I've gotten ~50 in a day but it was at a Mystery Gather. I had a mini notebook and just black ink. We were on a stamp and go mission. There were 4 parks, all packed with boxes. I was only able to get the boxes in 3 of them. The last set of boxes Disc Lava and I ran through. I came in 3rd for most boxes found for the day. There were prizes for who found the most. Poison Ivy came in first but he started very early, predawn. Most of the boxes were planted there for a short time.

Our record for one day is 58.
That was at the very first RED WHITE & YOU event in Wilksboro. Chihuahua Grande went boxing with us and she logged 69, only because we had hidden 11 of the boxes she found.
In her words "Charlie tried to kill us... dragging us from pillar to post all over the place, I thought I'd have to grab ahold of him and slap him around..... This is NOT how Dina and I roll".
*LOL*
It was fun, but we couldn't actually enjoy the hike or the views or whatever, going that fast.

We got 40 in two days at that event - that's serious boxing for us (me and two littler kids ;-)) They were all planted in such interesting places, and we did get to enjoy all the places (like the old school/museum!). That still ranks as one of our favorite boxing outings!

We did somewhere in the 30's down in Woofruff. Mostly drive-by but a few like a train series that we had to hike. Time of year also makes a big difference.....summer.

The most I ever got was 42 in a day, but that was the day we did a 'boxing event. Since the vast majority of the boxes were just on about one acre of land, it wasn't hard. I still stopped short of getting all the boxes. I like to go see new places so traveling back and forth over the same small area just wasn't my thing.

There's one thing about Asheville-- there may be a lot of drivebys but the locations that the boxes are in are VERY interesting-- haunted, historic, and/or scenic. And lots of great carvings.

It was fun, but we couldn't actually enjoy the hike or the views or whatever, going that fast.

And that is my point really. Why look to find tons of boxes all at once when you can't truly enjoy them? I would much rather find just a few really good boxes, and enjoy the journey and the clues as much as the boxes themselves. There is more to it then how many boxes you can find in a sitting, just as there is more to letterboxing then the stamp.

The reasoning for printing out clues for every box in a given area does make sense however, you just never know when you might decide to alter plans and go after a different box. It is better to be prepared.

However, I am still selective about what I will go searching for. The boxes just planted in Hickory, where they are in the parking lots of dealerships, I will not be searching for, as they do not offer what i am looking for in a box, which is something more then reaching out the car window for a letterbox. Some of the in town drive-bys we will be doing, they seem to be in interesting enough locations and, weather permitting, we will have our bikes with us and will bike between them all.

And because most everything seems to be a drive-by in the area, I hope to be planting as well, at least to get out on the trail. Should be interesting.

This particular time, we were going to the Event... and it's a ways up there... we don't get up there often.... so we wanted to get as many of them that day as we could. Plus, some of them were only for that weekend, and were carved by far away people who had sent them for the Event planners to use.

I'm glad there are all types of letterboxes. Those Drive By ones are perfect for the young mother with a small baby.... or a person who's husband hates letterboxing, but doesn't mind pulling in for a couple of minutes on the way to something else, or the person who has health issues and isn't able to hike,...... etc.

Every box is "someone's" CUP OF TEA ! I prefer the historic ones.... or the scenic ones....
ones where "getting there" is half the fun of finding the box. I like to stop and take photos and all that.

See you soon,
Dina B.

Well, I suspect you are coming to the event for more than the boxes and the area since you could be picking some much better scenic locations for a trip to NC. Hickory ain't exactly the home of gorgeous national forests. ;)

But if there's one thing the NC folks know, it's how to have fun. Heck, we gather at a freakin' outhouse in the freezing cold and have a blast.

It's good that you and Schizokeet will be boxing as you like. It is the best way to make your own fun. But there is MUCH more to the Hickory event than just the boxes. Oh, sooooo much more....
You of all people know that I'm very capable of making my own fun at any event. And, wellllll... giving you crap at the last event I found to be very fun. *nodding*

Don't think I've forgotten about the things you have said about my boxes....

Wish you and Cyclonic had been at Carrier Park today because that flaming pile o' poo would have really been popular today (20 degrees/wind/snow). LOL!

I'll probably be missing the Movie Madness - it's Mum's 75th birthday and unless I get snowed in, we're gonna have a party! But I'll be looking forward to photos!!

Well, truth be told, we are coming to the gathering in Hickory because Vegas was out of our budget this year ;-)

The point being, we have learned to become much more selective about what we spend our time looking for. We want to enjoy the journey as much as the box itself.

And that doesn't mean it has to be a long hike either. I have found and planted my share of drive-bys as well. If the clue is clever, and the box fits the location and it has a reason for being, then I think it is a fine box. But a box at a Hyundai dealership were the clue is, "Find number 18 in the service area. Get out of your passenger door and check the ground cover." I mean, really, if you want to plant a box there for what ever reason, how about asking to place it inside? How about putting it in some clever box. I mean, do some foot work to make the box the best you possibly can.

We will make our own fun though, and we plan to do more then boxing down there.

Well, with you and Mama Wolf both in attendance, I can almost guarentee they'll be some betting......... and if you behave too badly, perhaps we'll see a magic show and you'll dissapear........
If Nanni and Dixie come, apparently we'll have SHINE and HOOKERS.......

It's been a long time since I've sung WAYNE NEWTON, but for you, I'll try.....
*ahem*
Danke Schoen, darling Danke Schoen.
Thank you for walks down lovers lane.
I can see, hearts carved on a tree,
letters inter-twined, for all time, yours and mine,
that was fine.

We'll be ready for you.....

Now if I can just round up a new car to give away, he'll be all set.

Don't sweat it, it is the pleasure of my company she is most excited about.

Alas, sadly for her, I am a happily married man.

Okay, I'll play along-- with Papa Wolf plotting to run off with the Hookers in the mountains, I just may be free. I'll have to pick someone that could handle it, though...

While an exchange is nice.....payment for services rendered is better with the proceeds going toward more boxing supplies.

I will never be able to read the name "Hickory" without saying it the way Jon Reep says it in his comedy routine. I even do the head shake with it.

Fairly easy to do at NC gatherings. I believe he and I agreed it's like shooting ducks in a barrel. *nodding*

Oh yeah - much much harder to "Spot the Only Sane Person Here" - cause that person doesn't exist - not at an NC gather!! LOL!!

It really has nothing to do with you, Nanni. It's a reference to those hilarious funny men of Monty Python, whom Papa Wolf and I love so--and who annoy Mama Wolf so much. :-D

Spot the Looney is a game that Papa Wolf is familiar with. We actually used to play a version of it in college.

However, now the name of the game is more about where he's going to get attention. And, as Knit Wit knows, it doesn't take much. Had Knit Wit gotten a hold of him there, she would have had him happily reciting Monty Python sketches.

I'm kind of now thinking that's the lesser of evils since he was looking for moonshine and hookers when he didn't get it that way....
