Would you use the money icon if there is a fee for parking (some validation available) on weekdays but not weekends/most holidays, or would you skip the icon and just mention it in the clue? I plan to mention it in the clue either way. Do many of you automatically skip clues that have the money icon, without even reading the clue? (And then I guess the follow up question is... if some/many do, do I care? :-)

Hey Now, Monkeys!

I would PREfer that you put the $ icon up with the other attributes for the 'box. I might miss a text-only blurb that "sometimes there's a fee, sometimes there isn't." When I 'm in a hurry, I often print clues for areas I will be in without much more than a cursory glance at the clues. I can think of several times that $ icon would have saved me a trip for which I was unprepared or willing to fork over $$ to 'box.

YMMV and invariably will,

When I first read this, it looked like Monkey Icon. Cool, a monkey icon!

See, I feel exactly the opposite. When I'm unprepared to fork over $$ to box, I'll skip all the listings with a $ icon -- which means I may have missed the fact that this box is free on some days. IMHO, if the box can reasonably be expected to be found without paying anything, the icon should not be used. If you might have to pay if you show up at the wrong time, that should be mentioned at the TOP of the clues, perhaps highlighted.

Callaway Gardens has to be the biggest question mark in this issue, since it's rather expensive most of the time, $13/person I think, but is free in January and February. If you're showing up in August, you're gonna hafta pay, showing up after some time in the afternoon or on a particular day of the week won't help. Apply the icon? I dunno.

I'm siding with Kirbert on this. If you can get in free, then the money icon is unnecessary. State at the top in bold that you might have to pay and either provide a link to when/how you pay or spell it out clearly in the clues. People don't always read the clues before they set out, but I'm guessing they at least skim the bold stuff at the top for just such a reason. A money icon would not deter me but I do know it deters some people. And, like Kirbert said, you might lose some people that see the icon and immediately discard it.
