Painting over the surface with clear nail polish might help slow down the wear

This also works to protect your skin if you are allergic to nickel and would like to wear costume jewelry.

I use coated-wire keychains to attach the pathtags to my letterboxing pack. AND, place each pathtag in its own clear plastic coin capsule to protect it. When the capsules become overly scratched it's simple to just replace that and the tag will sustain in perpetuity.

The Air Tite coin capsules that I got were from eBay. They are made for the U.S. Quarter size.
