I almost always comment. Why? I just think it's a little nicer than only seeing the found report. I appreciate that the stamp was planted and I can take a quick moment to thank them and appreciate the location, stamp, clues, and so forth.

I will almost always let someone know if there is a full logbook, etc., and I will also try to remedy anything I can. That's why I carry mini-logbooks, paper towels, etc. I always appreciate others caring for my letterboxes, so I try to do the same. I let them know what I've done so if others have commented that a logbook is needed (and I've replaced it), then they can remove the maintenance icon.

I only make suggestions about the clues if it's truly needed. I would NEVER be critical of the plant. If I can't find the stamp or if I didn't enjoy the hunt (which rarely happens...), I clearly believe one should never be rude. My general rule of thumb is to show respect.

But, of course, that's just me. I appreciate the hobby and other letterboxers. I try to show that in my found reports.

And you type really slow : )

I try and comment on boxes I've found. I actually try and respond back to responses of boxes /hitchhikers of mine that are found too. Do you need to leave a comment ? No. But honestly if none is sent with a found box of mine I'm a little bummed. Especially if its a really neat spot and nice carve.

I always comment on individual boxes and LTCs. Even if just a short note. And if the owner emails me back, I give them whatever details I can remember, if they need to know.

Sometimes at events, there is a long series of boxes. In this case, I make a general series comment, and if one or 2 boxes have a problem, I comment on those, naming them in my comment.

I try to always leave a comment, be it "cute carve!" Or "replaced the ziplock." I know I'd like to see comments on my plants (if anyone would ever find them!) so I leave comments. LB karma. :)

When you find a traditional box or even a LTC do you leave a comment or not?

This brings up a good question. When leaving a comment on a Hitchhiker Hostel, do you leave a comment take a comment, or do you just leave a comment never to be heard again?

I always leave a comment. I enjoy it actually lol. I always like to see comments when one of my plants are found. I think most boxers do. Although I have seen before when the boxer doesn't allow comments to be posted..no comments at all. I like comments myself.

One comment I enjoyed on a box of mine, was "saw an otter in the pond". When I see things like that.... I know I found an awesome hiding spot! I myself never saw an otter near my boxes, even on one that is called Otter Trail!

Whenever I see wildlife or enjoyed the view enough to take pictures, I try to comment on the beauty or interest of what I saw.

I usually leave a comment on AQ. Many times I feel rushed when stamping the logbooks and can't think of something witty to say. When I get back to the computer, I usually say something. If the box or logbook is damaged in a way that I cannot fix on the trail, I let the owner know. Recently, I let an owner know that their new logbook was damp and that I had replaced the baggie just in case they wanted to move it to a drier location or use additional protection of some kind. If the box is in good shape, I usually at least thank the person for planting the letterbox.

"If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all." Hence, I usually don't hunt HHH's at all. No good can come of it.

I only comment if there is a major issue, such as a damaged box or full logbook. Otherwise, I log boxes for my own benefit only, so as to sort what I have an have not found.

I don't need nor expect comments on my own boxes, though folks are free to do so. I have found most comments to be pointless.

"If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all."

Never liked that saying. Where would we be if the Founding Fathers followed that advice? The Declaration didn't really have anything nice to say about King George, did it?

Hmmmmm that was the reason I had said anything at all. I get a lot more finders then comments. That must mean one thing. I did think was was not to bad of a carver.....

A great carve does not necessarily make for a great letterbox. There is more to it then that.

I always comment. Sometimes I'll write something in the log book, but I always comment on AQ when I log my find. I figure if people are taking the time to carve a stamp and find a spot to hide it, and write out the clue, I can at least take the time to make a comment. If something notable happened (saw a deer lounging about in the trees, got 30 mosquito bites, got accosted by some guy who thought I was a thief) I'll say so in my comments. If not, I'll say something good about the letterbox, because there's always SOMETHING good to say. If there was something wrong with the box, I'll send a private message to let the owner know. Especially if I can't fix the problem myself.

So, when you tell Mama Wolf that her boxes suck, you're putting yourself in the same league as the Founding Fathers?

Ooooh, I gotta beg to differ there! There have been a couple of times when the best thing I coulda said would have been "Thanks for showing me just how s#*@ty a letterbox can get!"

OK, lemme see if I can describe this example without pointing fingers: Box was in Florida but the clues said it was in Georgia. When asked about that, the owner said "I know it's in Florida, but it's close to Georgia so I put that so finders would know where it was." Box contained several small store-bought stamps of a religious nature. Box was a tattered container that never dreamed of being watertight, so everything was soaked. Box wasn't actually hidden, it was just set on the grass behind a small rock -- and about ten feet from a well-hidden geocache. That, combined with the Florida/Georgia thing, meant it was found by dozens of geocachers but no letterboxers -- until a geocacher I know told me about it.

So, just exactly what good could I have said about that box?

It wasn't near a dumpster in a seedy part of town. That's always a good thing ;)

The old default--"Thanks for the plant!"--which is basically meaningless.

It was near a dumpster! And right across the street from a biker bar!

But I was mentioning this discussion to SWMBO, and she reminded me that the drive out there was pretty nice. Can't really argue with that, so I guess there was something nice to be said after all.

There was another box that came to mind that, when I arrived at the hiding spot, it was among a pile of scrap metal at the end of a dead-end road in an industrial park. I'm asking myself "Why would anyone plant a box here?" when I realized that that was the point. I hadn't picked it up when I first read the clues, but the planter's intention was to show finders the worst places imaginable to illustrate how horrible mankind treats the planet. And not just one box, either -- he had planted dozens of these! Fine, now I understand -- and promptly ripped all those clue pages outta my log book and threw them into the nearest dumpster. But on the good side, the box did contain a hand-carved stamp. It wasn't particularly good, but it was hand-carved.

Au contraire! It means I appreciated the box -- which would be a lie!

(I was going to comment to Spoiled Rotten's original post, but it has been deleted, so I'll tag onto this one......)

The comments part of letterboxing is one of my favourite things. I don't think I'd do as much letterboxing if it weren't for comments. It's a diary and social connection for me. I often consider what I'm going to say about the experience as I'm walking to the box and will scribble notes on my letterbox printouts.

So was I, so I'll do what you just did! ;)

Almost everyone who commented about this said the comment and enjoy the comments. No problem with any of that and I enjoy the comments as well.

However, my hat is off to those that don't comment, and I've been wanting to say something to the affect for a little while now. If someone doesn't comment, then I don't have to reply to their comment, which alot of the time I don't, but I always feel that pull towards, "I should reply with something since they did!"

If someone doesn't comment, I don't take offense - they took the time to find the box, and that's compliment enough for me.

I've had almost 3 full PAGES of AQ mail since yesterday, 98% of which is all people logging finds. I am extremely greatful that not everyone leaves comments, and to those that don't, I think that that is completely fine.

To those that do, carry on, my friends. Either way, you're all fine by me. ;)

One thing to keep in mind too is that when someone logs the box on their account and on sub-accounts, you'll get the notice for the main account and all of the others, but only the main account notice will include the comments.

I had figured that out a little while ago. And if I'm not mistaken, AC's is a sub account of yours? I've noticed that with others as well, and knew that if one person commented, it was coming from both (or more) anyway. But that was good info for others to know! ;)

Yeah, it makes logging a lot easier that way. Unfortunately, I can't put my account as a sub-account of hers at the same time.
