Historical Question?

Does anyone know where the term "black hole" originated as it pertains to postal letterboxing?
Did someone throw it out there at some point and it stuck? Or is it just one of those no-brainer kind of things...postals get sucked up mysteriously...must be a black hole from which not even light escapes...?

Anyone know who may have thrown it out there?
I'm pretty sure it was in use before the AQ trackers, and message boards. Back when we still used that Yahoo group to organize things.

I'm curious. And it would be great to add it to my little article for the LetterPost.
Any info appreciated!

Have you been through the yahoo group messages yet? There are some from August, 2004 in the "Successes" thread wherein BigGuy mentions "they're on my blacklist" then it evolved to Ruby T's comment (miss her still!), then SC Millers uses "Black hole."

Funny how its the same comments 7 years later. Different folks. How fun to go down memory lane and all these people that were so great in plb land.

How funny. I can see the sig stamps in my head.

Thanks, MoWizLiz,
I wasn't certain if the Yahoo messages went back that far. Not that it's THAT far! :)
But thanks for this info and I will check out those messages!

Interesting how black and dark are still used as bad or evil things in our society while light or white is the desireable choice.

Yabut, what do Referees represent? I guess I could answer that one. I always thought it was for id purposes. And nuns and priests?
Name the movie: If you're gonna shoot, shoot...don't talk.

It always seemed like a no-brainer to me: matter goes in, and nothing comes back out. Interesting though - I never really thought to wonder how we started using that term. I look forward to the results of your inquiry!

Looks like the first recorded reference was by Lightning Bug back in August, 2004.

Of course "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". Classic three way that all survivor players should watch.

Referees are to enforce the rules so the teams may decide the outcome fairly. Classic shirts represents both ends of the spectrum. I would be all for blue and white, purple and gold or just about any other colors for bball. Some sports have gone to a gray shirt (NBA) or an alternate color (soccer) to stand out from the two team colors. Volleyball, tennis, track, and other sports where the officials don't share the field have different needs. VB is white shirt with black short or pants.
