The house behind my neighbors house has about 3 or 4 dogs, one being some kind of hound that howls and the others are big, a lab and a beagle and a mutt. they barked constantly until my neighbor bought one of those air horn things like you use at sports events. Every time the dogs barked, he blew that thing and after about a week, the dogs stopped barking. It was annoying to us, but it didn't take long. All they dogs stopped barking. My mom sprays her neighbors dogs with the water hose when they aren't home and it's warm enough. But after a few months of it being too cold to spray the dogs they started back barking. They're little yippy dogs like a pomaranian and a chihuahua, so they are gonna bark. but try the air horn. He bought his at Walmart for about $6.

How about a solid fence, where at least they can't see you as well? Almost makes you wish for a sound barrier of some sort. Air horn sounds like it might work, though. Sure would make those folks wake up and take notice, and all the other neighbors to boot. ha

At my house all you have to do is unlock the back door and they hear the click of the lock and they go nuts and we do have a privacy fence.

I feel you pain. I have been in this situation more than once.... why is it that people who own dogs simply cannot hear them bark?!? My neighbors currently have somewhere around 11 dogs. in the city. where it is illegal to own more than 3. Unfortunately this is a law that the police choose not to enforce.

I would say that if they have bark collars on, absolutely do not spray them with water. I do like the air horn idea some one mentioned but would be afraid that it might just make them bark more. I too am definitely interested in a solution here because I really don't have any answers either. I am thinking that if the owners can't/won't do anything then you are unfortunately out of luck, which is where I am too.

Cheers!

What about code enforcement?

I would continue to call the police, I can't imagine that continous barking like that doesn't break any of the city/county codes. Why can't they keep them inside???? There is a male cat that lives a few houses away that loves to hang out at our house. We already have 2 male cats, the last thing I need is a third spraying all over! He also eats our cats food, like he is never fed. Anyway, before I knew who he belonged to, I took him to the animal shelter, he was micro-chipped, so they called the owners and told them they HAD to keep him inside, if they were going to continue ownership. I know it's a little different situation, but a RESPONSIBLE dog owner would keep him inside if he is annoying all the neighbors.

Thanks to every one who replied. I'll definitely try the air horn. If nothing else, it will afford the other neighbor's some amusement (they've all given up and decided they just have to live with the constant barking). And my male dog loves all things loud and obnoxious, so this will be great in his mind (yes, he's a freak; he tries to lay under the table saw when I'm cutting things).

Larry - I would try to the recording but the last time I talked with the neighbor, the dogs had been barking for 30 minutes at me and the owners were home the entire time. It makes no difference if the owners are home or not.

Snail Mail - you used the key word, "responsible." These neighbor are by no means responsible dog owners. They refuse to lock the dog door (and keep the barking inside) because "the dogs trash the house if they're locked inside." I have seen one of the three dogs - the border collie mix - walked *twice* in the 1.5 years I have lived here. Boredom is probably the main problem with these dogs.

I'll keep trying the police, too. Maybe if enough neighbors complain often enough something will happen.

In my experience this is key too... if it is only one person complaining that one person is just too sensitive, if all the neighbors complain then there must be a problem. I had a hard time getting the other neighbors to do more than grumble amongst themselves so I was the only "sensitive" one who was willing to complain.

Cheers!

I live in a postage stamp lot neighborhood built in the 60's. Everyone around us has dogs. Bark, Bark, Bark, Bark, Bark, Bark, Bark, Bark, Bark- so no one (besides us!) will complain because they all have dogs and do not want a backlash. One neighbor has the air horn- and it does not work that great- but I might try getting one to reinforce the training while they are working. Although I love dogs, I do know that they are barking due to boredom or they are just barky breeds! We have a neighbor who leaves out in a fenced (4 foot) yard her two huskies. They bite, other dogs that got too close to their fence (ripped the ear off one while their owner was right there and killed a yorkie that ran near the fence) and a child stupid enough to chase his toy into their yard... they do not bark but they howl a whiney ear piercing sound that I would like to see go away (both the dogs and the noise!)
So I feel for you... let us all know what you find that works- I would love to know-
thanks

Dogs WILL bark because that is what they do. They bark if they are lonely, bored, threatened or playing. The only kind of barking a responsible owner should tolerate is play barking or a warning bark. It will be a long road to train someone else's dog to stop barking; it can be done but you have to be very diligent in your "aversion techniques." At least someone is willing to take on the training of the poor things! Terrio--living in the country listening to neighbors' dogs barking
