I agree! It's a wonderful movie, and the lead actress was nominated for an Oscar. I thought she was amazing and truthful in the role of Pikea.

BTW, this was a wonderful book for young people before it was a movie.

I just rented A Very Long Engagement and loved it. It is by the director of Amelie if you liked that one, this one is different. Along the lines of Saving Private Ryan. I cried! :-) But enjoyed it very much!

We saw it in the theater and loved it, too. Very sad, very hard to watch the battle stuff, but overall it was so beautifully done. Jodie Foster was too cool - her little cameo was amazing.

I about fell out of my chair when I realized that was Jodie Foster! I had no idea she was going to be in the film, so it was a complete surprise. Then I was amazed at her French.

I have the book already--just haven't gotten a spare moment to read it yet. Is this a movie where I'd rather have read the book first? I've got the DVD reserved at the library (yes, we're frugal too--so we can travel)--should I wait until after we read it?

I specifically haven't seen the LOTR movies yet because I want to read the books again (it's been a couple of decades for me). I've been so unimpressed with books turned into movies lately that I've been on this kick to read the book first so I'll have a nice initial 'mental' imprint of how the story flows instead of some Hollywood's bizarre twist and wacky interpretation of it. Anybody else do something similar?

IMO, books are always better than movies because there is room for character development and richness of detail that movies can't have due to time constraints. They stick to a single, primary story arch without the extra richness of secondary/supporting plot lines. Often comes out "thin."

That said, Whale Rider did a good job of conveying the intent and emotion of the book--thanks to the actress who played Pikea. LOTR also did, I think. They did a fine job of realizing Middle Earth on the screen, and the epic feel of the book, while doing their best not to trim too much from the story.

I agree with Quill. Though I've yet to read Whale Rider, (it's now on my list)
LOTR was beautifully done. Though I always recommend reading the book first, LOTR could stand on it's own.

I also want to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Denis Leary was on Conan O'Brien last night and he promoted A Very Long Engagement too! It actually was pretty funny. He said it was a chick movie, but had WWI stuff for the men and Jodie Foster speaking French and in Sex scenes!
He really was on to promote his TV show Rescue Me. It is on the F/X channel (which I don't have cable and can't see) but the DVD's are out at the video stores. I highly recommend Rescue Me! Great show.
