let’s start a letterboxing audit program and create some transparency in the field of letterboxing.

I like this idea. *nodding* That's what they do on Dartmoor to verify if you've made it into the 100 Club, after all. They don't let just anyone into that club! You not only have to earn your way in, but you have to prove that you earned your way in! =)

Actually, that's not such a bad idea. Practical considerations will be important. Reliability will require standardized procedures. I'm not volunteering to create them, but maybe someone has ideas. Letterboxing must adapt with the times.

First, who will audit the auditors? On what schedule will the auditing be done? Or will this be a one-time thing? Liars might be deterred by just one audit. Shaming can be very effective.

Did you raise this with anyone before today? And, if so, what was their reaction? Yeah?

We could also evaluate the effectiveness of the process by generating a simple linear regression from a multivariate analysis of all discernible factors. Further punitive factors, as introduced earlier, could be introduced to decrease the breadth of standard deviations, assuming the padders are indeed outliers. Nonetheless, a random sample of 278 does not guarantee a confidence level of .05. I would argue that there's no reason to sample if you have access to 100% data. You could simply do a full audit. You could maximize your reliability with replication. This would require multiple audits using the same methods. Perhaps three or four audit committees would suffice.

In support of A Permanent Reduction In Lying about Finds Occurring Over Long Stretches of time.

But what about the people who aren't lying. They really did find the letterbox, they're just too lazy to stamp into the box's logbook? They can prove they found it because they have the stamp in their logbook. But the auditors won't have a record of it.

Really, to prevent this destructive element from pervading our peaceful group, we need to get the Government involved.

Each state legislature will be required form a committee whose mission is to outline exactly how we can monitor who finds which boxes. Another committee will be needed to determine what to do to violators. A third committee will oversee the other two. After a two-year study, during which there will be a moratorium on new finds and plants to prevent PFX counts from changing during the audit process, all states will report to a federal committee that will review all findings and issue a certificate for each correctly documented find. All Padders will be issued fines that, since they're dishonest enough to lie about their hobby, won't pay anyway. Since the Government knows how to handle our business better than we do, the people selected for these committees will be required to have no knowledge of letterboxing, or even geocaching, just in case some common sense sneaks in.

This program has no funding at this time, but will proceed anyway, borrowing from China or Japan.

It would be alot simpler to just track the person down and 'open up a can of whoop ass' on them. Nothing says 'get your act together' like a good old 'down home' butt kicking... ;)

The Southeast already has this very effective method of auditing. The rest of you just need to get on board with the program.

Are you frustrated with padders? You know people who record letterbox finds and never actually visit the box? ...let’s start a letterboxing audit program and create some transparency in the field of letterboxing.

Old Silverback, I am right there with you. I just despise cheaters. In my line of work it cost us billions! I think auditing is a great idea, watching those peons squirm. I am officially offering myself to you, Silverback, to help you any way I can... with the audit! Meet me tonight at Sinbad's by the Bay around 7 so we can talk. When you get there just whistle and I'll come find you... you do know how to whistle don't you?

I totally agree with you Old Silverback!!
I took it upon myself to start the auditing process program locally and spent all morning retrieving 67 of the local boxes, (a lot more to go but it is a good start to judge the confidence level of ‘padding’!) I brought them home took out all the books to compare the ‘box log’ to the ‘on-line log’ and this is what I discovered in the Audit:

1) No log books where empty, most had one or more ‘mystery’ stampers,( see #6)

2) No stamps were dry from ink

3) Boxes that have been in ‘the wild’ for years are very smelly and dirty.

4) It took me MUCH longer than 45 minutes to do this. … I can’t believe 2 people can do 278 in the same time frame …(it has taken me 10 hours and I still have to replant some of them! (see #6)

5) It is easier to ‘properly’ replace the log in the box when there is one box, not A LOT of open boxes! 8-0!

6) I did discover that there are a lot of ‘non-registered’ Letterboxers! Don’t they know that the find does NOT count unless their Trail Name shows up on at least one of the websites?? Sheesh! I tore out those log pages so it accurately matches the ‘online’ log. However, this did get rather confusing due to the fact that sometimes the ‘online’ logs didn’t match with each other…. (I disposed of the offensive boxes due to the obvious illegality of them … )

I am 100% behind A Permanent Reduction In Lying about Finds Occurring Over Long Stretches of time, and will endeavor to do my part to have the padding in my ‘area’ be more of a private matter…..
