Quote It's funny how many areas of the country have come up with a word to serve this purpose, since English doesn't really have an official one, the way some other languages do.

In Michigan, we used to say "you guys". Didn't matter what gender the folks in the group were, either. It was always, "Do you guys want your stuffing on top of or next to your turkey?" or "If you mess up the frosting on that cake you guys won't get to eat any."

Which brings up more regionalisms... is it stuffing or dressing? frosting or icing? soda or pop? chili dawg or coney island?

Ah, memories...

Ha! I don't normally visit this board, but saw the subject and totally agree that the apostrophe should be between the y and a. However, most people I know write it ya'll, which drives me nuts.

In Miami and Cleveland (my childhood residences) the plural of you was "you guys" or "you people".

Since working with midwesterners for 16 years, I've tried to remove the y'all from my vocabulary and resort back to you guys since non-southern people always comment about the y'all. (I never did like "you people".) But, the y'all sneaks in occasionally anyway.

Ok. I stand corrected, but I will still spell it ya'll, even if just to annoy ya'll. LOL

For us, it is stuffing, icing, soda, and chili dog. But don't forget the miracle whip (no mayo.) Hehe...

I use Y'all on occasions. I don't have the accent for it though.

But being from eastern Ohio, half of my family says: "You-uns". Hard to explain, but that's pronounced all in one syllable. Comes out sorta like "Uens"

Me, too, though when I get back to NC, I can feel the accent creeping back. I tend to slip back into it when I'm around people who talk that way.
