses?

No, they're definitely safe. =)

I don't have an iPhone and imagine a puny little light attached it to, so perhaps it is bright enough to be seen dimly. *shrug* I've looked directly at lightbulbs with the glasses and couldn't see a hint of light through them. Just seemed unlikely to me that a smartphone would have a light brighter than a regular lightbulb!

I can't see a regular light bulb either with the glasses, but, yeah, that iPhone light is a bright bugger!

Not Asimov but Ray Bradbury, I think. "All Summer in A Day."

Apparently started looking too late for eclipse glasses. If you've been following the news, apparently there's a shortage and price gouging. Fortunately, my brother had purchased a pack of 10 for 25 cents each, so he gave me a couple. They have no ratings of any type, just say "Solar Eclipse 2017" on them. Since I can't buy any others even if I wanted to, these will have to do. I can't see squat through them. Turning on the flash on my Samsung tablet in "Assistive Light" mode, it's visible as a dim orange dot.

We are in the path of 2024 too! Excited I can sit in my backyard and watch it then.

Won't be the "Great American Eclipse" but it will be the "Great North American Eclipse" I think I read.

That's because the 2024 eclipse starts (on land) in Mexico.

Utah (where I am) will be in the path of 2023 (annular) and 2048 (total) eclipses. I'll have to travel south though.

Tinted welding lenses are PERFECT for viewing. The higher the number, the stronger he tint. #14 is actually recommended. Any welding supply store should have, at least, #12 or higher. And the best part, they're cheap as hell.

The Bradbury story you're thinking of is more about how kids can be horrible. Like a lot of his shorts, actually. The Veldt etc come to mind.

I just read on NASA's page about the glasses. "Some glasses/viewers are printed with warnings stating that you shouldn't look through them for more than 3 minutes at a time and that you should discard them if they are more than 3 years old. Such warnings are outdated and do not apply to eclipse viewers compliant with the ISO 12312-2 standard adopted in 2015." Although the did state that even with the glasses, your eyeballs can heat up, so they recommend you look away to let them cool down.

I know it's a bit late in coming, but they have great resources here.

My brother-in-law, who is an idiot, called his mom yesterday and told her not to go outside today, it's just too dangerous. Got her all wound up, she doesn't know what to do.

Too funny. My neighbour is doing the same thing, won't let her 10-year-old kid or newly acquired puppy outside today, at all. Says they will go blind. I told my wife and daughters to go out on the front lawn around the peak of the eclipse, roll around the ground in a frenzy with arms and legs flailing and covering eyes, moaning and cry about the sun burning them up. You know, for laughs. we get on well with those neighbours and I think they'd be able to laugh about it. anyway, wife and kids went up to some park to watch with the astronomy club so that fun is out. I'm at work, surrounded by nerds (okay scientists, and I count myself as one) so pretty soon I expect most of the staff to be outside in the parking lots. But we will only get to see a 70% eclipse. Looks like we'll be in the path of totality for the next one though.

For those who _were_ allowed out today, hope it was a magical experience.

Nebraska sand hills was an awesome place to view (its an awesome place even without an eclipse). Clouds were a bit dicey. fog didn't burn off til about 11AM, then thick grey ones rolled in about a half hour after totality. Really blind luck that we got to see it clearly; hope everyone else had similar luck.
