Less material=less cost to produce?

That's probably one part of the equation, but also smaller=cheaper to ship halfway around the world.

I'm kinda thinking that this is the "Dollar Store" - everything is a dollar. I bet both sizes are still being produced, but the smaller one is cheaper for the Dollar Store to buy, so they get a better profit on it (since their sales price is "fixed" at a dollar). Makes more sense for them to sell the slightly smaller one.

How are these boxes to use in comparison to Lock & Locks or Snapware?

I should just refer you to many discussions in the past, but I'm too lazy to look them up myself!

Compared to Lock & Locks, the SureFresh containers are not as sturdy -- the plastic isn't as thick. However, they're a lot cheaper, $1 each. They also cannot be closed with the lid on upside-down, perhaps the biggest shortcoming of a Lock & Lock (I've found a couple of them closed incorrectly myself).

Compared to Snapware, they're pretty similar, except again they're a lot cheaper. There are reports that the flaps break off of Snapware containers, and so far the SureFresh containers don't seem to have that problem.

Quality control is an issue with the SureFresh containers, though. Don't just grab a bunch of them, check each one and make sure all four flaps snap down like they should and when you give the container a squeeze it seems airtight.

I have several SureFresh containers in the field, and so far only one has had a problem -- it got chopped up by a machete! Other than that, they seem to be working well for me.

Although the material is not quite as sturdy/thick as a true Ln'L, it is still far superior to the disposable containers I often come across. I've used them without issues through Michigan winters. I like the smaller size, just wish my Dollar Tree had them in stock more consistently. As Kirbert pointed out, with all of the off-brand locking containers, you need to test the flaps before buying them as this seems to be the point of failure in most cases.

I also ran into a batch of the round ones that had a lid gasket breakage problem. I ended up taking the batch of 10 I purchased, removing the gaskets and giving them a light expansion to see if they would pull apart. In addition to the one that had fallen out in the sack, and was not in a circle but had come apart, I found one more that parted with only slight pressure. I returned them to the dollar tree and they exchanged them with no problem. If the gasket is not continuous in the lid, the lid will leak for sure and will probably fall out when opened....or be more prone to.

Ah, this is good to know... I will be sure to check the gasket also!

I haven't had this problem -- but then again, I don't buy the round ones. I have had a similar gasket issue with one other type container, though. Believe it or not, I found it a simple matter to glue the ends of the gasket back together. Worked fine. Of course, returning them to the store would probably be a better idea (lets the retailer and the manufacturer know that there are issues with quality control) but sometimes that's not convenient.
