I just discovered this site:
http://www.carvingpumpkins.com/

They recommend using Speedball, among other things. I am using my Staedtler tools to shave the gray areas and the carving saw from a Pumpkin Masters set. They have some pretty good directions there. I've been following them.

Wow! Those are fantastic!

I tried the sculpting kit last year by Pumpkin Masters, and I love it!!! I always cut through stuff when I carved, so this is much easier for me!

Thanks!

I got my stencils at http://www.zombiepumpkins.com

You have to pay to become a member to download the stencils, but it's a "pay what you think is fair" kind of thing to help with hosting costs. I figure it's worth it since I like to shrink down the stencils and use them for stamp carving. Or stenciling bags (my Frank the Bunny bag is the gallery under the non-pumpkin uses).

I also tried out one of the pumpkin carving kits this year instead of using my kitchen knives. Wow...why didn't I get these earlier? I was amused that there was a Speedball type gouge in the kit. I was tempted to break out my stamp carving tools.

I used some stencils from Zombie Pumpkins last year. They do a really nice job.

I use the Pumpkin Masters sets also, though the thin saw drives me nuts. I break at least 2 a year. I wouldn't mind paying more and having it last.

The shaving technique actually uses stamp carving tools. They work surprisingly well, only the pumpkin is a bit more slippery than a stamp.

I added two more that I carved today to the gallery. I am working on another one that I should finish tonight.

I finally added the last of the pumpkins I carved for Halloween into the gallery.

They got to spend the week in the extra bathtub so that they would have some life to them for the visitors this weekend. I'm glad there wasn't a fire or something where we would have to explain what that was all about.

Here's the gallery:
