Not a ton of snow yet. Drivable conditions as we speak. Just an FYI on hotels just in case. Between Lansing and GR there are two right along the highway. Portland has a Best Western and the Ionia M-66 exit has a Super Motel 8. From M-66 exit, it's about 20 more minutes to GR and 28th St. There are lots here and it's about 15 minutes to downtown. In addition, there are several downtown, but, the Days Inn is right across the street. I would check back for cancellations there.

TONS of snow here -- wow. Got to love the lake effect!

There are many, many hotels in Grand Rapids... and at least 3 of them are close by the museum.

Call the museum -- they would be happy to point you in the right direction.

We were promised 1 to 3 inches in central Ohio. And we got NOTHING!!!
It started with the freezing rain, but by the morning it was just rain.
For some unknown reason the city schools are closed but most of the suburban schools are scheduled as normal. My kids (suburban) school got a 2 hour delay, but my district (rural, and adjacent to my kids district) is business as usual! It makes no sense.

NOT FAIR!

I just talked to friends in Grandville/Wyoming area and they said it that the roads are not very good. I am mostly concerned about the I-96 stretch. I am still on the fence about this trip. We got about 4 inches here and are expecting about 4-6 more. If I get there I might not leave till Sunday!!!

Your friends are right -- the road are currently nasty...
But the snow is supposed to change to flurries by 7pm and no snow overnight.
Smooth sailing in the morning! : )

I'm not down there myself (orginally from down in that area tho), I'm up in the U.P., but I can tell you one thing. We've had winter warnings all winter so far and none actually hit us until the one this week. Wednesday was an absolute doozy for us, my work actually cancelled... in fact, the entire town shut down until much later that night when the plows could get out. We had 70 mph winds and I couldn't even see my neighbor's house directly across the street! My husband and I dug out a 10 x 15 ft area of snow that was up to my mid-thigh!

I've also talked to several people in Oklahoma, Kansas and as of this morning, Chicago. If you get what they're getting and especially after it goes across the lake it's not going to be a light and easy one.

Be very very careful if you make the trip and please pack a "survival kit." Include blankets and candles in it. A single candle can keep your car warm to the point you shouldn't get hypothermia, especially if you have the blankets and remember about carbon monoxide poisoning from your exhaust if you end up off the road.

Be smart you guys, it's Michigan winter!

Yeah, no break from the little white brain chiggers over here in Douglas either. I'll be shoveling all afternoon instead of carving the new signature stamp I wanted to have for tomorrow! School should have been closed today. The plows aren't running yet STILL and the roads are horrible for now. I had a tough time driving 4 blocks this morning. Lol!

However...this is Michigan. As soon as it stops coming down, the plows will be out in full force, the roads will be clear, and by late tonight, completely fine for driving on. Especially the interstates! They always clear those first. Just take it easy, as you usually do I'm sure. And I agree with MoonDuck. Extra blankets are great to have, and most fun for the kids to play with too, as was her other advice great. You never think it will be you in the ditch, until it is you in the ditch. And probably by no fault of your own.

Can't wait to see everyone tomorrow! Cootie warning has been issued!

I just thought of two things to add to the emergency kit as well, shovel and jumper cables. I don't remember it ever happening when I lived down there but up here, if you don't start your car often enough the battery can go dead.... and even if you do, sometimes the temps are cold enough here to make it happen anyways! During the blizzard the other day, I went out and started my car and let it run two different times just to be safe... a lot of my co-workers didn't and they had problems. Besides, you never know when you might need them or you might be able to help someone with them (I lent mine yesterday to a co-worker who used them to start her mom's car and then brought them right back).

I have a "collapsible" show shovel as well, the handle slides into itself. I can't tell you how many times that's come in handy as well from simple snowbank run ins to digging out my car tires b/c I got stuck in a driveway... to just using it b/c it was handier than getting out the real shovel for the time.

I guess I don't think about these things too much, I have a permanent survival kit in my car trunk (where I am in the U.P. and where I travel to here sometimes, it could be hours before I get help) and I also move it up into the car when I'm traveling far enough or in "dangerous" enough places b/c it's no use to me if I can't get into my trunk as well, don't forget that part!

Oooh, just thought of a flashlight too, make sure the batteries are good! You can signal with it if need be from the side of the road, from ditches, etc.

here is something i found at AAA

Winter Survival Kit
November 30, 2005

A winter survival kit costs less than $75, but it could save your life.
Coffee Can Furnace (the candle generates heat)
Carpet Strips (for traction under drive wheels)
Boots
Ice Scraper & Brush
Flares & Reflectors
Jumper Cables
Newspapers (great insulation when placed between skin and clothing)
Shovel and Sand or Cat Litter (for traction)
Tools & Flashlight
First Aid Kit
Food & Blanket
Tire Chains (for use on secondary roads only)
Remember, it’s usually best to remain with a stranded vehicle rather than to risk exposure or become lost while walking for help.

should also have water, and an extra coffee can for ..........you know and some tp, :J
