Remote car starters

Hi. We are trying to decide if we want to get a remote car starter for my son for Christmas. He is a senior in highschool. He is also doing a co-op at an elementary school, then goes to work after that. He's in and out of his car all day. We live in upstate NY. It's cold and snowy here.

I called two different places and got somewhat conflicting reports on them. One place told me that for $199 (sale this week) I get one with two remotes with a 1000 foot range. My son parks in the back of the HS parking lot. I have no idea how far it actually is.

The other place said for $250 I get a remote with the same range, but for $280 I get one with 3000 ft range. He said a 1000 ft range is basically out your front door to your driveway. He said 3000 ft is much better. Said you have to consider going thru the wall of the building and all the way out.

The car is a 2005. It's got low miles on it, We are hoping it lasts thru college and at least a few hrs after. However 280 is a little more than I wanted to spend. Does anyone have a remote starter. Will the 1000 feet truly not be good enough or is the other guy just trying to upsell me. I would hate to buy it and him have to go outside to start the car.
Thanks.
Vicki

Convert this guy to letterboxing so he learns how far 1000 feet is! That is about a fifth of a mile, the distance from my front door to my driveway is about 25 feet. I had a remote starter on my last car and loved it. We have a detached garage and I could start the car while in my house which meant it went through the wall of the house as well as the garage wall. My guess is that it was the 1000 foot range model. Of course, they are going to want you to buy the higher priced model but my guess is that the 1000 foot range would work just fine.

Mine had 1000 foot range and I could reach it across the retail plaza parking lot from the doorway of the store I work in. It is quite a distance and was never an issue.

I have one with the 1000 ft range and I can start my car from inside a grocery store in a plaza, through the wall or window. Plenty of range. He may find it better to stand near a window if it's a big distance, but it's do-able. Not worth an extra $100 for better range on an older car.

Great! Thanks for all the advice. Now we have to decide if its even worth it. If he doesn't get it till Christmas, he gets to use it the rest of this winter. (which could go till april!) But then as a freshman next year, if he gets in to his first choice, he wouldn't be allowed to even have his car on campus. Meaning, its going to sit in our garage all winter. hmmm worth it or not?
