You laugh, but when I was growing up in San Diego County, we thought anything north of LA was northern. No joke.

Well, yes, that's the mentality I was kind of making fun of. Geography lessons, anyone?

Geography lessons, anyone?

It wasn't geography, it was the amount of time. It was because everything was so close that we didn't need to go any further than LA. Back when I lived in Cali, everything was so close that I could do just about anything I wanted within 20 minutes of my home, and I didn't live in town... I lived up the mountain! Driving to LA (almost 2 hours) was an overnighter, for sure. It's not that I didn't make it farther north... my grandparents lived in Lompoc and we went there at least once a year, but that was a week-long trip. We also went all the way up to Crater Lake in Oregon when I was 11 or 12, but I remember being on that trip and thinking to myself that it took longer to get there than it did to get to Missouri. The problem was, that when you're a kid, you're thinking of how long it takes to get there, not how much you've seen. If I still lived in Cali, I doubt I'd still consider northern Cali to be anything beyond LA. I'd be more interested in seeing the state again. No, it had absolutely nothing to do with geography, it had to do with age.

These days, it's nothing for me to drive to Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, etc. on a day trip. These days I go down to Silver Dollar City (45 minutes to an hour) while daughter is in school and I'm back home before the bus gets back.

Only those from WAY south in the state would dare to call it "Cali".

Yeah, throw in a "San Fran" and they'll revoke her former citizenship completely!

Californian have their own dialects ,,, from amonds(central valley twang) to san rancisco( bay area twang). if you listen to the locals long enough, some never use the freeway numbers(its the nimitz not 880 or the harbor not the 110) ,there is only one Cal and eight other UC campuses, to never calling cities Dago and Frisco, its no different than listening to a bostonian say "paak the caah" I credit Herb Caen with creating humor around much of our local dialects,, we had a great letter box outing in sackatomatos yesterday, thanks herb

Alternatively in SoCal you would take the 5 to Sacramento, whereas in NoCal you take I-5, or simply, 5 to LA. The City means San Francisco; these being the only proper references to the city where the baseball Giants play. If you live north of Redding, you consider yourself to live in southern Oregon... except you still need to pay those pesky California taxes. Lastly those mountains on the eastern side of the state are the Sierra, without an "s" at the end. The word is already plural.

Oh, and Cali was a girl I went to high school with.

Not in San Diego they won't! As for the people in San Fran, they can't revoke me! Ha!

Distance from my old house to Tijuana: apx 50 miles

That one doesn't make me cringe nearly as much as the "F" word! (Fri$c@)

My "Zax and Friends" series we recently planted along I-5 (no "the" :-) pays tribute to some of those differences!

First of all, it was just 5 (no "the"). Second of all, I'd never take 5 to Sacramento... I would have taken a plane! :P

Ah yes, in Orange County we'd take "the" 405, but in San Mateo County we wouldn't take "the" 280.

Geography lessons, anyone?

It's all relative. I know folks in Humbolt County who scoff at the idea of the SF Bay Area being in "Northern California". They consider it "Central", while most in the Bay Area would consider "Central California" to be SLO area. If we want to look at the state vertically, then we've got the "Central Valley" that goes from, what? Redding to Bakersfield (ish)? It's all relative.

I think that's true of any state. Here in the Springfield area, we scoff at people in Lebanon saying they live in SW MO, but they say it nonetheless.

I think one of the most interesting bits of geography is California's Lost Coast. Its the coastal area of Humboldt County south of Ferndale (a really "big" city). There are no major roads in the area and only a few very small towns. Until about 10 years ago, I thought the Lost Coast was a mythical land created by a micro brewery.

Oh thank you thank you for posting this. "Sierra" already means mountains (plural), so you can pluralize Sierra when you're speaking of multiple "Sierras": the Sierra Nevada, the Sierra Madre, etc. The other one that drives me crazy is "Canadian Geese" for Canada Geese. Don't know why they're not Canadian, but they're not.

Well, I think the Central Valley is central between side borders--there are more dimensions than just North and South.

I did not know that. I've always called them Canadian Geese because I really never saw them till I moved here and that's what people call them here. Thanks for the education!

Or maybe I'm just being too picky:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_Goose

Branta canadensis: the "canadensis" means "from Canada" so maybe Canadian is not so incorrect after all. Looks like the ornithologists (the real experts) always use "Canada".

Perhaps... but people might look at you funny and try to protect the geese.

Fluffy Cow- who prefers not to dah the geese.

Maybe northern southern California. I lived in San Diego County for 19 years and have never once heard anyone say "can-yah-dah."

A nearby northern California Junior College, is Canada (pronounced Canyahdah) College, but it has the ~ over the n thereby making it Spanish, definitely not Canadian.

I was thinking the same thing about the town of La Canada Flintridge in Southern CA. Maybe it's that area where the pronunciation occurs?

Well that's a whole different ball of wax. La Cañada is totally different than saying "Canada" with that pronunciation. Cañada means canyon, if I recall correctly. I still wouldn't call the country of Canada "canyahdah." Do they do that in La Cañada Flintridge? That's as weird as some of the town names we have in Missouri... Nevada (pronounced Nevaydah), Lebanon (Lebahnun), Versailles (Versales), Laquey (Lakeway), and Bois D'Arc (you're gonna love this one... Bo Dark).

I just looked it up in my trusty Spanish/English dictionary and canyon is cañon with ' over the o. I could not find cañada.

Google translated cañada as glen or ravine, so similar to anyon but a little different, too.
And how are you guys accessing that enyay (that's what the n with the tilde is called but
probably not even close to how it's spelled; it's actually a separate letter in the Spanish alphabet).
I haven't been able to create special characters on my PC.

Dizzy, those place name pronunciations are hilarious...the one that comes closest to pronunciation
from its country of origin is Bo Dark (Bois D'Arc)--should be bwah dark. Means arch of wood?
We have street names named after obliterated Indian tribes, with Nez Perce Street nearby.
In Wyoming (where there's a mountain of that name in the Tetons--another pet peeve! It's Grand
Teton Nat'l Park or "the Tetons", not "the Grand Tetons"--there's only one Grand) they say "nay
persay", here we have to say "nez pierce" or be an outcast.

Hold down the ALT key while typing 164 on your numpad. Won't work on Macs and won't work on laptops that don't have a numpad. Alternatively, you can go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map then find the appropriate symbol, click Select, Copy, then paste it into your message. Easier to just type ALT 164 if you remember the Alt code.
