Its comical... especially since most men think they don't NEED directions... so why are they trying to read them anyways? Why don't they just wonder around until they stumble upon where they needed to be a week previous???

As far as generalities go, yes, there is one boxer who I presume to be a male, and I do have trouble with his clues, but only because his directions are too short and not specific. And my 83-year-old father writes poor clues. I don't even understand half of his e-mails, but hey, I'll give the old guy a break. He's allowed to take a drink now and again.

Do this experiment:
1) Draw a simple geometric figure.
2) Have two people sit, back to back,
3) One person describes the drawing, and the other person tries to reproduce it without seeing it.

Analytical people tend to be better at describing well. Some people just aren't so good at it.

Quote I think we can only do this thread if the girls are not allowed to comment here. Can we make that a rule?

Ok, I can see that the men did the smart thing and didn't comment. And that the women didn't follow the instructions.

So much for this board.

Quote Although, there are times I wish there was a life line number you could call and ask. Especially when you are already 2 miles into the hike

I was wondering about leaving my number on the clues for boxes that are harder or have a twist.

I think this would be a bad idea for many reasons.... reverse look up, being one of them. If strangers have your telephone number, they can find out a lot more about you that you might not want them to know.

I know, I'm posting this on the no girls allowed board, but I felt the need. :)

Here's a more interesting twist to your experiment:

1. Person A and Person B sit back to back.
2. Person A draws a simple geometric figure.
3. Person B will draw the geometric figure, only after asking enough questions of Person A, that Person B feels (s)he has successfully drawn the figure.
4. Person A and B switch roles.
5. Repeat 1-3.
6. Compare figures. Discuss the results.

This little experiment tells us more about communication between people than it does about who is the better communicator. I may be able to successfully draw something that has been precisely described, and at the same time, fail miserably in drawing a figure that someone else describes in less detail. A sucessful drawing depends on my ability to extract information to create the same image.

This is one of those very fascinating exercises I enjoyed in school. A very teachable lesson. Humans are a funny species to study.

Me too! Please don't kick us girls off this board. It's too funny!

As for clues, I usually go with my husband and son (who is very careful and as into being secretive as we are). I'm usually the one who deciphers the clues and finds the spot, theoretically because I'm a better at it (analytical thinker), but I suspect mostly because DH enjoys the relative peace on the hike while I'm occupied with clues.

But I can never get the actual box. I'll poke and prod and dig forever, and then when I give up, DH says, "Hm, are you sure? Let me try." Of course, he returns in 2.3 seconds with box in hand. EVERY TIME! AAARGH!

Or perhaps when I come back and read it again I'll still think that it's mysogynistic, and I'll respond appropriately.(/quote>

I find it interesting that whenever men have some fun (and this is a great example) we are labeled as "mysogynistic" (sic) (correct spelling is misogynistic) but when women have a laugh at the expense of men...well, that's just the way it goes!!!!

At any rate, I was going to start a thread on a similar subject but I'll hold off. I don't know if it's because I am a new letterboxer or if the clues are just poorly written but I have come across some poorly written clues as well. I have no idea whether they were written by men or women but it's maddening as heck! (not sure if I can use the h-e-double hockey sticks word on this board)

If it's a vague, cryptic clue that's one thing but if they are basically directions that's another. THAT'S what I've been working with alot. When someone says "turn right at the cedar tree" and you're in a forest of cedar trees...well, that's not a good clue.

Ha....that's almost funny!

What IS funny is if you are going to use words that "us boys can understand" make sure you spell them correctly.

Now THAT is funny! LOL!!!!!! LMAO!!!!

Quote Check out "Are you watching closely" Lb...very cool!

This one is killing me! So tell me about lifelines and how do we use them cuz I'm needing one with that one. I have solved a few things regarding it but I come to a roadblock. I have spent about 3 hrs just on the site itself!

Welcome to Letterboxing, nwbulldog! As first, and perhaps only finder of "Are You Watching Closely", I have to encourage you to please keep trying! Sondog is a talented and prolific planter, I feel so lucky to live nearby. Admittedly this is a tough one, but I think even a newbie can crack it. ;)

If you happen to be traveling along I-90 through the Idaho Panhandle this summer, do your homework and stop for one or all of Sondog's excellent boxes. Each one is a delightful treat.

Thanks! I actually live quite aways away from where I think the actual letterbox might be...I'm still stumped by the website! Ha...I'll keep plugging away though...

I guess you can see the same thing when you play Pictionary. Some people can catch the essence of the idea/word with the most simple of drawings. When I play the game with my wife's family, I get blown away by what a few simple lines can convey! In one game her brother drew >-------------
