I'll be in Halifax for a day. Any that aren't posted on AQ?
Ithacabelle

Maybe I'll plant one while I'm at it - we plan to go to Shakespeare in the Park there, and we just did one for the Shakespeare in Delaware Park in buffalo, ny.

Hi there.

Was in Halifax in May.

The Backpackers Hostel LB is easy to get to in downtown Halifax. Royal Halifax is about 5 -10 miles north. Afraid that's about it.

The rest of the NS boxes are primarily in Cape Breton, and scattered throughout the NS mainland. (We've done them all except Yarmouth).

Cheers, Jiggs

Thanks! I was planning on going to the hostel, which sounds like a good place to escape the cruise crowd. We are traveling on a family reunion and only have part of a day in Halifax to get off the enormous cruise boat. It is not how we usually travel, and not enough time to get out of the city to some of the places we would normally go. A letterbox will add to the normalcy of it all. We are planning to go see Shakespeare in the city park. Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Dave and I planted a box in a small park in Halifax. "Royal Halifax".
We don't get up there as often as we want, so I am not very familar with the area. As a result, I can't tell you if you would be close enough to our box to try for it with your limited time in Halifax.

AS I recall, the cruise ships tie up about three blocks south of Gottingen Street (it parallels the waterfront). The Halifax Citadel is right downtown, and is well worth a visit, either a quick walk around or you can take more detailed tours.

Depending on your stopover time, you can either walk or grab a cab to the coffee shop, then walk back or grab a city bus to the waterfront or citadel.

One last question - what DAY of the week will you be in Halifax?

Unfortunately, the Royal Halifax box by the Von Der Isels will most likely be too far outside your area to pick up, as it's actually in Bedford, NS, north of Halifax.

Cheers, Jiggs

Thanks Jiggs.
I really have no clue where that box is. Pretty sad, actually!
We definitely have to get back to NS soon. When Dave gets some time off , we'll get out the maps and do a maintenace run to our eastern Canadian boxes.

2 other great sites right on the waterfront are the Bluenose II schooner - the fastest ship on the ocean in her day (immortalized on the back of our 10 cent coin - Canada has no "dimes") and the corvette HMCS Sackville, a WWII Canadian patrol boat that escorted convoys to anmd from Europe. She's the last of approximately 130 such ships built.

The garden in the city is beautiful too!

I found the Royal Halifax box last summer and it was in good shape. Not a lot of visitors because boxing isn't yet so big in Canada.

The hostel is right down the street from the Citadel so you could easily combine those two trips. :)

Thanks for all of your advice about Halifax! We were there on a Saturday; walked to the farmer's market, then to Point Pleasant Park, where we saw As You Like It in a matinee performance by one of the ruins there. We walked the kids back to the boat, then up through town to the citadel and the backpacker's hostel. It was great to find a stamp, and also good to have a cold beverage there after all the walking! We walked back along the waterfront and saw lots of great boats. We made it back onto the ship just 10 minutes before it took off! We definately have to go back someday - and get out of the city, for sure.
Cheers,
Ithacabelle

How's the box at the hostel doing? Is it in good shape? It was really sweet of them to let me place it!

The box is great, and we really loved the hostel. It seemed like a lovely place to hang out, although we couldn't stay long. The box was just sitting on the shelf, waiting for us, and the window seat was open. Our visit was charmed. Thanks!

It's called the Halifax Backpacker's Hostel, walking distance from the Citadel. I stayed there one night and they let me plant the box. Nice people!
