I think I'll have some New York style pizza for dinner tonight. Ok show of hands, how many of us New Yorkers have been to the Statue of Liberty? Not me, and I've only been to the City twice. Not that I don't want to go down, I just don't like driving in large cities.

Ive been to the city twice, but I rather like the rural outskirts better. I use to go herkimer diamond mining every year :)

Can the Green Tortuga come up with a theme tomorrow for "Boston" since they will be celebrating their World Series champions, Boston Red Sox. After all, the New York teams did not make it to the Series.

We try to take the trains when at all possible. Aside from the Amtrak trains and multiple stops along the Hudson, there is a regional one that runs from Poughkeepsie down to the city too. It'd get expensive if you used the trains all the time. But if you're only doing occasional trips to the city, it's really convenient. The added bonus is not having to worry about traffic, parking, bridge tolls, etc.

I haven't been to the Statue but I have sailed by it countless times. A friend had a sailboat docked at Liberty Landing. I lived in Hoboken for a year and a half and we were in the city four or five times a week. Sometimes we took the PATH, sometimes I drove. Driving in NYC is like GAME ON with the cabbies.

The first week of the month is always a state theme. This month just happens to be New York because New York was next alphabetically. Has nothing to do with the World Series. Ryan isn't in the habit of making themes for sports championships.

Ha! Love it, I've lived just outside NYC all my life and have made frequent visits, but still never made it to the statue!

Trains! When I was in Laurens for most of last summer, we drove to the Hudson Valley, visited the awesome Mohonk Mountain House, camped outside of Red Hook, and took the train to the city for one day. Armed with our subway map, we got ourselves around very nicely. I wish I'd gotten on the Staten Island ferry and gotten a close-up look at Lady Liberty, but instead went with my relatives to Governor's Island, which I don't really recommend, if you only have one day.

My experience with the NY subway system was pretty great, in comparison with the DC Metro, which I used quite a bit before going to NY. New York's signage and ticket machines were pretty user-friendly, unlike those in the capital. After Sandy, I was trying to picture those tunnels filled with water and it cramped my brain.

In August we watched the Barclays golf tournament on tv, which was played at Liberty National Golf Club, in New Jersey. There were many beautiful sweeping views of New York Harbor and the statue, which the announcers were misinformed about (as far as I can tell with a little online research; the NPS should have it right) and kept saying Liberty Island is actually in New Jersey.

You'd think their rediculous payroll would have bought ALL the World Series Championships.
Sheesh............... I hope they're enjoying the golf courses this fall.

Just sayin'!!! ;o)

I'm glad to see that it wasn't ALL the city. Sometimes I think the city and upstate New York should be considered two separate states....

Yeah, I think it is. But let's face it--if I used that photo on a New Jersey theme, I'd get a lot of flak over it! But I liked that picture too much not to use! =)

After living all my life in upstate New York, 12 years ago I moved to San Francisco Bay area. I enjoyed seeing the page. Sadly, I didn't find letterboxing until I moved here... doh.... look at all I missed!!!!! Did go back a few years ago and got some boxes in the area, and left them an apple letterbox (of course!!!!)

Love NY!! Took our Senior GS troop there for a week. So much to see and do there!!
This was how we started our day from Staten Island where we stayed.

We left the house and walked to the
bus that took us to the train that took us
to the ferry that floated us to Manhattan
where we took the Subway (Red 1 was our favorite)
that took us to the area we wanted and
then we walked from there.

It took us an hour and a half each way but it was such an adventure they didn't mind it. We wanted to do GM America but decided we couldn't get up early enough.

My mom's from Manhattan, so while I'm definitely a born and raised South Florida native, I have a little northern blood in me. I live the city and try to go as often as I can. I dream of my name in Broadway lights! Then I remember I can't sing or dance very well. ;)

still confused:

From the National Park Service site:

"Liberty Island is federal property within the territory of the State of New York even though it is closer to New Jersey."

Yeah, that's not far from the golf course I referenced. If you look at even google maps, it looks like the state line runs right down the middle of the Hudson River, with the islands on the Jersey side. So, like I said, still confused!

I guess I've always thought of it as US property and not a state property. It "belongs" to all of us and isn't part of just one state.
