I use a back pack for my extras ie: water, ziplocks, papertowels, poncho, flashlight, compass.
For my log book and inks and stamp I have a bible cover. It has a zipper pouch on the outside and 4 on the inside +2 elastic straps that perfectly fit my stamp and 1 ink

I posted this question a few days ago myself and got so many good ideas. I sort of combined all of the suggestions and went looking through my closet for anything that I might find that would work. I found a bag that I bought from LL Bean a few years ago that I used for traveling. It has several different compartments, and even one for carrying a water bottle. Look on their website and you can find several different kinds. Organization is not my strong suit and I have to work at it continually. For now this bag is working, but ask me in about a month how organized I am :(

Great ideas, thanks everyone.
I think I'll get one of those clear umbrellas, we are typically in the woods and when raining it can be dark so a clear umbrella will let some much needed light in.
I must go find one of those multi pocketed bags now too. I had no idea letterboxing required so much stuff!

actually, all it requires is possession of the clues, a stamp, a logbook, and ink. stuff you can carry in a pocket or fanny pack. you will find, though, that there are a host of other things that can make letterboxing more comfy.

kind of like camping. a pot, a good knife, something to make fire with, and a blanket are enough for some people, and they forage for their food. others go camping with only what they can carry with them, but they take a nice sleeping bad, a stove, mess kit, food, and a tarp for shelter. others (me) need a tent and a cot to go camping, and are limited to places they can go in their car, since they can't carry all of it. still others go in an rv or camper, and still call it camping, and think that they only bring "essential equipment".

stamp, logbook, ink, clue. occasionally compass. that is all that is strictly necessary for camping.. the rest is for comfort, for being helpful with box maintenance, first aid stuff for people maintenance, and the list grows as you think of things you needed last trip and wouldn't want to be caught without again...

I just got mine from amazon thanks to everyones suggestions. Love it, though I am going to spray it with waterproof spray and see how that goes. It's that time of year in the PNW! Still looking for clear umbrella...

I have a small Adias backpack from the women's sports section of the local Fred Meyer. It has curved straps that are very comfy, and divided pockets w/i the main two pouches. The outside is covered with junior ranger badges and patches, so I look like I would be the sort of person to be "sketching nature" while sitting on rocks with it at my feet.

As an added bonus: it is not pink tartan like the last minibackpack, hubby will carry it.
