Usually I use a small piece of carving material that I have left over and whip up a little someting with a small logbook. It's not a big time consuming detailed piece.

I have gone the opposite direction with my HHs. I put just as much time and effort into them as I would into a traditional or postal letterbox. My hope is that if I make them really awesome and it is obvious that I poured a lot of care into them, then maybe people will be more likely to take the time to log them.
So far, it seems to be working.

I totally agree with this. I like to experiment with tiny, unique logbooks:
--the fuzzy Truffula tree logbook that has a Lorax stamp inside it
--the round moon logbook that has a "bubble" in it that holds my Bitty Batty stamp
--my Druid's Talisman series that are stamps mounted into a necklace like "talisman" strung to a felt cover logbook.

Of course many of my HH's are also from my children. They enjoyed carving but I just couldn't plant all those so off they went as HH's. We note in the logbooks that they are from children. One of them went to Disneyland, was signed by Mickey Mouse and was mailed home!

I can't say that I hear from them often but when I do the comments are very fun!

It's a gamble to release them and the odds are not good that you will get them back (or even hear from them), but the pay off if you do is really cool (those are stamps I could have never gotten otherwise!)!

oooh... I think that was me =o) I don't remember exactly who I recently sent on to, but it was someone =o)

I love HH's and I try to always give status updates to the owners... and I try now to take them home with me before releasing them again, just in case the owner wants it back or wants more info on where it has been. I used to release it again that same day if I was headed off to more box locations, but have since changed my thinking on that.

I too take them home with me. Besides logging the find, I scan the images and then contact the owner and ask if they'd like me to email them the scanned pages. No one has said no to the offer yet and they've been happy to see the logbook.

I found one of those! *scrambles for logbook* In LightninBug's hitch hiker hostel in Allentown, back in '08. It was lovely....
