Longer Hike?

So I recently discovered a trail That is probably 5 or 6 miles long right here in orchard park It would be through woods and up and down hills and ravines. I was wondering if there was interest in the area for me to plant a series along the whole trail. It would entail alot of boxes ( I am thinking possibly 24)(I have a big plan) and would surely take a quite a few hours to hike and would be pretty exhausting with a bunch of elevation changes. Would any of you hike it? Most boxes in this are seem like much shorter hikes than this would be. This would definitly take a long time for me to set up but I really want to. I just want to know if any one will actually go after it. I would hate to "waste " that much time and effort on something that may never get found.

Depends on how many finders you will be happy with.... I like longer hikes at times, although unless the stamps are exceptional I would prefer finding assorted carvers along one big trail. That being said, today I did a 12 box series ( by one very talented carver) and I was thrilled with every one.

I have some at the top of small mountains and some at the end of long hikes..and they got only a couple of visitors. Which is fine with me. Their kind compliments were incentive enough to plant such boxes.

I have long lamented the lack of long-hike letterboxes in this area. While my idea of a long hike is rather longer than 5 or 6 miles, I would certainly be inclined to attempt your series. That is, I would attempt part of it. I can't imagine going after all 24. I have a bit of a less is more mentality toward letterboxing. One box at the end of a long hike would be more rewarding to me than a series. Of course, don't let that discourage you from your idea.

It wasn't long ago that finding every box in the Buffalo area was a reasonable goal for me. Now, it's not even a consideration.

Ok let me explain the 24 boxes thing. I have a plan I have been brewing for quite some time and I think this could be the trail to do it on. I plan on taking let's say something aroung a 4x5 sheet of PZ kut. then I will carve out a clue to a mystery box. maybe some words maybe some pictures but the point would be the clue strecthing that whole area of PZ kut. then I would divide it up into 24 (or 12) pieces. I would leave instructions to stamp the stamps in order into that rectangle shape to puzzle the final clue together to attain the mystery box. I know I would need to be extra careful with hiding these boxes so that none hopefully go missing to spoil the puzzle. SO does this make sense? does it sound interesting?

As I'm sure you probably already know, Papa Phoenix would be all over that... I'll have to show this thread to him and let him respond for himself tomorrow morning. But, I can almost guarantee he'd try to be FF on that series too!

Hey! No socializing at my gathering! LOL Don't forget your boxes, folks! There's an HH hostel waiting for some new blood!

Oh, and as for the 24 box series, I like the idea...I'm more likely to do a long series if I know there'll be gratification in parts. I can't do long hikes for only one box. My mind and body go on strike. The Highlander was a postal worker for a while, so he can walk a much farther distance, but he has to have frequent sanity breaks, or he starts threatening wildlife with AK-47s and such...kind of embarrassing!

No BLEEDING in my house, either! LOL

You KNOW I'm kidding, right? Bring all the talk and new ideas you want...wouldn't be a real WNY meet without the easy banter of friends.

Which reminds me...we GOTTA get Team Dakota out here! I wonder if they know what's up?

yes yes please. we like long hikes.
the very first lbing i did was a slight hike with two non-lbers who love hiking, tehy throughly enjoyed it and would love to do it again. fl and myself also just went out to get cq's ctrl-alt-dlt boxes, quite a hike, we got lost on our way out (which made it more so- but we saw deer!)
in the end we loved it and were only complaining about how one of the boxes we had to take home because it was so wet (now in cq's possession)

so yes-please plant

phoenix-we'll give you a run for your money to be the first finders :)

I like the idea of a longer hike with a number of boxes along it. But personally, and this is just me, 24 boxes seems like an awful lot. I mean, if you imagine spending 10 minutes for each box in finding the box, stamping in, reading the logbook and re-hiding it well, that's already 4 hours and that's without any hiking! I think you could cut the number of boxes in half and still have an awesome series that people would definitely come out for.

Hey! There was a time I could boast I *had* every letterbox between Rochester NY and Erie PA... both of them!

This past summer I posted a 10-box series along the Chautauqua Rails to Trails. It takes me 3 hours just to do a maintenance check and I know where the boxes are and which parking spaces are closest. Someone hunting the boxes has to devote all day to finding the complete run. Keep that in mind. You'll get fewer boxers, but more dedicated ones (me for example!)

By the way, if anyone wants to tackle my series while he's planting his, it's here.

No one has yet earned the First Finder's Certificate by finding all of the boxes.
In fact, two of them are still virgin!

I know I know. When I think of back in the day when I looked and there were only 3 boxes in all of upstate NY so I figured this hobby "wasn't worth it." LOL Back then, I had no inkling that I could change my own destiny by planting my own and more would follow!

I made an attempt at that one. Never did solve it.
But this means, they're looking for someone to *plant* a box for them, right? :D :D :D
