Getting Kids Involved
Board: Postcrossing, not Cross-posting!

So, do you all get kids involved with postcrossing? My DS, aged 10, would love to get mail. But, I would be the one making sure we are taking care of our responsibilities.

I have a jumble of an old postcard (PC) collection that I used to have in a poster frame. One of my favorites include a PC of showing drawings of winter and summer in Britain (cloudy and rainy). I sent that one to my now DH when I spent abroad in England.

- Sunny (not cloudy and rainy) in Wisconsin (at the start of THE blizzard)

I don't have kids myself, but I've received a number of cards from kids. I think it's great when they write the message themselves, even if they are too young to be able to write a lot. :)

My 13 year old is on postcrossing - in fact, that's how I got involved. I was always on her to send more cards so she could get more, and so I signed up for my own account.

It's hit or miss as far as her involvement. She's been a member for 3 years, but will go through months where she doesn't want to write any postcards, so she doesn't. When she was 10 and 11, we printed out a small paragraph about her and attached it to the postcard which she then signed. Easier than trying to make sure they write clearly. Now, she writes her own.

I think the main thing with kids is not "making" them do anything. If they are excited and want to send cards, then great! If they don't, then that's fine too. And now, my daughter will get jealous of my cards on occasion, which makes her want to send some more out.

Have fun!

My kids weren't involved with writing the cards or sending them, but whenever I got one we would talk about where they came from.
We had a poster maker machine at the school I worked in. So I took a black and white world map and printed it poster size. I hung it in our office/homework room. Whenever I got a postcard we would find the country on the map and color it (if it was a country I hadn't received one from yet). We talked about how far away the country was, what continent it was on, what the postal abbreviation was, etc... We kept a tally for how many postcards we had from each country.
On my profile I asked the senders to write something in their language (with translation) on the postcard and to try to send a card that had a picture of some historical building or significant place specific to that country/city (Great Wall of China for example). So my kids and I would talk about the language and the similarities and differences to English. Or what the buildings, landscapes, people and/or animals looked like.
They were younger then (early elementary) and really enjoyed it. I got busy and haven't done it for awhile, but since there has been so much talk about it lately, I'm thinking about starting again.
