POLL: Move PAL Day?
Board: State: Florida

Thread (disabled) Board
In this thread, FloridaFour had the wonderful idea of moving our PAL Day to winter. I was thinking late January, or heck, even February 14, and we can call it PALentine's Day. :)

Pros:
Better weather
Not involved in the national event, which has become a bit of a mess
Competing against ourselves rather than other states (though some may see this as a con)
Making our own rules (for example, having it stretch over several days)
More possibilities for plants from vacationers

Cons:
Not participating in the excitement of national PAL Day. This is a big one, and may outweigh everything for some folks.

So here's the poll:

AGREE if you'd like to move PAL Day to winter, and not participate in the national event.
DISAGREE if you'd like to participate in the national event, as we do now.
INTERESTING if you'd like a combination. Maybe a token box for the national event, and all-out for winter.

In Ontario we hold an OPAL day on Groundhog Day (February 2nd) to encourage people to plant winter-friendly boxes.

For what it's worth, here's my $.02.

I love the idea, but think we should have it either mid-November or the first week of December. I checked my stats and the clue hits and finds on my boxes went up dramatically in December (thank you snowbirds!) and then dropped in April. The earlier in our "season" we host this, the more opportunity we have to hunt each other's boxes before the weather gets unbearable again.

Eeyoremama hosts a big event in Feb and will be working on those carves/plants and FloridaFour and I are hosting a big event in March and will also be busy carving and planting then. By hosting the PAL day before the holidays, it would allow us (or at least me, as I shouldn't speak for them) to participate in a more robust way.

And, I still plan on participating in the national event, as well as the other virtual events that are going on this summer and December :)

I should have been clearer--this is on the Florida board because I was only thinking of moving it for Florida.

Oops! My bad. Duh, it's the FL board. That's what happens when I use my iPhone too much on AQ. I don't live in FL anymore so I really should stop checking it huh? Sorry!!

I agree with everything in this post, especially the part about not conflicting with Eeyoremama's annual event. :-)

PS...I LOVE the idea of it stretching over several days! I saw some requests for longer hikes, and this would allow me to do that...there's an 8 mile hike at Lake Kissimmee that I have in mind :)

What do I click on for "Don't care, won't participate, don't support the concept of a PAL day"?

I agree with Gina. (NotMyCircus) I will probably still plant a token box or 2 on PAL Day. Just to join the fun.

But I also like Nov. or early Dec. for planting, for the same reasons.

As for "competing" I say this is just to inspire us to improve our numbers, not a contest. I think we are all cool with that. So if this year we can hit 50 boxes, we are probably doubling last year. Having more planters here in winter is helpful for us. And then try to increase by say 10% or more per year. As we have more boxes, and people improve their clues, boxes and carving, this will hopefully become more popular here.

I personally, would also encourage the geocachers to plant hybrid boxes. I know we have several who also geocache, due to lack of letterboxes. I want to recruit more like-minded geocachers over to letterboxing, keep our boxes safe by educating, and this is a good way.

Kudos to Geogirl, who has a geocaching store with some letterboxing items and a letterbox.... I still need to check that out!

I think in the past few years we have breathed some new life into letterboxing in Florida. Let's keep up the good work! :)

I think it is a great idea. (as a former Florida resident...) some other ways to get away from too much competition, but still have goals....some other states have done things like try to have a stamp in every county (Arizona)...or even every town (New Hampshire did that one back in the day.....everyone got together and made stamps for every incorporated town in the state and they planted them all...this was back when Connecticut was the King of the letterboxing world and they were just trying to get the Conn folks to plant more boxes in New Hampshire!! :-) In Washington State, we are trying to do the every town thing right now. We especially want to get more boxes out into the Eastern part of our state. One of the things we talk about is how folks get involved in letterboxing. When they hear about it, the first thing they do is look up their hometown on AQ and when there are NO letterboxes near them. They immediately lose interest. Our goal was to make sure that there is at least one letterbox for folks to find !! Another way folks find the hobby is by finding a letterbox by mistake. So we just want to spread those boxes further a field. We have challenges to have boxes in more parks around the state and not just in the Seattle area.

it would be really nice if it didn't interfere with the annual "Love Those. . ." event my sister puts on. It's swiftly becoming our event, since she gets great ideas, then calls me in to plant them and clue write. i like this division of labor. ;-)

Anyway, that event is always the weekend closest to Valentine's Day. Any other weekend, and have at it. thank you.

Okay, so what I'm hearing is: do a little of both.

How about a token box for national PAL Day, then a bunch on our own.

I do want to avoid established events (thank you for letting me know!), so it looks like November, December, or January. I'm usually too busy with holidays in November and December. Is January a good time for everyone?

Apparently today was PAL Day in Georgia. Is that because it's World PAL Day, or did Georgia already establish its own PAL Day?
