That's a nationality - a very well-defined thing, as opposed to ethnicity, which is a vague, poorly defined but important to social scientists thing. Here in New Zealand, we get a completely different set of ethnicity options when we fill out forms. The whites generally get called Pakeha, which is a Maori term for the descendants of the settlers from England, but many people find that insulting. So we often get an option of European-New Zealander. But that STILL leaves me out. There is NEVER an American-New Zealander.

I always opt for "other" if its available. I agree with Cyclonic (holy cow!), I'm American, in the truest melting pot sense. When my kids were asked last week to submit a recipe for the school cookbook based on their ethnicity, we submitted Senate Bean Soup and Rosalynn Carter's cheese ring!

I may be caucaian but I'm not white. I'm beige with pink accents.

That's because we will never let New Zealand have you. You will always be an American!! =)
