'The Secret' and other treasure hunt books.

So, I saw this show on the Travel Channel about The Secret. One of the multiple shows hosted by Josh Gates. The Secret is one of those 'treasure hunt' books that were (sort of) popular in the 80's. A guy hid 12 keys (redeemable for 12 gemstones) in 12 public parks in 12 cities around the United States. Similar to other books of it's kind, there are poems and pictures that contain clues as to the location of the treasures (sound familiar?). One was found within the first year by three teens, and one was found twenty years after that. But no one has claimed any of the ten remaining treasures..... I gotta assume that the Letterboxing community, brainstorming together as a group HAS to have as good a chance, if not BETTER, than the average schmo.... Any thoughts? ..... And we also need to find Fenn's Treasure while we're at it! It all seems to be right up our alley.

I saw that too and bought the book (at my adult daughter's request) even though I wouldn't have a chance of figuring any of them out. That was a neat show--I saved it on my DVR.

I can't believe all these people are dying trying to find Fenn's Treasure. I saw that episode and he clearly said he walked to it from his car because it took multiple trips. Why are they riding the rapids and scaling mountains?

Unlike a letterbox, a box of real treasure is going to be really heavy! Not something you can easily lug up a mountain. It seems like it would be within a few miles of a parking spot. I heard that someone has walked right by it and missed it.

Fenn's Treasure is probably not that heavy. Although I've never read anything specific about the weight, Fenn took photos of the treasure (and box) before he hid it. It appears to only be about the same of a decent sized shoebox. Plus he was supposedly dying of cancer when he hid it. So I can't imagine he was at the top of his game, physically, at the time. He has also said that it was easily within walking distance from his car. All of that together leads me to believe that anyone would be able to carry it. And yeah, Fenn has claimed that many people have come within 500 feet of it, and at least one that came within 200 feet!

I'm wondering how he knows they were within 200 feet of it unless he is able to watch. Close to his home? But then he wouldn't have had to drive. Hmm.

He knows because people are making detailed accounts of their adventures. Many of these people even show up on local news talking about where they are hunting. The treasure is a secret. The exploits of some of the treasure hunters... not so much of a secret.

I saw that episode! Love Expedition Unknown :)

When I was watching the show, I was thinking that the letterboxing community could surely figure that puzzle out!
