Actually, I would think the verb TELLS what action is happening. An adverb would explain the action, wouldn't it?

On the subject of improper use of verbs.....

I so dislike the use of the word "verbiage" to mean "words." So jargonny, and not actually correct.

1. overabundance of words
2. the manner in which something is expressed in words; "use concise military verbiage"- G.S.Patton [syn: wording]

Quote verbage --spelling, jargon
/ver'b*j/ A deliberate misspelling and mispronunciation of verbiage that assimilates it to the word "garbage". Compare content-free. More pejorative than "verbiage".

It's American English, what do you expect?

Quote That doesn't even include the dreaded being verbs

When I was learning them, they were called helping verbs. My classmates and I would race to see who could finish them faster. Ready ... set ...

is am are was were be being been has have had do does did shall will should may might must can could

did I forget some? scary ... it's been more than 30 years! But knowing them and how they are used really helped me learn foreign languages. This is one reason I think language is logical.

They're all helping verbs, but only some are "being" verbs: is am are was were be being been.

Of course, one more helper "would" hide from you while you were searching the memory to thirty years ago!

Aha!! That Communications Theory class about a million years ago comes in handy every twenty years or so....

There are four groups of verbs: action, auxillary (helping), linking and modals. :-D

Hehe, I *would* forget one! Funny, though, I said it aloud while I was typing, it just didn't land on the screen.

Oh, COOL! In 4th grade, they really only hit the linking verbs and just use "am", "is", "are", "was", and "were" (which we call the dreaded Amisarewaswere Monster) and the only helping verb we do is "will" for future tense.

Frankly, I'm starting to actually MISS the days of sentence diagramming. At least then I was able to see how the parts of the sentence fit together and knew a verb when I saw one. My kids STILL underline nouns and adjectives as the verb sometimes in grammar work! :-O

Sometimes these boards make me laugh so hard I get sick to my colon. I'm gonna have to get off my asterix and get back to work soon.

I learned them this way:

am is are was were, be being been, do did does, have has had, may might must, can could, shall should, will would....

I notice that they are all still there, but in a different order.

It has a nice chanty rhymey feeling and rhythm!

What about this list of prepositions we had to memorize:

aboard about above across after against along amid among around at as, before behind below beneath beside between beyond but by concerning, down during except for from in into, inside like near, of off on onto, over past since through, throughout till to toward, under underneath, until unto, up upon, with within without!

I know it isn't all of them, but it sure is a lot. Funny that I can still chant them. I'll never forget that test. I hadn't studied for it, but I guess we chanted them enough in class that I got them all!

See... memorization is good for the soul!
