Oh, I feel for you. But there really is no arguing with the tribal authority.

Perhaps you can think along the lines of urban letterboxers, and try to locate some letterboxes in businesses that you have realationships with. Or you could go small and magnetic (if your stamps and books are small enough). Is there a vistor center for Cherokee? Could you place your letterboxes there. Or at the local library? Try to think of businesses that would appreciate educating people about the seven clans, and see if you could team up with them.

Good luck, and do let us know how this turns out!

Could I just combine all the boxes into one and use one new, bigger log that encompassed all 7...???

as far as businesses that I have a relationship with in Cherokee...there aren't any.
Not anymore!
I could try to spread them out in businesses etc but that would involve some places being fee areas and the boxes wouldn't really have a geographical link or connection. These were all along one trail or branches of that trail. I do want them in the same AREA at least. Ughh!!!!!

Quote He asked I move them elsewhere or combine them all into one bigger box.

They are at least willing to plant one. That's better than none! I'd ask them for their opinion on which box they would like to have planted and to suggest possible locations for the others. Find out what their reasons are for not wanting them all. Perhaps show them the success of the Biltmore boxes (their are quite a number of them on the grounds, I believe). Perhaps they have some good ideas-- perhaps not (you've got none now anyway so you have nothing to lose by asking for their suggestions).

Dixie:

I love it! I'd personally put a big log with all seven stamps in one box. (maybe that 4 quart lock n lock size? Put ask to put it in a place where the seekers will have time wo sit and ooh and aww over the stamps and take their time.. near a bench, or table or naturally occuring "place people can comfortably sit and LEARN" Put more educational stuff in the logbook like, every fifth or sixth page, so that when stamping in, seekers can learn more than what you can put in just the one clue.
I adore boxes like this.. chock full of goooooooooood stuff. And I'm looking forward to it when you figure it all out ;-D

good idea.
i will ask them more for their input.
the other 6 boxes are still there but I told him I would remove them by middle of next week and decide what to do. He was cool with that.

he did tell me he thought one letterbox would draw just as many nature and history lovers to the spot as 7 would. He has a point.

Dixiekin, I'm so glad that the tribal authority are at least glad to have you place a box there! If I ever get back to that area, I definitely plan to hunt these boxes.

As for what to do...I'd definitely encourage you to talk with the man who contacted you (manager? groundskeeper? some other authority figure?) and ask for his suggestions. Since they are open to working with you, they might partner with you for the placement. You could probably each learn something from the other. He might even have a perfect idea for a different place where you could hide a box big enough to contain all seven stamps. You might also find out specifically why they'd prefer one box over seven, and that information could give you a new idea about how to handle your placement.

I also love the idea suggested by 3Ms (I think) that included all the stamps in one box with a single logbook, but with further educational materials incorporated in the book.

My only real new suggestion is to look at the possibility of re-writing your clues so that seekers still have to follow the entire trail where the seven boxes were placed, perhaps picking up pieces of new clues along the way, finally finding a box with all seven stamps.

Hope some of that is helpful. Keep us updated on the results of your conversation.

I'm proud that you told the truth. My Mom always said "It's easier to be dishonest than honest"! I just had to move a box because I got wind that one of the trustees of this lovely park is very protective. You have to respect their wishes.

I think the fact that he's willing to work with you is a good sign. I'm sure there must be a way to combine them into one. Cam had good ideas- to go with the educational angle and put info into the logbook. I've been trying to do crossover boxes from the postal rings. Not as much detail but more than just an empty logbook.

I like the "virtual" clues you've done. I'm noticing a trend toward more creative clues. Good for us! It'll give our brain cells a workout.

Good luck solving the dilemma.

Take care, Orion

I liked a lot of the ideas that others have put forward--especially lisascenic's idea about putting them in the library. The library might be more willing to have several boxes, especially once you explain the educational aspects of them.

If that doesn't work, I was wondering if you could incorporate part of the solution from the National Park Service alternative boxes that were mentioned a while back. Basically, having people hike the trail and identify the places where you originally put the boxes, making them answer some question via the Internet about the box placement, and then sending them the boxes--or else having them find the boxes elsewhere. (Alternatively, you could stamp the images, scan them in, and then they could print them out and place them in their logbook.) If you did something like this, you could hide the boxes some place that was close to the trail but off of tribal lands.

If you don't want to do this via the internet or have to send the boxes, then maybe once you have them identfity something from where you'd originally placed the box, you could have a clue sheet with a second set of clues where you list various sites around the town with info about how to get there. So you'd list a lot of places, some of which would have boxes, some of which wouldn't, and then reference it something like this.

Possible box sites:
Dairy Queen on Main street and Grail
Drew Hospital
Liberty Park

First box: Find the waterfall at 184 paces on Cherokee trail. Count how many birch trees grow on the left side. Find that entry in the possible box sites list. (If there are two trees, for example, find the 2nd item on the list.) Once at that place, stand with your back to the "enter" sign in the parking lot. Go 34 paces north, 55 paces west. Look under the rock that looks like a frog for the box.

Does what I'm saying sort of make sense? It would be a little more involved, but if you could pull it off, it could be very fun.

it's not all of the triabl lands in question.
I think I will find a solution to this problem but at this time it is looking like it will be completely moved or all 7 stamps combined into one box. I will be working on the solution.
