Long Trail boxes?

I'm planning a NOBO Long Trail hike starting August 1st (with a secret hope for a yoyo, if I don't run out of time and/or money and/or leg strength).

And, of course, because I have Letterboxing Sickness, the first thing I planned out after gear but before mail drops and resupply points was possible boxes along the trail.

This is my hit list so far. Does anyone have any other boxes along the LT to recommend??

Green Mountain High Letterbox
The Long Trail
February Five Domino
Rockin' Deer
Long Trail Ale
The Letterboxing Fool on the Hill
James P. Taylor
Mr. Frimble
Love Doggy
Mad River Glen
Crashed Landing Letterbox
Vermont Quarter
Be Prepared! Camel's Hump -- Vermont
Top of Vermont
Top of the Notch
Lamoille Bridge Letterbox (?missing?)
Vermont State Symbols Series
Belvidere Mtn Firetower
Timbuktu

"Crashed Landing" is off of the Monroe trail so you'll have to take a bit of a diversion to get that one. I'll try to verify the status of the Belvidere Fire Tower box before you leave; no one has found it and I don't know if it's still there or not. I've been thinking it's time for some maintenance for awhile.

What day are you leaving?

That is so great that you are trying to list the LT boxes! In 2008 my dh and dd did the LT. Since they wanted to make good time on the LT, they were not interested in any boxes on spur trails - only ones right on the trail and they couldn't spend time backtracking or really hunting around for boxes. They needed obvious ones with clues going in their direction (SOBO).

I had a hard time trying to figure out which boxes were along the LT because in general clues start from a given parking lot on a spur trail. Which means first you have to find parking lots near the LT and then you had to read through each clue to see if the box would actually be on the trail. Then see if the clues make sense from their direction. I didn't have much time or patience for that. I asked on the boards for requests and just came up with a few. (2008 thread) They ended up only finding "Lookout Below" in Clarendon and "Mad River Glen--Ski it if you can!" Mad River Glen was a funny one because it was planted in the winter when there was snow. My 6'1" dh could barely reach it in the summer.

I know there is lots of info on hiking the LT, but if you have any questions about it feel free to ask.

Best to you as you research lbs for your trip and prepare for your hike! It is a great hike!

Have you been up there to the plane crash site? On all the maps I'm looking at it doesn't appear to be any more than a mile off the LT on the Alpine/Monroe trail. Am I reading them wrong?

I don't mind a short jaunt off-trail for a box or two, but I don't want to be going more than a mile, esp. up/downhill any more than I have to. :)

EDIT: Just saw you logged in as the last finder on LbNA, so yeah, you've been there. Derp. :)

Thanks for the message -- I had missed "Lookout Below" because I did an 'advanced search' using the phrase "Long Trail" for all boxes in Vermont. Funny thing with "Lookout Below" is that the placer never actually says "Long Trail" in the clues -- just LT. So it never came up on my search.

Going to start digging thru the 2008 thread now, too. Thanks, roo!

It's been awhile, but as I recall, the box is probably less than a mile off trail, but it will be downhill for you and then back uphill. the crash site is pretty near the top of the mountain. Also, there's a cool crash site on Mt Abraham you should check out as well. Lesser known, but more of a complete plane. After you summit, you'll start heading downhill and keep looking left for an unmarked trail. The plane is there, barely off the LT.
