Granny Butterfly posed this on the Ohio board, and it is with her permission that I am reposting it here, because Glenn has touched so many lives here on AQ (and in Letterboxing in general).

November 30, 2013

It is with a sad and heavy heart that I inform you tonight that I received a call from Mrs. Glenn Bergdorf, about Safari Man. They had been fighting a strong battle against cancer and today he has gone on to be with the Lord.

Final arrangements have not yet been made but Georgette will notify me when she has them. She has his account with AQ and you can post as you like about this wonderful and caring man we have all come to love.

This community has lost a wonderful friend tonight.

Chris and Sandy Imboden
Coffee Mug and Granny Butterfly

I had the pleasure of spending some time with Safari Man (and his wonderful sister, Okie Dog) at LBCon, and he was a true gentleman. He was even a good sport when I created a special "All-Pink" AQ Theme just for him. I will miss him.

How sad! I just made it a point to find some of his boxes over the summer, and he did reply to me when I found them.

Okie Dog- my friend, I am so sorry for your loss! Xoxox

Everyone is more than welcome to post their stories of Safari Man on the message boards, but please also sign his tributes page. Share your stories of him--I'll add more server power if I have to handle the heavy volume because I just know there are a lot of them!

Rest in peace, Safari Man. I'll miss him. A lot of us are going to miss him.

Oh no, this really saddens me. The first time I met him, it was at my first event in Gatlinburg as a newbie. He made such a great impression on me with letterboxing. After meeting him I was determined to find everyone of his boxes in PF and Gatlinburg. He was always so good in replying about his boxes and even carved a stamp for my event last year. One only has to meet him once to know what a great guy he was. He truly was a fine gentleman and will be miss dearly. My sympathies to his family and hugs to Okie Dog. :(

This saddens me tremendously. I had the pleasure to meet up with Safari Man three times, once here on my own turf just last Christmas. Each time I always felt I was in the presence of someone very special. Rest in Peace, Glenn.

For Georgette and Okie Dog if there is anything at all that Jo and I can do for you please let us know.

Okie Dog you are in my prayers. I know that you have a loving heart that must be breaking with the loss of your brother. Please know that we are thinking of you and will have listening ears and strong shoulders should you need them. I am so sorry

I never personally met Safari Man but I really enjoyed finding several of his series in Gatlinburg, TN. He sent me a nice note which I thought was really sweet. Now I want to run out and find as many of his plants as possible.

I feel the same way. I've never found any, and never got to meet him except on the boards. I feel like I've lost something I didn't even have yet.

What a hole he will leave in our hobby!

Heaven must have some wonderful places to letterbox. May this new journey be a safe one. Say hi to my Dad. He sounds a lot like you....a true gentleman. I am sure he will be the one to meet you at the Pearly Gates.

To the family left behind. He is now free of any hurts and pains. Always remember the good times and rejoice in them.

Glenn
I remember the very first time I met him. It was like meeting a famous person. I was sooo excited. I could not wait. It was like waiting for a rock show to start. I could not wait for him to get there. When Glenn got there it had so many question about carving. He sat down and talked to me am out all I had to ask. encouraged me to keep trying and not to give up.
The next event came and he was going to be there and I was just as excited to see him again. I had to tell him about the things I have carved and more questions. I thought he would not remember me for sure. But guess what he did. :)
Glenn you are already missed!!!

We too missed meeting Safari Man but after reading his Profile Page, we see we missed a man of rare humor and gentleness. I'd bet there aren't many who could say they've planted 75% of the number of boxes they've found. He'll certainly be adding to Preboxed's letterboxes in heaven.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Safari Man, but in late August, his Roundhouse Museum letterbox was my 233rd find, and when I logged it, he sent me a lovely note saying how glad he was that I had found his box. At that point in my experience, most planters didn't acknowledge finds like that, so I was very touched by his response and sent a reply. In my all-too-brief virtual encounter with him, he left a lasting impression as a very kind and thoughtful gentleman indeed. I am holding his family close in my thoughts.
With deepest empathy,
Rebecca

Had the pleasure of having lunch with Glenn in Parkersburg, WV a few years ago. It was a great experience with plenty to discuss. I could imagine him being able to have an hour conversation with anyone he would meet.

Will be going out today to get that last box of his in my area. They are always worth the walk.

Wishing the best possible for Okie Dog and the family during this difficult time.
